Mentioned this in another thread, but I really like the idea (bit obsessed with it tbh), so even though I know its wildly improbable, interested in others views on whether its actually a good idea or not.

Marc Murphy rhasn't re-signed with Carlton yet. You'd think there's no way he's leaving, but the fact he hasn't come to terms yet suggests there may be a crack there.

I think if we want to try something really dramatic, we should offer him 100K extra over whatever Carlton is (we must have more room than them in the cap by the time they pay Judd, Fev, etc) and an extra year on the deal, and try and steal him from them. Very unlikely to come off, but well worth the try I'd have thought. He's out of contract, so if he decides to go, they'll have to accept under market price for him. Pick 11 + Medders for Murphy? Sounds steep, but imagine our midfield next year if we get Cousins and Murphy and our youngsters come on. With Didak staying, Medders would still be missed, but with Reid, Rusling and Dawes coming through, we'd cope. Medders would be just what Carlton need to help out Fev, but he's peak is right now - Murphy still has years of improvement ahead.

I think maybe i just like the idea of getting him from them for less than they'd want - a la what happened with Judd and WCE.

Pick 11 + Medhurst does not sound steep for Murphy. It sounds well under the price they would be asking, and rightfully so.
He is in his early 20's, number 1 draft pick who is already dominant in the midfield is going to take a lot to get, and there is absolutely no chance it will ever happen.
I can't see him dogging Carlton, a club where he has an assured future (whether he gets a contract for 2 years or 4 years, it is regardless, he will continue to get extensions on his contract there til he is in his 30's) just so he can pull an extra 100k a year.

Dreaming really... IF a trade was ever to even get close to coming through, we would definitely have to use Didak in the trade.

Also the comparison to getting him for less than they'd want is ridiculous. Judd wanted to come home to Melbourne from Western Australia.
I am sure Murphy has no overwhelming, longing desire or need to move just 30 minutes down the road...

Yeah, and he has re-signed anyways :)

Next... Now Jamison, there is someone we should be targetting.

Can't blame me for dreaming about screwing Carlton somehow. ;) It's been too long since we sold Mick McGuane to them for a massive deal. It was worth the pain of seeing him in that blue jumper for the whole two games he played for them.

I don't care about Murphy, it's pie in thesky stuff.. but what i want to know is why do our fans keep chucking Medhurst into trade scenarios. The bloke has switched clubs, worked his butt off and turned around his career to the point where he is AA.
Unless he says he wants to go home he should be untouchable. He should finish top three in the copeland

I have a feeling he was a massive pies supporter as a youngster. That would have counted for something but as someone else already mentioned, pretty sure he has already re-signed.

What?? He skirts the packs!! Good player - yes. May become dominant - no where near dominant yet

I think neither club would want to do this trade

Tut Tut Tut

Marc Murphy is an absolute gun.... and guess what!! I am not a Carlton supporter in disguise... lol :p

OK just to make sure you know, Murphy has not re-signed because he is waiting until after trade week because he is willing to take a pay cut if it helps us land a big fish. Thats how much he loves Carlton. They have agreed to terms but he offerd to wait so it could help us land a good player, and at this stage it looks like ti could be okeefe.

Steep?! Jesus!

You want to trade away our All-Australian forward pocket (and leading goalscorer) who loves the club to the scum? I would vomit if Medders had to put on that Blue jumper we all hate so much.

Marc Murphy is a good youngster that's for sure; but his disposal is questionable at this stage in his career. I'd rather we persist with Daisy and Marty Clarke in the midfield rather than sell our soul to the devil.

I would love a player like Marc Murphy at the Pies..... I would like Daniel Kerr more though!

However, if Carlton land Kerr or O'Keefe, serious questions have to be asked.... how come they can land players but we can't. If this happens, the AGM meeting will go of the chain?

My question to pie fans is surely we have heaps of space in the salary cap. Who are we paying? In my opinion, Didak is our best player, but he cant be on more than $450,000. I know Cloke, Thomas, Pendlebury and H Shaw will command more cash in the future, but at the moment..... where is our money going?

In America, all player salaries (NFL, NBA and MLB) are released for public viewing, this is something I believe the AFL must adopt. Its funny how Melbourne, the worst side in the competition can't afford Warnock but Carlton can?

As if a player will take a pay cut, he will get under the table money from Pratt, just as Judd is getting!!!!

Yep has been mentioned before Murphy has agreed terms with the Blues. Just waiting till the dust settles on trade week to sign the dotted line.

Nah, look I love Medders and would hate to trade him. But the consensus is we're at least one gun midfielder short of being a real threat, and in Medhurst, Didak, Thomas, Reid, Rusling, Anthony and Dawes, on top of Cloke and maybe Rocca, we have more forwards than we can really use. You aren't going to get a top-drawer midfielder unless you're prepared to trade something significant - and the brutal reality is that of that list, Medhurst is the most tradeable commodity in terms of ratio of current value to future upside. He realistically maybe has two more years at his current level, and maybe two more after that as a good player. All the others are to reach anywhere near their peak. He'll never bring us more than he will right now, and we can better cover his loss than just about any other of our top five or six players.
