Recommitted Marcus Windhager - re-signed for 4 more years

Ross avoided talking about him tonight on Footy Classified. Linked to GWS. Would make me sick if we traded him for Aleer tbh.

Is it really a big game when your team has 400 possessions for 8 goals?

He had 0 GA and 4 SI. Josh Ward, by comparison had 21 possessions for 11 SI. The Saints spent the day chipping the ball back and forth waiting for Richmond to fall asleep, then went into attack.

8 players scored 100+ fantasy points. For 8 goals.
So you’re comparing the score involvement and goal assist numbers of a guy who spent the great majority of the game playing in defence (Windhager), to the numbers of a guy who played presumably the whole game on or around the ball (Ward)?

Exactly how many goal assists would you expect from a guy who played predominantly across half back?

While for you guys, Sicily and Battle had 26 disposals each playing down back, and they only had 3 score involvements each. Even though Hawthorn scored a lot more than Windy’s team did.

The coaches seemed to think he went OK, with only Nas, Wilkie and Sinclair getting more coaches votes than Windy for the game.

Talk is that he’s asking us to pay him $850K PA and I think it’s pretty much unanimous on our board here that he’s highly useful, but simply isn’t worth a contract like that at this stage.

I wouldn’t have even thought that another club would be willing to offer him that to leave, let alone us being required to pay him that to stay.

He’s got a lot going for him, is very versatile (has played good games in the middle, on the wing and now down back, so far this year), but you’d still be paying him largely on potential if you were to pay him $850K PA.

Jarmen Impey had 20-ish possessions with 7 SI.

All Im saying is it wasnt a game to use as an example of anything good. 400 possessions for 8 goals. St Kilda spent the entire game chipping the ball around, not kicking goals. 8 players got 100+ fantasy points. No-one will have what they did remembered.

He’ll fit in well in the Giants midfield group. Trade scenario will be interesting as the Saints will certainly be paying Aleer more than what we’ll pay Windhager.
He's asking for the same that Aleer would be getting paid (based on reports). Why woupd he leave Saints if GWS are offering less?

Saints would be crazy to let this guy go over 100-200k per year.

He is breaking out this season and is only 22.

Watching him play for the last 18 months he is deadset following Finn Callaghan's trajectory to a tee. Young player who worked as a tagger on the outside and inside, tagging stopped and proves he can win his own ball inside and out. Is a great kick, can play inside, is super young.

If NAS left he would be Saints best midfielder next year in my opinion.

They offered Finn Callaghan 10 years 1.7 mil but think 800-850k (literally half the price) for a player following a similar or at worst 90% of the trajectory of that same player.

Would be a travesty to their list if he left at age 22 just as he is breaking out.

Considering Saints are lowballing him they likely wouldn't get much at the trade table either as they internally clearly don't rate him much.

Finn broke out the same way Windy is this season. Clear as day what a great player he is turning into.

But TDK is worth $1.7mill, Harley Reid is worth $2mill and Aleer is worth whatever stupid number has been thrown around?

Seems like Saints are willing to splash ridiculous money everywhere but on their own players....

Much different player to Finn. I see Windhager more in the Tom Green mould
I probably wouldn’t compare him to either. Both of those guys are huge units (both listed at 192cm), whereas Windy is listed at 185cm, and is a real endurance beast, with very good speed and agility, so he’s much better suited to outside running roles than Green, while also obviously having the ability to play inside.

Playing style wise he’s probably more like Finn (due to his greater speed than Tom), but Finns kicking is a weapon, while Windy’s is a lot more messy.

It’s a fair point, and I guess the reason for that is pretty simple.

You almost always have to pay more to get someone in from another club than you have to pay an equivalent player who’s already at your club.

Especially if you’re a “small”, non-destination club.

If we didn’t offer these guys (especially the likes of Reid, Rowell, Callaghan, TDK) huge amounts of money, we are simply NO CHANCE WHATSOEVER of them coming to play for us.

And where does that leave us?

With just the group we’ve got, which isn’t necessarily going to take us to the promised land.

We did the exact thing that you’re all suggesting we do a few years ago.

We paid all our good young players loads of money and didn’t have enough left to entice any serious guns from other clubs, which left our salary cap bulging, despite the fact we were mid-table.

So we’ve learned from that and are trying to get our guys now to stay for reasonable amounts, so that we have loads of cap space left so that we CAN get some serious guns from other clubs, and give ourselves (and our current players) the chance to actually win a flag.

It’s really that simple.

We aren’t doing this to spite or rip off our current players, we’re doing it to give them and the club and supporter base the best chance of WINNING A PREMIERSHIP.

So you’d hope they’d be on board with that idea, unless all they care about is money, and themselves.

As long as we’ve sold the plan to them successfully, which we may not have done, and perhaps need to better now.

Could be the last piece in Giants reestablishing a premiership quality midfield after loss of Taranto ,Hopper and Peatling probably left us 1 short through mids this year. While Rowston and Ough are coming through Windhager is exactly the type of player we need to add.Giants don’t get mentioned in much trade scuttlebutt so hopefully that means it’s a genuine possibility.Callaghan and Sandy Dragons connection also makes sense and we could easily satisfy saints in a trade deal and use money we offered for Aleer.Saints also owe us for giving them their captain and former academy and team Mascot Steele😀.

Apparently they said on Gettable that the clubs chasing him hard are Melbourne and Essendon. With North also sniffing around. But apparently they said he’s a super-loyal bloke, who will stay if we come to the table sufficiently.

We’re really in the exact same sort of position with him now that we were in when we gave the likes of Billings and Gresham fat contracts. They too were young and showing lots of promise, but were not yet fully proven.

And they never really lived up to them, which is why our cap was bulging about 4-5 years ago, yet we were mid-table.

So this would be why we’re wary of going this high with Windy. It’s still a sizeable gamble. He could be another Billings or Gresham, or he could be another Steele.

Wind is miles better those other 2 you quote
Billings and Gresham had real question marks on them similar stage career

Yeah so what do we reckon?

Mid-range second rounder?
Yeah I think so. Was trying to think of a trade of player of similar age and experience recently amd came up with Liam Henry who went for Saints future 2nd round pick (plus a swap of future 4ths), which ended up being pick 25 (pick 34 on the night after all the FA,FS and priority picks 🙄).

Trade value can never be high too if the he’s current at are refusing to pay him a fair deal for his age, potential and output this year.

Can’t lowball a player and then expect a good package back in a trade.

I think anyone left unsigned at this stage of the year is a good chance of leaving. I'm not saying either way but would love him to come to Essendon if he did leave the Saints. He's miles better than the last bloke we got from them. Would happily trade a second plus change for Windy and academy points.
