On Second viewing and I liked Dumans game. He locks down his opponent pretty well for a tallish type and his marking and kicking out of defence was good. I reckon he will be a long term backman in this group, maybe grow into a Shane Parker role.

I think the main thing holding Duman back is his inconsistency. He does pretty well but the brain fades are usually big ones. Hopefully he can eliminate these after a bit more experience.

I think he is undervalued here. He is a decent fringe option for our backline and has some versatility. Quite like seeing him developing as an option for smaller players even though he may be outclassed at times. He still has some development. I thought we were moving away from midfielders rolling through hbf, although Aish, Conca and Hill are looking likely to role through there. But purely from a defensive point of view we have good cover:

Ryan Hamling Wilson
Logue Pearce Young

Cox, Hughes, Carter, Duman, Pina, Watson. That is impressive established and developing talent to support a fantastic back 6.

So you've just completely disregarded TG's expert analysis? I've thrown a few hungey-thou on Carlton for the premiership. It's pretty clear from their performance they are a lock to win the whole thing. Why did Freo have to go and play well and win that pre-season game? It could have been them!!! When will our club ever learn?
Yep ignored TG because it’s on like Donkey Kong and in case you didn’t see we beat Carlton in a PS game.

Ah hope ....... more contagious than the coronavirus
C'mon TG no-one here was saying the win meant we were now premiership fancies. But surely even the most pessimistic Freo supporter (is that you?) could see some improvement in a few of our youngsters, a good first hit out for our new faces, and some semblance of a game plan that can move the ball without relying on a big contested mark down the line or the fast break out the back? I very much doubt the team is getting ahead of itself and taking the week off based on that performance :) And from what I've read on here none of the supporters on BF are either.

It perhaps wasn't under immense pressure but you can only play what is put in front of you. If your take home was we'd be better off being in Carlton's position then it's obvious you'd made up your mind before the game had been played even - it was clearly a lose-lose game for Freo in your mind.

While Blakely's disposal by hand and foot was really bad on the weekend I think he also deserves some credit for the fact that he hit 2 i50 targets with the new quick chip style we are implementing
A couple of his missed handballs in close were the right idea to, one was missed by the receiving player because he hesitated at the last second. Blakelys game wasn't that bad honestly.

The irony being that Lobb’s big contested marks were far more exciting than safe little 15 meter kicks and uncontested marks. I think the entire crowd was hoping to see Frederick on a fast break burning off his opponent and sending it long to Lobb.

Lobb's contested marks were mostly defensive though - not for us to move the ball.

I don't know about others but I was pretty excited when Crowden hit Dixon on the tit leading up at him from FF, when Lobb hit Schultz i50 in the corridor, when Tabs hit McCarthy on the lead after Cam had run from the middle of the ground (having been part of the possession chain) and led back to the ball i50, and so on with all 17 of our marks inside 50. I much preferred watching that to the bomb it to the goal square and hope some tall bastard can clunk it out of the pack.

Sure, decent forwards being on the end of a good delivery is always nice. But some tall bastard clunking it out of the pack is pretty much my favourite moment in football, and even better in the forward line. Can’t wait to see Lobb doing that forward (I don’t expect him to be on a lead).

I used to like P Salmon on the lead, 206cms and once they put their mits out front, game over😀
Kennedy is the same with multiple leading patterns and big frame, sure contested marks are exciting, but every time in the past we
Have over played this, we have made McGovern, etc, look elite, with Lake winning a Norm Smith.
Same with Tabs, leading forwards that find space that can also take a grab are worth their weight in gold.

Nope

Never again pre season

Never again

By the way the Carltons shoes bit was purely about supporter expectations , god knows if teams are better off winning games in the pre season or not

I think for most years it is better to read basically zilch into pre season games (smashing the eventual premiers in 2018 case in point) but when its the first year of a coach with a very different philosophy and new players, it's not unreasonable to be looking into potential changes in structures, player positions / performances, game methodology etc. The danger comes in using it to make predictions about where teams will finish based on it, a team like Carlton or even Sydney could still easily finish ahead of us, Gold Coast is still very likely to finish last etc.

If our current first choice forwards are fit and available then Lobb is sitting one on one, as is Taberner and Hogan. Happy for them to be receiving the ball long and fast. That is a win for us.

Bit one-dimensional. Like to see the players learn to take the best option. Sometimes that is a lead up forward, other times it is to the advantage of the long target.

Would love to see Lobb play forward only, or pinch hitting only in the forward half. Funny thing is that Salmon
always wanted to play ruck but S Madden was a superstar, Lobb wants to play forward.
I think it is imperative that we leave him where he wants to be, and develop others to pinch hit, depth.
Having Meek, Dixon, at Peel playing forward/ruck, with Cox Mr fixit.
Of coarse this could all change depending on Hogan? But at this stage we need ruck depth and a settled spine.

Sturt - Looked to me as a very promising type, his speed and size is going to be really valuable for us. He appeared to be really good for our structure, supporting the talls and the smalls. He only had nine disposals, but should have had 10 and two goals if Schultz had found him.
It was nice finally seeing him run around in the 1s. The commentators were a bit enamoured with his as well. If he can fill a spot on half forward and Schultz continues on we're a pretty dangerous forward half.
