After justified early season unlikelihood, the Moeller announcement has us firmly in the speculative mix regarding round two of the GWS Mini-draft.
In the ideal situation, Fremantle will end up with the most highly rated 17 year old in the country, with the added bonus that he may be a West Australian.

In this thread, I ask simply who and why?

Please leave out speculation into what it may take to get the deal done, whether or not we are truly in the mix and whether or not we are better served by retaining Moeller.

In this thread you are Simon Lloyd, you have just secured FFC the right to pick one in the GWS MD.

Who will you choose?

In an ideal world I would go Martin and then look to pick up one of Shaw or Paperone in the draft

I choose Martin. I reckon he has more potential to grow. Hogan is currently bigger and stronger than most of his opposition and he uses that advantage well. Martin is a rake and will only get better with bulk. Like Hilly.

My thoughts:

Moeller+Ibbotson/silvagni for Pick 2 in minidraft

We then take Hogan as martin will be gone at minipick 1

Pick 1 in the ND is used on the best inside MID available

If there is a choice between the 2, Martin would be brilliant for you guys.

Saw him play in Kalgoorlie this year and he took a brilliant hang late in the game at the end of a carnival. Even after the heavy workload and having tired legs he lifted when he was required. Good trait for a youngster.

I'd go hogan for sure, apparently a bigger, better version of Jack Darling.
In the ND go for Shaw, paprone or jankske.
Having two highly credentialed key forwards on our list, would balance our list superbly IMO.

If we can only get the second pick, then you'd think that the guesswork will probably be done for us.

I agree with taking Martin first if available, but it would be good to bolster our KPF stocks with two highly rated youngsters (ie. Hogan and one of Shaw or Pap - want Shaw bad though).

I like the sound of this, but i'd still much prefer Hogan, it's what we need so much more than another talent skinny kid who currently sits at 64kg's. He won't be doing much inside work for a long time and we have other skinny kids we're yet to see are capable of making it.
Mini-draft is before the ND?
The minidraft commences 10 mins after trade period ends, in October. So, yes.

He can't play for a year anyway.

Grab Martin.

Grab Shaw.

Grab Cloke or Goddard.

Its gonna be hard to stuff this one up

If we're in a rush for a premiership like Ross has said, you'd think we'd go with the big fella.

Yeah, I also have reservations about his dad and this crap about him playing in Gero for $500 a game, reeks of misguided arrogance to me.

Maybe it isnt misguided? Everything I have read on here about him is that he is an amazing talent (cross between Hill and Buddy??) and if he is getting paid $500 a game as a 17 year old the coaches at Gero obviously agree. Chris25 who knows more about these kids than most still believes he is the better talent of the two, despite Hogan being flavor of the month. I believe he also thought Martin was better than O'Meara despite the hype last year.

But like I said its tough to mess this up. We will end up with one of Jack Martin, Jesse Hogan or Craig Moller for free.

Who cares about talent, Ross Lyon doesn't.. Look at Michael Walters if you want to get an idea of where talent and ego can get you. I don't care if you've got the talent of 10 Garry Abletts, if you're not grounded you're gonna get a rude awakening when you step into the AFL. I just prefer we went with the safer option.

Martin is the better pick as we want a KPF to play next year, Hogan can't.

So we get Martin and as others have said draft, trade or free agent a KPF onto the list.

If Martin is as good as other top 5 midfielders, it would be our only chance (in my opinion) to be able to get our hands on one for a long, long time. We wouldn't be able to cough up enough for a trade and I don't see us bottoming out.

You can buy big bodied, tall marking players later in their careers but gun midfielders can drag you to a grand final and nobody will let a Judd linger in the lower leagues because his kicking at goal is a bit off or trade him for less than the cost of replacement.

I want gun midfielders. They will make average forwards look like super heroes.

A friend of mine had a beer over east with recruiting expert Kevin Sheehan who, for what it's worth, rates Jesse Hogan as the best 17 year old talent coming out of WA. I understand Hogan comes from a very steady family background, is a standout player from Hale School & at 193cm he's already taller than Matthew Pavlich.

Pav is getting on & we've stuffed our KPF draft choices in recent years. Every time I see Jack Darling dominating (& imagine how much better Freo would be if we'd taken him over Pitt), it reminds me how much we need some good tall FWDs.

I think it's obvious that KPFs are a far more pressing need for Freo than skinny, flashy kids (especially ones coming from families with questionable loyalty / values). Not to mention the scarcity factor of talented Key Forwards, compared to midfielders.

For me, Jesse Hogan, followed by Mason Shaw.

Cheers. I tend to agree, and this echoes my hopes for us this draft season.

I would prefer go Martin. With our first two picks if we can nab two of Shaw, Paparone, Howson, Jaeksch we will be doing well. That leaves us with two KPP this year and then next year we have a top 3-5 pick mid coming in and then we can use our first pick on a mid or tall depending on our situation

Gee I hope our recruiters aren't as one-eyed as everyone on here. There are also gun SA's and Vic players available, they don't have to be from WA. While I do share the romanticism of recruiting players from WA it will be interesting to see how the rest of the carnival goes and then draft camp.

The benefit of being on an AFL list a year earlier will benefit the skinny/light players a bit more therefore Jack Martin would be able to steadily add weight to his light frame. Purely from a list management POV Hogan would surely be the priority because if the draft doesn't go our way we could miss out on the KPF's we have in sight.

I like the idea of getting Martin IF as you said we could nab 2 of Shaw, Paparone, Howson etc
