You are aware how many players with under 50 games experience we play most weeks including against you last week? We have been rebuilding for years most of the older guys are gone. As for Murphy he's a class player so if he's not asking for huge wages I wouldn't say no but I would have thought a ruck and a key forward are bigger priorities for us.
I'm not sure he does. It continues to be a narrative on here for the people that don't put much thought into their posting. At one stage this year we had 13 players in the side who had played under 50 games.

He should stick with the Blues and stay a one club player.

Do you play footy to be a one club player or to be successful?

Probably has two years left to snag a premiership which he won’t do at Carlton. If we can get pick 19 I’d say he’ll be nudged out.

Personally I’d like to keep him but he won’t be in our next flag.

Some people do.

Unless the AFL does a dodgy Murphy wont get band 2 compo. He's 31 and will likely only get a 2 year deal on say $500 base salary plus incentives. Those incentives could net him another $200k a year but compo is only uses the base salary.

More likely the AFL will say band 3 which is still generous and that would mean a 2nd rounder straight after the Blues 2nd which wouldnt be far from band 2 compo anyway. Say pick 23ish rather than pick 19. Still very generous for a 31 year old.

I find it difficult to see how he could attract a compo pick at 31 years of age even if he was offered a 2x500k deal
Jarrad waite would be the best example with waite also being 31 years old and from what i remember was on something like 400k (could be wrong) but the salary cap has gone up 20% so it would be even harder to justify

Why wouldn’t he suit and be a good contributor to Hawks?

Can't see us getting rid of Lewis only to pick up Murphy 2 years later.

Sloane is the upper limits, & he turns 29 early in 2019.

Best to keep Murphy as you'll be lucky to garner an early second rounder for him....Unless he's looking for his retirement fund & Gold Coast throw an insane amount at him & an early second, of course.

Will be 31 in July.....Why would anyone bother?

Id say depending on dollars that the experienced players at both Haw and geelong over the last few year show that 30 doesn't have to mean the end. The arrival of FA now means it will become more common that a player moves for a year or three ... the question for me is less age and more if he is up to playing good footy week in week out. Some players can be cooked before 30 , some last to mid 30's ... but most agree injuries etc are harder to get over as you get older...

We just jettisoned all of Hodge, Mitchell & Lewis for next to nix, in order to start a clean midfield slate.....To suggest we'd be interested in Murphy flies directly in the face of that policy.

It may well but we took Ablett in after we did the same thing to SJ, and Chapman and Bartel etc.. Teams do funny things Mitchell was 2 or 3 older again wasnt he?

I want to keep him but if he wants to leave then Blues should respect that decision. His done enough and should go and have a crack at a premiership elsewhere.

Not exactly. Alot had to do with Hodgey, Lewy & Mitch's future lives...

You think 3 years? Have hardly seen him in the previous two years

Dude, he won the BnF last year.

He played 22 games, averaged 16.4 kicks, 13.4 handballs, (Avg 29.8 disposals) going at a shade over 10 contested and 19 uncontested over those 22 games.

He finished with 9 Brownlow votes in a side that won like 5 games for the year.

I get that he has potentially chronic injury problems now with his foot/ ankle, and there is a bit of a risk here, but come on.

If he were to leave which I think he won't we would be lucky to get band 2 given his age.

Band three, which is basically the same thing if we finish last.

Band 2 is a pick at the end of the 1st round (pick 19). Band 3 is a pick after our second round pick (pick 20 if we finish last).

And yes, I know we traded our 2nd rounder last year, but that doesnt matter. Its based of the pick, not who currently holds it.

Just what dollars do you think he will be getting? Band3.. dont think so ... unless the comp falls into aflmotlop range I guess its possible but Motlop was 26 and on 500 plus

On form alone, well over 500k. Bearing in mind he looks to have a chronic reoccurring ankle injury, your guess is as good as mine.

But if the AFL are just going to let club captains walk out of clubs on the bottom of the ladder as free agents to clubs at the top of the ladder, with no compo for the bottom sides, we might as well hand back the keys now.

Marc is no fool. He knows this injury is going to severely affect his next contract (probably his penultimate or even final contract). He's (wisely) testing the waters for market value at present.

I dont blame him. I'd do the same thing.

I cant see him leaving Carlton unless its for a significantly better deal than what we are offering. Money wont be the issue with our offer (we have tons of cash, and can pay overs). I personally think the sticking point would be length of contract. Our policy is to only give 1 year deals for players over 30 (Simpson has been on rolling one year deals for a while now). Marc might be keener on a 2 year deal in case the ankle/ foot goes pear shaped next year and forces him out.

2 years at 400-450 becomes better than one year at 550-600 in that case. He might prefer the security of a longer deal.

It has zero to with being Capt. Its age... and money. If he want 500 then he can catch the next bus as far as Geelong is concerned.. I doubt we would have that.. to pay to him. He may well get more by staying at Carlton ..I have not heard anyone say..he will be moving for money... so if he does move I doubt the comp will be much. Dodgy ankle , mature player etc ..sounds like SJ when he went to GWS.
