I don't agree that what was said was correct however this isn't the first time this has happened and Murphy is the first one to have such a sook about it.

Sam Fisher copped it from Buddy according to posts above but nobody cares and the media don't run with it because it's Buddy and he can do no wrong. Put a Saints player in the wrong and holy crap get the papers printing!

Pissant story from the continually shit Melbourne media.

I wonder how many drug cheat and cokehead calls Carlisle has copped this season and will cop against Essendon. Such a tuned media machine that will never let the big clubs look bad (good bloke Hodgey drinks and drives and attempts to crush peoples heads into goalposts but he's such a good bloke it's fine)

Said Marsh to Botham, in 1982 . . . racism was also fairly common back then. Doesn't make it ok now.
The point being that having a crack at family, your wife etc. is and still does happen. Majority of it just crass filth where players give as good as they get and move on.

Botham was clever and witty enough to have a crack back and all is fine.

I am unaware of anybody who actually knows what was actually said, but everybody knows it crossed the line?

Are people actually saying that any sledging about family is over-stepping a line!?

alright tough guy ;). I just don't advocate for soft ***** like you attacking people, while they are laying on the ground. If you are going to do it, atleast have the intestinal fortitude to do it while he is standing up. kicking someone when they are laying on the ground, it the epitome of a cowardice and you advocate it...

Walking past someone to inform them that karma is a bitch does not equate to kicking someone when they are down.

Fear not though, the karma bus will roll on to your doorstep soon enough.

Was there truth to these sledges and we're they aimed at the player or the partner? It's a fine distinction. Did Buddy go out with Fisher's girlfriend previously? Did he call her any names? We'd have to know the detail to know if there is a difference.

However I still think these things should be left off the field altogether.

It doesn't help to suggest that because one was allowed to pass, all should be allowed to pass. Education is more and more prevalent.

I think if it was something you couldn't say at the pub or on the street then don't bother. I'm not sure why being on a footy field makes it different, just to get a perceived edge. If anything it made Murphy play better but that's not the point.

I like to think we've moved on from those types of sledges, just as we have racism, mental illness etc. Call him soft or whatever but family should be off limits.

Also FWIW Murphy's wife wasn't there to defend herself against the sledges, similar to how big Carlisle was "defenceless" on the ground.

Well done to Murphy, I say. It's the duty of every red-blooded masculine man to come out and condemn players on opposing teams saying gossipy nasty things about people they barely or have never met. This sort of thing never happens on the internet or on those social media websites so it shouldn't happen on the footy field.

I'm old enough to remember all the multitudes of VFL players from the 70s who went to the media and implored opposition players to stop making comments about their wives.

Whatever the sledge was there must have been a stinging truth to it for Murphy to have reacted that much.

You kidding me?
So something has to be true for someone to take massive offence to it?
If someone said that about my daughter to my face, they'd wake up in casualty, no if's, buts or maybe's.

There's a difference between sledging that is funny and witty and stuff that just crosses the line. The great sledgers have always been done by blokes who never make the headlines for crossing the line.
The overwhelming majority of sledging is just purile, crass stuff said to try and put somebody off their game. That is the entire point...what is said on the field would not be acceptable off the field the majority of the time.

Like most things these days, EVERYTHING is off limits if someone takes offence.

Or he just had enough of a false rumour being spread.
Would make him look very insecure.

Personally if he was cheated on being sledged about it crosses a line IMO.

However if he is weak enough to stay with the person who cheated on him(assuming no kids with that person) sledging him about that rather that the cheating itself is fair game.

If his partner had bedded multiple AFL players before him he should know what sledges would come his way and sledges related to it should not have that much of an impact.

I thought that too but maybe he just had a gutfull of it all given how long the rumor has been around. Not sure.

IF

Your captain is sledged from pillar to post by that villainous cad Jake Carlisle

THEN

Stand up a bit taller for him in the final quarter. Squibbing vital contests that cost you the game is not what the doctor ordered.

"villianous cad Jake Carlisle".

Cue Jake Carlisle in a top hat and twirly moustache, rubbing his gloved hands and letting out an evil laugh, while he has Murphy's wife tied to train tracks.

Crikey look at all the st Kilda supporters saying fair game to crack into someone about their choice of partner.

Perhaps one shouldn't be surprised when they support guys like Milne and Montagna.
.

Don't forget they recruited Andrew Lovett for the hat-trick, probably went after Heuskes and the other Burgoyne too

Why should it be acceptable in any context?

Shaming women isn't OK - at all.

My initial reaction, as was for most St. Kilda supporters was that Murphy is a weak dog for waiting until Carlisle was down injured to fire back. I still don't think it's a good look at all. However having thought about it, who really gives a ****. Whole thing has been blown way out of proportion. All started when Murphy sledged Carlisle about taking cocaine and he fired back. After the melee Saints players saw how agitated he was and then targeted him to throw him off his game. Well done Saints, I support that. If it had been the other way around I would to. Stand up for your teammates in all situations and if an opportunity presents itself to throw the opposition teams best player/captain off his game then by all means go for it, as unsavoury as it was.

Had a good laugh at some of the Carlton supporters though and how triggered they all are. Saying that St. Kilda posters on here have 'shown their true colours' was a personal favourite. Some of the stuff I've read from their posters is disgusting so the same could be said to them, although I guess that was already pretty well known.

Looking forward to a Paul Roos led media flogging this all week until the AFL has to step in and hand down punishments and make the game look softer than it already is.

But Paul Roos wouldn't know about it, since he is over in Hawaii with his family....oh wait!

And still it mostly relates to the person, not their sister, wive, mother or other innocent party that cannot defend themselves.

Back in the 80s you could belt a bloke off the ball as a comeback. You can't do that these days so it is what it is and if blokes can't go around making low comments about wives and girlfriends that really doesn't bother me a bit.
