Guys guys guys the kid is a jet. Don't stress about those seemingly 'arrogant' comments re Hird-like. Because he is totally accurate. Can read the game unfolding before everyone else. He has more 'tricks' than Blair in my opinion. He will really flourish being in an AFL environment. Will be a beauty dont worry. You should be happy and celebrating landing this bloke. Can't speak highly enough of him. Enjoy

Very encouraging to see opposition fan give such a glowing report of him :thumbsu:
From limited footage he does have a fair leap, nice mitts and great agility on him.

Ceglar turned out to be an alright get, I'm sure Hine thinks this is the best way to get bang for our buck with such a late first round pick. It means we'll need to hope he pulls a rabbit out of the hat in the 40s-50s like he did with Fasolo though.

GWS can pre-list him as he has nominated for the draft before (2010) and didn't get selected.

Clarke is the elite endurance gut running link player. Could snare Johnnos' role if he drops off. He's only got a year max. left anyway.

One thing I thought a weakness in our team, is that explosive pace in the forward half.

Blair, Krak, Beams, Sidey, Didak, Caff & Fasolo are not quick by foot. Elliott should add to the balance, probably replaces Dick on our list.

If you thought the first vid was Medhurst, wait until you see this one. Some of his tricks are exceptional.

This is his 2010 season highlights- he even wears the #7!

Like the look of him. Really like that he can kick on both feet. Hopefully they didn't just flip the frames horizontally to make it look like he kicked left-footed. ;)

Interesting comments from Mick. Sounds like had he remained as coach Clarke would not be back. Bucks clearly rates him.

''In the rooms after the game, Marty told me he wanted to play forward or in the midfield rather than continue in the back line. When I asked him why, he said: 'I want to win games off my own boot, like Dids and Leon.'
''I then started to doubt his acceptance of the role he had to play within our structure and his willingness to be a team player.

'What became obvious to me with Marty - and I knew other coaches would soon pick up on it too - was his lack of a 'right side', his struggle with handpassing and his inability to effectively negotiate stoppages, which, in turn, exposed our back line.''

I have no doubt Marty will have matured alot since then and many key personnel such as Hine have been wooing him for awhile now. The key players know what they are doing, I trust them.

I'm happy to have him back but very strange from. Perhaps it was because of Mick's "loss of faith" in Marty that played a part in Marty losing confidence and support from the coach which affected his form and decision to leave in the first place? Not a dig at Mick, just food for thought.

Also, his lack of a 'right side' should really have been nothing new or surprising to Mick, considering we've had Ben Johnson on our books for over a decade now and we've all gotten used to it lol.

Really very insightful article.

Very interesting that Mick views Marty as such a limited player.
I would argue that all those Irish boys have limited games for at least the first 5 or so seasons because they haven't grown up with the game. So deficiencies are to be expected. But it is up to the coaching staff and players to chip away and work to eliminate these weaknesses.

Why Buckley rates Marty is because he understands Marty's drive and desire for greatness and he understands that he will work for it. Marty was a star back home and he expects no different here in Aus.
Sometimes this sort of expectation for greatness can be a bad thing - but this is more so in aging vets (think Akermanis) more so than players who still have time such as Marty.

My feel is that Mick probably doesn't like Marty's interpretation of team concepts. But it is also at the same time partly Marty because he possibly doesn't understand the value of getting stops v scoring and how getting stops is just as important in winning games.
Marty's whole ideal system seems to revolve around kicking the winning score which is the ideal system of a forward - which he was in Ireland and when playing back perhaps Mick didn't feel that Marty had truely bought into that concept that stops wins games.
This certainly is something which needs to be changed to a degree and we really need to drill that defensive side into him, but I wouldn't give up on him progressing in this area - with the way the game has changed Marty will have to adapt to this change pretty quickly and I expect him to learn this pretty early on.

I'm an advocate of moving Marty onto a wing or forward flank and letting him free wheel a bit and play as an attacking player - which suits his instincts best. His left boot is fantastic and he weights his kicks so beautifully and has that great penetration which could be best utilised setting up forwards for goal scoring attempts. Has the endurance to play a more hard running role which he could do on a wing pretty easily.

Certainly the defensive side will need to be worked on (tackling isn't something that comes naturally to the Irish and is something he will need to put allot of time into). Learning to navigate the stoppages will be even more important if he is to play up field, then building the opposite boot and become quicker by hand would be the other things he looks at.

He has the work ethic to do all this as well as further building on his strengths - which he can build into serious weapons.

As for the trade of pick 25. I probably wouldn't pay that much. Jamie Elliott might be a handy piece because he fills a need. But would have expected a fair bit more in return - think we could do better in the draft with a Brandon Ellis or similar.
None the less not displeased if this happens as reported. Will be very happy to have Marty back and adding Elliott is a logical choice, I clearly don't rate him as highly as Hine and co, but his game with Vic Country v Tasmania in the U18 champs was terrific and you only have to watch that game to know that he can play.

Jamie Elliott looks a lot more valuable that marty clarke. Can we just keep Elliott cheers.. Oh and we want that first round draft pick back whoever is getting it cheers..
We now have another receiver who does not tackle

We all know what a premium MM placed on defending, and the 'apprenticeship' he puts seemingly natural attackers like Thomas through before unleashing them.

Maybe Marty was too honest for his own good. I could see Mick getting dirty on someone and all.

But even more interesting after player comments at the Copeland about Mick not giving up on any player - intriguing to know whether either one of them gave up on the other, or it really was about going home to be a teacher etc.

It certainly seemed like an odd decision 'mid-career'; and now coming back.

Now that Mick's had his say, it will be interesting to hear what if anything Marty wants to add to the discussion.

Also could Replace MaCaffer

Though I guess Bucks and Hine Really Rate Him
Think he might be a bit short at 175 to be a medium sized forward, I'm not too sure... how tall was Medhurst?

With that article, I see Clarke maybe being moved into the forward line now. Definitely don't have anything against that.

Well Medhurst was around 177cm and Elliot seems to have a very good Overhead and Contested Mark

I doubt Elliot will get a game in 2012. May even struggle in 2013.

Why do you say that?

Have not seen him play Lately so I can't make a Comment as he broke his Collar Bone

He'll play as a small forward. I'd say that we have enough players who are ahead of him to get a game, some of which will be able to rotate through the midfield. It will be their position to lose. Unless there are a few injuries in the small man department, or his forward defensive work is outstanding, I'd see 2012 as a development year for him. He may sneak in for a game in 2013 depending on our list, but at this stage he'll be competing with at least Dids, Blair, Fasolo, Beams, Rounds, Clarke, Ugle, Caff for that type of role.

That quote from Malthouses book is pretty sad. Clarke should've just played the role he asked, but I don't think he deserved to be dropped to the VFL and play the rest of the year there just because he had the temerity to ask the coach to be played in a position he preferred. Guess it shows the flipside to Mick, he was generally a good man manager but didn't like being questioned.

Bit of an odd article....why did Mick cite his inability at stoppages leaving the backline exposed? He was part of the backline, not the midfield. Most of our backline would struggle in this area as well, surely.

Definitely agree that Clarke should make sure his right foot is at least useable. It hurts to be too one sided if your primary function is to run and use the ball with your feet.

Also, I don't see an issue with Clarke asking Mick to move to the forward line. He's well within his rights to ask for it to happen if he thinks he'd be better there. The only thing that would be an issue is if he sulked after being told no, which may or may not have happened. Who knows.

Make a Good Point but well with Caff and Beams Possible Leaving.

Well Elliot could come out and have a Huge Pre-Season and you never know from There
