Yeah, spine tingling stuff. Who was it that was worried about him not re-signing midway through the season? This guy is what EFC are all about. The leadership shown by McVeigh, Hille & Lloyd to lead by example and wear your heart on your sleeve really makes me feel so much more optimistic about the future.

Great speech McVeigh, great leader, great bloke, great example.

Cut him in half and theres nothing but Red and Black in there.

His love of the club is magnificent and hopefully some of the players out there on sunday can get some of his love for the club.

Did anyone remember what James Hird said @ the B/F last year??? He talking about how he recieved a note under his door from McVeigh, pleading with him to play 1 more year! Supposedly the letter sounds just like his speech on Sunday!

Someone needs to YouTube this. I've taped it on Foxtel IQ and watched it about 10 times.

Not word for word but the general gist of it:

"Just quickly, I want to say something. Remember this feeling right now, don't ever forget it. We've had injuries, well, it starts today. Remember how bad it feels, lets go to pre-season and DO SOMETHING next year, let's F'N DO SOMETHING. This is us, let's do it, we are Essendon!!!"

Chills.

Not only this quality - but the media have jumped on board also - he's one of the most in demand players on all football shows - especially the Sunday programs. Thoroughly deserved too.

He deserves the praise he gets for showing so much passion. He is the spiritual leader of the club and should be the captain all the time.

What about when he lost the plot against the Bulldogs and was lucky to not be suspended.

He is too easily sucked in and Hille should be our next captain imo.

Agree.

He talks well, but his actions are still questionable.

I still think he has an element of selfishness that he needs to rid himself of.
When things are going his way, he doesn't handle things as he should.

Hille wills himself to do better when things are down, McVeigh tries to break skulls.

& this is a problem how?

a stint as captain could well be what he needs to temper his aggression & round out his game, ala sam mitchell

Hille is a great player but i'm not sure he'd make a great captain...i think the pressure when he was captain two years ago got to him a little.

I love Mark, he's a great player on the field and a great person off it...(even if he is a little hotheaded at times!). I'd be proud to have him as our captain.

I for one like the hot-headness. Call me irresponsible and crazy, but I think at times our team are a bit soft on the field and don't stick up for the man next to him *AT TIMES*. I don't want us to be the "nice guys" you know. As McVeigh said "WE ARE ESSENDON", we demand RESPECT. We will STAND UP and demand this respect. I'm not condoning going out and just punching blokes out cold, but McVeigh doesn't do this either. He goes out, he gets fired up, he gets passionate, he wills on his team mates, and at times he reaches the border of irresponsible behaviour, but never does he cross it to a high magnitude. He is the type of bloke the young kids would completely look up to and be excited about going into battle with.

As for Hille, I think he has great leadership skills aswell, but I think with the added responsibility his game begins to lack. I think a vice-captain role is perfect, can inspire, by more his actions. He is a good leader because he leads by example. Best left to play his footy.

Just my two cents...

I don't disagree with you, I just think McVeigh has times where he forgets about going for the footy.

Hille never does that.

I do think McVeigh would make the better captain of the two, but I think he needs to get the selfishness out of his game before that happens. Luckily he has a year or two before he it's an issue anyway.

I don't think he would care if he is captain or not -- being in the leadership group will be enough. He can still show leadership on and off field even if he isn't the official captain, like he does now. He just cares about the club and will put his all into whatever role he has.

It sets a poor example...

yes, the club has suffered an explosion of players running around thumping the opposition, terrible example mark

I don't think Sam Mitchell is a great captain.

'great'? probably not, but defiantly 'unsociable', now who at essendon best fits that description...

i know most captaincy appointments are of the 'level headed' variety, with good reason usually, however doesn't hurt to break the mold occasionally & go with true mongrel.

heres hoping anyway
