Gary Ablett's three-goal first half against Essendon on Friday night has left direct opponent Mark McVeigh a shattered man, assistant coach Robert Shaw has revealed.
The Essendon defender was so devastated at being comprehensively beaten by Ablett, he had to be consoled by coach Kevin Sheedy at training to help restore his confidence, Shaw said on radio station SEN.
"Poor old Mark McVeigh, he's devastated at the moment,'' Shaw said.
"He (Ablett) made a mess of us and he made a mess of Mark McVeigh.
"But as Sheeds said tonight to get him up, you've been beaten, keep your head up.''
Ablett was at his mercurial best against the Dons in the scratch match in Bendigo, fending off McVeigh at every opportunity to swoop at the foot of most contests.
Showing pace and strength, Ablett capped his work with his customary accuracy in front of goals with three snapped majors as the difference between the two sides.
It prompted Sheedy to later describe Ablett as a cross between former electrifying Geelong rover Billy Goggin and fearless Hawthorn champion Leigh Matthews.
"That's the analogy Sheeds used to help get Mark through it because this bloke (Ablett) is absolutely genuine,'' Shaw said.
"Our blokes were just going 'how good is this bloke (Ablett)'?''
Sheedy later dragged McVeigh, sacrificing prime-mover Damien Peverill to mind Ablett in the second half.
The star Cat came off in the third quarter with an eye problem and did not add to his goal tally in an intense last term.
But his first half was still good enough to prompt Shaw to rate Ablett in the competition's top 20 players, after booting 35 goals in his third AFL season last year.
"Mike Sheehan had this bloke at 50. I reckon in two hours in front of 14,000 fans in Bendigo he moved up about 29 places,'' he said.
Especially considering Ablett's quality opposition in McVeigh, who had a terrific record on the competition's best small forwards in Fremantle's Paul Medhurst and Eagles' Phil Matera, Shaw said.
