Meanwhile, Neeld has ruled himself out of the race for a senior coaching position this year.

"(I won't be applying) at the moment," Neeld said.

"I’m pretty happy here at Collingwood and finals campaigns are finals campaigns and we need every single person concentrating on what we’re about.

"I’m no different to any of the other assistants."

Neeld admitted he had considered senior coaching, with openings currently available at Port Adelaide and Essendon.

"Everyone thinks about it. I think if you get a job as an assistant coach, you want to be the best possible assistant you can be," he said.

"We all have thoughts of where you want to go in the future, but my theory would be if you’re an assistant coach, be the very best assistant coach you can be and if you do a good job, someone may notice."

Appears all are focused on the big prize this year. I was little concerned he may have a dip at the Essendon job and then we would have lost him prior to the end of the year.

Appears an excellent coach in the making.

You bet me to the post. I just read the same article.

That is great that he is committed to his position at Collingwood and rather than looking after his own interests of becoming an AFL coach.

A great big toast to you Neeldy!

big fan of many of the coaching choices at the pies, Neeld included
not everyone was a superstar AFL player either, clearly the recruiting team looks at skills and ability in a coaching sense, not just playing (except for maybe Bucks, but we can live with that one!)

Luke Beveridge is doing wonders with our development squad, Richardson was with us before he moved to essendon, plus we had mckenna, laidley and scott as well before they moved to senior positions.

From a purely selfish point of view, I'm so glad Port Adelaide shut Neeld out so early in the selection process, even though it was a massive mistake.

I hope they appoint Primus, he will not be anywhere near as good of a senior coach as Neeld could/would be.

Neeld, since his arrival at Collingwood, has had nothing but the highest praise granted from anyone who has worked with him.

MM stated the other night on the couch that he could coach now, that's enough of an endorsement for me.

Personally, I hope he is still around for at least Buckley's first year, as Mark has been remarkable in what he has done for this football club.

Fcuk yeah this is what I want to hear

I wonder if Collingwood can almost develop a coach development program with Mick as Director of Coaching?

We seem to be developing some pretty good Senior Coaches since we've had Mick, and since Director of Coaching was a role developed exclusively for Mick, I don't see why we couldn't pioneer a Coaching Development program which could encourage players to develop leadership skills that allow them to become virtual on field coaches, and also attract great young coaching talent to the club as assistants.

I was thinking along the same lines, considering multiple former assistant coaches to Mick are now senior coaches. Despite other deficiencies, MM is above all else a clear mentor and trainer as much as he is a tactician. His work with developing players like Thomas et al, just illustrates his capacity for teaching and developing successful players and coaches.

Malty, you're a grumpy old prick but you do a fantastic job <3

I agree.. since we have some of the largest amounts of income we really should be focusing on programs internally that focus on player development, skills coaching and mental tuning. honestly this is the stuff that will make our football club great one day. There is nothing in the salary cap that says you can't spend money on football operations!

Good stuff Neele the pay and rewards would probably be the same here in his role as it would be at Essendon lol
