Just listened to Malthouse on SEN

A few points he made on Freo

1 Ross is a very good coach and did an exceptional job to get Freo to the topof the ladder with it's list of players last season.

2 No surprise Freo have dropped off with injuries and great players being over 30 and almost past it.

3 Freo need a rebuild and it will test Ross however he has the ability to do it.

4 Forward line deficiencies last finals cost Freo with Mayne being the main target and he is really a 3rd tall. Walters is an exeptional player but can't win it iff his own boot.

5 The rebuild will take time but is achievable under Ross

Collingwood under Malthouse is the club we most likely want to emulate.

- Malthouse takes over a club with one genuine superstar but otherwise in disarray
- The side quickly improves to make a grand final, come breathtakingly close to winning a premiership against a juggernaught
- Crashes and burns once it's realised the underlying talent is woefully poor.

That's where the similarities end, we're at the same point Collingwood were in 2004. We want to repeat the following:

- Make the most of the time at the bottom to unearth some genuine high quality players
- Quickly improve again up the ladder to make finals (Collingwood nearly made the GF in 2007 after finishing second last in 2005)
- Improvements in the game plan and refinements to the list turns Collingwood into a fearsome unit that wins a premiership in 2010 (and dominates the comp in 2011 but fails to get over another juggernaught).

The turnaround time from collapse to premiership is six years. It can be done, Lyon has the time to prove he can do it. If he has made top four again by 2020 and kept us there he will deserve an extension. Unlikely we can win a premiership in a shorter timeframe. It will mean accepting two-three lean years in the meantime.

You could have asked anyone on Bigfooty and they would have told you that. Nothing ground breaking there, but thanks for the link.

Maybe the Freo BF board but the wider BF community it is just that Ross Lyon is a crap coach and has totally wrecked our list. Someone on the MB even said how good a coach Harvey was and should have been given a chance.....I think Pav well and truly shot that one down.

In hindsight that article wasn't as scathing as I remember. It just came out around the same time as that laughable one written by Craig Hutchinson

'The Shopper Dockers'.

Welcome back :)

No omg, wow, never thought of that moment.

But given that AFL reporting is light froth and opinion for entertainment sake, and with 18 teams, most punters aren't going to know the detail of many other teams... This is exceptional in that anyone has some simple factual analysis.
