Recommitted Marcus Windhager - re-signed for 4 more years

He’ll sign on now Nasiah has committed.
Well, that's the relevant question, isn't it? Does he recommit because he's mates with Nas and wants to continue playing with him (which is entirely reasonable), or does he continue to look elsewhere for (a) the chance to play a pure midfield role & (b) more $$ than Saints are willing to pay him?

We will see in the fullness of time. The former outcome would not surprise me in the least.

Wind is miles better those other 2 you quote
Billings and Gresham had real question marks on them similar stage career
Not at those respective times of their careers.

Windy is 22yo this year.

Gresham at 20yo kicked 30 goals, and in the final round that year he kicked 5 on the MCG, against the Richmond team who a month later won the flag, then 6 months later- at still just 20yo- he kicked another 6 against them there, on his way to a 35 goal season, despite playing much more midfield time in the later rounds.

In the second half of that season, after that 6 goal game v Richmond, at just 20/21yo, he had games of

26 disposals 1 goal
25 & 2
24, 2 goals, 7 clearances
23 & 2
19 & 4

He was a gun who kicked 35 and would have kicked 40 goals + at 21yo, had he not played so much midfield later in the year, who then transitioned into full midfield the following year.

He was wayyyy ahead of Windy in their respective early years.

4th in the B&F at 21yo
6th in the B&F at 22yo

3 years of career-derailing significant injuries have left him a shadow of his former self.

While Billings at the age Windy is this year had 500+ disposals and kicked 23 goals, came 5th in the B&F, and received 11 Brownlow votes.

Including games of:

30 disposals and 5 goals, 3 Br votes
30 and 1, 3 votes
30 and 1, 1 vote
28 and 2
28 and 1, 3 votes
27 and 1
25 and 2
25 and 1
25 and 1
23 and 1
22 and 2, 1 vote

So we’ve been burned offering guys at this age big fat contracts in recent years, even though they’d both had top 5 B&F finishes by the age of 22, and were “goalkicking mids”, who could also play forward and kick a bag.

I hope we get this done, but I’m not going to pretend it’s not a gamble, or that it’s a certain bet.

and C. A chance of actually playing finals

I'd be shocked if he left if that was the offer.

I expect we'll pay him similar and he'll stay. Still a lot to play out for us though.
Strange that North would be going after ANOTHER midfielder tbh.

I think 800k is pretty big overs for him currently. If that's what the offer is....I'd be thinking again about matching if I was StKilda.
But I guess you're splashing cash so may as well

Yeah it will depend a lot on what may or may not happen for us re: TDK, Marshall, Steele, etc

We may not have the money to match.

Oh I didn't think the Reid thing was real. Wild

Sounds like we’ve been paying the bare minimum for a number of years now and it’s time to use or lose the excess cap.

Makes a change from us using the full cap on a bunch of muppets like we did the last 15 years.

We get smashed in transition every week. We have plenty of attacking mids but need a hard two-way running type for balance.

Couldn't North just transition a few of their dozen midfielders into that role? Why bring more in?
We tried with Powell and it didn't work, Wardlaw provides great pressure but can't sustain it over a full match. LDU has played more defensively minded this year and it's diminished his impact, he excels like on the weekend when he's focused on his offensive game.
