18 months after the deal was done. I think we can definately say we got the better deal!

Kris Massie (43 Carlton) 22 Adelaide

Ben Nelson (40 Carlton) 12 Adelaide

v's

Andrew Eccles (42 Adelaide including 98 GF) 11 Carlton (still on list)

David Gallagher (31 Adelaide) unable to find games for Carlton (not many anyway :) and was delisted in 2002)

I think that Kris Massie is definately the pick of the bunch. I think he is fitting in well and is proving his worth. Not conviced about Ben Nelson, I think he has to do something specatacular in the last 10 games to ensure he is on our list next year.

I thought they were two separate deals: Massie for Eccles; Nelson for Gallagher.

Massie for Eccles was a win for us

Nelson for Gallagher was lose-lose

Massie has been great for us in the role of a rebounding defender. :)

Sadly Eccles appears finished as a player because to his injuries, which is a shame. He was great in 1998.

Gallagher looked promising early in his career with the Crows. Strangely his form just tapered off badly. Pity.

Nelson is just a complete waste of space; worst player on our current list.

There is no question we got the better of that deal. Massie has been very good in the last month off the half back flank. He fast becoming a vital cog in our back line. I would just like him to get a touch more pace and improve his disposal a bit and he would be in our best 18.

When Smart retires we don't have any stand out to take over his role but Massie is the pick of the bunch. What I particularly like about him is his willingness to put his body on the line. His "courage levels" are up there with Torney. I think we basically got a potential 200 game player for our club for Eccles. Galllagher for Nelson was a dud for dud trade but Massie on the other hand is a bargain pick up.

Go you good thing!!!!!!:)

That's how bad Daniel Schell is; he's not even the best at being the worst. :p

I rank Schell above Nelson as he did play one or two good games for us last season.

On the topic this time. :)

Eccles was finished when we passed him on. Not because of ability but because of his body - one soft tissue injury after another, and had hardly played a game in the 2 years before we traded him. At his best he got the ball well, but those hospital balls into the forward line!! No thank you!!

On the other hand Massie is a really courageous utility who can play in a number of positions. To get a young player of his ability for a young but broken down player was a real coup for the Adelaide Footy Club as Massie will be a Crows player for many years IMO.

Working out the winner of the other trade of Gallagher for Nelson is comparable to 2 batsmen discussing who made the best duck!!! :D

Smart 188cm 92kg.
Massie 188cm 87kg.

Whilst Massie lacks some of Smarts more "freakish" abilities, he lacks nothing in the courage stakes.

If he gets over his CFS fully and spends a summer in the weights room, we have something of a replacement for Smart as Stiffy suggests.

What worries me about Adelaide's future is:

Bickley can be covered to some extent by Bode, although he is no where near as consistent and has some freakish goal sneak type skills which may be lost.

Smart. Maybe Massie although he is not in the same calibre really.

Stevens. ?? Says himself he has two years. Maybe Rutten?

Clarke. ?? Is 30 this year and is fit for now touch wood. Two to three years, then what?

Forward line. ?? Has been our major problem since the departure of Mods. We'll continue to fill potholes in the short term.

Hart. ?? Fingers crossed he plays forever, but realistically three to four years maximum.

And by 2005 or so, we would want to see some McLeod/Roo/Goody level midfielders emerging too.

We have become very good at patching holes over the past few years, but we may be fast approaching a period where we have more holes than fabric. The call was made for our youngsters to stand up in the last few weeks, and they did, but the reality is they are servicable and not superstars.

Where is the future of our club?

Mattner?
Reilly?
Gallagher?
Doughty?
Begley?

All servicable, but are they future leaders? Future match winners?

John**** is the only really exciting prospect from where I stand. Hentschel etc may have potential written all over them, but then so did one D. Gallagher.

We are going for a flag and that's great. Let's hope we win one (or two). But in doing so, we are blooding basically no rookies and our young talent can't force their way into our "highly experienced" line up.

I have grave concerns about the Adelaide Football Club circa 2005.

I agree with you Napsyd. That really hit home watching Denis Pagan the other night and thinking about the Carlton youngsters. Here's a club that copped it up the rear at last years draft, they're going to cop it again next year and everyone is saying that the club won't recover from that for years.

But after 12 rounds this year they've had 2 rising star nominations in Fisher and Waite, and to be quite honest, they probably have a more talented group of youngsters than we do.

Mattner - If he is the future then its looking really bleak.

Reilly - will be a superstar and a matchwinner. I just hope he stays with us.

Gallagher - will always be a decent player and has what it takes to be a match winner but will he find it? My guess is no.

Doughty - See Gallagher

Begley - If he can stay injury free I think he would surprise many. Could be a gun but at this stage he is only a servicable player

Schuback - is another one that I would rate as a future gun. Time will tell

Hentschel etc may have potential written all over them, but then so did one D. Gallagher.
Thats f*cking cruel mate, mentioning Hentschel as D. Gallagher.:p

I agree we really need to use our draft picks this time around. Its basically a MUST to get our 1st 2 picks right. At the time when we need KPP and Ruckman most, the draft doesn't have many of those. It looks like a really thin draft as far as KPP and ruckman are concerned.:(

This discussion is all sounding rather depressive...

Firstly, the Blues have had more rising star nominations, because Pagan is rebuilding his side - ie. youngsters have more opportunities. Whereas we have a more settled side which is harder to break into as a youngster.

We have some potential good young talent - it is just they are largely untested at this stage. You can't expect them to become an instant gun player - none of our current guns did in the 1st instance. eg. Roo, Macca & Goody all did their apprenticeship off a HBF.

The immediate concern in the next few years will be key forwards & a ruckman to backup ruckman for Biglands. Sarge looks like he is up to AFL level, but we need options to replace Carey & Stevens (perhaps sooner than we thought - or if he plays down back). We have Rutten & Hentschel, but need to draft/trade for more options/depth. What would we give up to get an Ottens?

Midfield wont be a problem for a while as all our guns will be around for a while yet (if they can stay injury-free). We always seem to have youngsters coming through - confident the likes of Bode, Reilly, Stiffy, Doughty, etc will fill the void - ie. expect some will develop into gun players to take over the breech. We don't seem to have problems finding new midfield talent.

Hopefully it p1sses him off and he kicks eight next time he pulls on the tri-colours! :D

Sorry mate!

What worries me is that there are potential holes in all aspects of our team (perhaps excluding midfield) due to the age of our stars and the fact that a lot of energy has been spent on trying to fix forward line problems whilst neglecting other areas which have been deemed to be OK.

These holes may prove to much to fill in the short term.

Bode is good but not in the superstar class. Not sure if he will get much better, he turns 24 this week.

Reilly. The jury is still firmly out on him. May be a gun, may be servicable. Also certainly has the "wanna go home" factor hanging over his head. Will be interesting to see where his allegances lie come October. Hope he stays. Hope he WANTS to.

Stiffy will be a star no doubt.

Doughty will never be a gun IMO, but a good solid contributor for sure. I have little doubt that he or Gags will get used as tradebait at the end of 2003.

Our club has been blessed with some great players, hard workers and stars over the years. The question is will we be so lucky with the next generation?

In answer to the original question, put it this way, I've still got the scars from the cartwheel I did through my neighbour's plate-glass window when I heard of the trade :p

As far as the topic goes, Massie has been the big winner ( along with Adelaide). I was very surprised to read he is the same height as Nigel; he strikes me as smaller than that.

Hasnt stopped showing his courage and desperation since late last year-hopefully he will become a career player at Adelaide.

Of the younger group that has been discussed John**** and Doughty have potential to be future leaders and maybe Bode.
