Hope it's not true, but it seems likely. I loved Blakey when he burst onto the scene: unfortunately his around the ground work didn't improve as we would have hoped, and the sub rule ended his career prematurely. It's a shame he didn't get one more game.

Well done Mark: key cog in our 2009 premiership. :thumbsu:

That was sort of my thinking too - surely he'd put his hat into the ring for another club, maybe? Although perhaps his management have made enquiries, with not much interest coming back.

If true, it's a sad way for a premiership player to bow out - but the introduction of the sub rule and the resultant change in direction/skillset for ruckmen did him no favours.

But nobody wants him. He was never well suited to the modern game to begin with and the sub rule probably killed off any remaining chances he had.

Hey, at least he didn't cost us the 2009 grand final....that bloke at Sydney goes alright though...

Bingo. Any negativity is far from warranted.

Thanks for playing a big part (88 games) in perhaps the greatest Geelong side of all time (2007-2011). All the best.

You just ripped the poor bugger of for 11 games, shameful

Apologies I see what you did there.

What fascinates me in all of this is how a guy went from loveable cult hero to Geelong public enemy number 1 within 3 years

My question is what happened?
Yes, the sub rule kept him out of the side, by why did everyone detest him so much?
Was it the wrap around sunnies on GF day 2007.
The rumours he was behind King's trade, giving the club an ultimatum?
Are we dirty we committed to Blake instead of Mumford?
Or was it that he never really improved from being a loping, lumbering, foal-like player and we just got sick of the fact he couldn't bend down and tackle. Or kick?

Or all of the above.

Be keen to know when people turned, or when they think others turned on him. Reckon it would make a great doco...Who Killed Mark Blake?

His manager would already have done the rounds during trade week with clubs to get an idea of whether he should nominate for the draft, that he has retired rather than do that is a pretty sure indicator that there would have been no takers anywhere, including GWS.

Maydok when all is said and done, the personal stuff is irrelevant if Mark Blake the player doesn't fit into the on-field plans in the future. Basically to take Blake into a game now would be a liability given that he would be forced to go forward rather than be benched.

People ran out of patience with the bolded I think. I would argue he was more of an ironic cult hero than a loveable one to begin with.

Mumford leaving was nothing to do with him.

07 GF & fallout didn't portray him well, rightly or wrongly. Outside of _Me_ I don't think too many cling to that now though.

Mark played a role in one of the greatest teams this club has put on the park, played 99 games and won a premiership.

We owe Mark a big thank you, as we do everyone who has played a role in delivering us the amazing joy we've been lucky enough to experience in the past five years.

He can walk away from the club with his head held high.

I wish him the best of luck.

Well said
Can I jump on your bandwagon.

Some people on here remember players on our list who never cracked it for a senior game more fondly than Mark Blake. His greatest mistake was apparently cementing his spot in a fantastic side for an extended period, because it meant he became an easier target for the vitriol of our supporters, than the anonymous dozens who have been in and out of the club within three years for a total of zero senior games. Not everyone in a premiership side can be an All-Australian. Blake was a valuable backup ruckman for the majority of our club's most successful era. I salute him.

Blake joins the list of greats such as Ablett Snr, Matthews and Carey, as men considered genuine greats of the game, but never won a Brownlow

I think that or that's definitely the reason why 99% of the knockers on here think anyway. My cousin plays for Brisbane and some of the grief he has copped on their board is very unjustified and most of it is complete bullshit, you could say the same about Blake on here perhaps. He showed up to mad monday this year so you can't say the players hated him to a Justin Murphy level or anything. We need to find a new hate figure now.

Thanks for 2009 Mark and all the best. :thumbsu:

Good tap ruckman.

Don't think I've seen another AFL player panic or dispose of the ball as poorly as Blake though. Bloke could barely kick it.
Bit of a myth, that. His drop punts over 30 metres were more than serviceable.

Your constant love and defense of Blake in every single negative post/opinion is very touchy.

Almost forgot that you were a mod.

I don't love him and it is time for Blake to move on from Geelong.

But I hate people asserting myths and I hate how perception has become reality on this board.

Some of the stuff people state about Blake is downright sickening.

How about you critique what I say rather than who I am?

I thought he was a very good tap ruckmen and i good link up player. backline would love to kick to him and the mids running past wanting the hand ball.

Goodluck mark

I still reckon he will play next year GWS or Richmond maybe

**** it ill be the arseh*le then.

Overall he was a shit player, had his moments when otto was injured.

I wouldnt categorise him as a footballer, just a tall bloke with long arms and an ex clubman as a father.

Well done on what you achieved, and enjoy your overpaid salary.

There are plenty of arseholes on here, the mods just happened to delete them because of the lies they make up to suit their story.

He was an average player, with an average career, in a very successful team.

He did not tell the club to de-list King, he did not force Mumford to go to Sydney, he did not force Geelong to overpay him and he did not cause everything that is wrong with Geelong.

In his day was a fine tap ruckman, and even on his last few outings he beat the likes of Jolly and Mumford.

Whoever celebrates this day is just a puppet of the meatheaded media who made you believe he wasn't worthy of playing a single game, when he clearly deserved all 99.

We used to have that with white sauce when I was a kid, didn't like it then and no better now.

I agree. I remember one 55m bomb late in the 2009 Prelim final that hit Chappy on the chest at the top of the square.

I know if I was a lumbering ruckman with guys like Ablett, Bartel and Selwood running past looking for a handball, I'd be reluctant to put boot to ball too.
