i do not mean to undermine anyones job, but guess who i saw working at a freight company stacking pallets on arvo shift in tullamarine?
thats right, former carlton captain Lance Fatty Whitnall....
we kinda overheard him saying to another bloke ' YEA I PISSED IT ALL UP A WALL'...
isn't he coaching somewhere? maybe an in between job? maybe his missus blew it all?
seems a long way away from his playing days earning what, 600K???

You see some former players going into coaching or media and they stay in the spotlight, but you can sometimes forget about those who vanish from the public eye.

I work with a former Manly and Leeds rugby league premiership winner, Qld State of Origin rep, and Australian rugby league player. Whilst he's not stacking pallets, he's not rolling in dosh (he's not struggling either!).

Professional sportsmen, even at the highest levels can only make so much money during their time at the top. Very few go on to genuinely "make it" financially. Most come out well, but I'm sure a lot also "piss it up a wall".

Still remember Lance bombing that massive goal 50m out on the boundary line in the 99 Prelim win over the Bombers deep into the last quarter when the game was on the line and the crowd went nuts went he put it through and then raised both his hands in the air pointing up and looking at the crowd!!

What a day that was and the best Carlton win i have been to in my lifetime and the day was electric and i rate it better than the 95 flag.

Lance may have made some mistakes in his life with gambling etc to get to where he is now but he was a great player for us and this thread shouldn't degenerate into a piss take take and bagging thread of one of our former Captains IMO.

O.P just seems to me like a pot shot at Lance and everyone makes mistakes and learns from it hopefully.

You "kinda overheard him saying to another bloke 'YEA I PISSED IT ALL UP A WALL". You either heard him say it or you didn't.

I sense a bit of attention seeking.

That seems all too convenient for you OP.

Unless of course he says this on the hour, every day, in earshot for anyone to overhear.

I will never understand fascination with a player's personal life during their time in the game, let alone several years out of it.

What is financially to some people can mean having 10 property/Investments. Their people out their that need 10 Million and they still feel they not financially secured.Footy players like Whitnall made a great living with football and most would be not crying poor.Their is the possibility also his just taking a honest job he can do well without using his savings.I wouldn't feel sorry for any ex footballer. The only thing i feel sorry for him is the weight he put on since ending playing.

Yes especially if you follow the way this guy plays his character on a sitcom.

oh yeaaa i'm in it for the attention...look at moi...
sorry for using the word "kinda"
he was actually talking to another bloke that works there who used to be a pro skater for 13years yet sadly blew it all too...it happens...
i didnt post this to bag the bloke...he captained our friggin club...
but do i feel sorrow for him? no? id love to lead the life he did and hopefully i wouldve made better decisions. but hey life goes on...

regards

attention seeker.

Good on him. Working to make a dollar :thumbsu:

But really, most of them who invest their money smartly still work full time jobs. They come out with their 150-200k in savings and investments that supplement their income. After 4 or 5 years on a list you can easily come out with the kind of investments that return around 20k a year. The smart blokes either work a full time job and use their investment return to pay off the mortgage and the young ones play footy in a state league and use it to top up their salaries.

Either Red wanders around telling every person he sees about his financial status or your timing is just so uncanny that a BF poster from the club he played for just happened to pass just as the words came out at the time he just happened to be discussing something he wouldnt usually be talking bout........I smell BS

I am not surprised he would actually be in that financial state (if in fact he is) but that you actually heard him discuss it.........sorry, I dont buy it.

Cool Story Bro.....

Big Red is in sales... works for a packaging company... he aint very good though... he came in drop off his card cause i was out and never heard back from him... i would have been a guaranteed customer too... oh well...

We all know Lance had trouble with his weight and knees towards the end of his career BUT at his best he wore the navy blue guernsey with pride.

He was a champion for the club and will always be welcomed back and I will be the first to buy him a beer if I ever see him in a watering hole.

Whether he makes it huge like Fraser Brown or I see him rattling for pennies in a bum's outfit outside Flinders Street Station it will never take away the fact that he played for my beloved Blues with his heart and soul.

Massive fall from Grace? ... Well at least he got to those heights to begin with!

Everyone makes mistakes, but when you have to read this shite on top of it well it just makes it so much harder.

Taking swipes at past players who did the club wrong, well I am all for that. Anything else is just plain wrong in my book.

I for one wish Lance all the best, if he is happy then I am happy for him.

Nuff said.

I heard from someone who directly dealt with Whitnall that he was a rep for a company.

You shouldn't jump to conclusions.

Whitnall and Christou played for Craigeburn under Barnard.

Lance used to come into my restaurant in cbd quite regularly this year with clients either in a rep role or consulting on something!

He may well have put on weight & faded away early but was a great player at the blues in his day & credit is surely due! At least he had heart & passioon for the club unlike that other ****wit FF we had!

Hear, hear! Was a great player for us! Injury (whether weight-related or not) brought his career to a premature end. Lance has obviously suffered other personal problems in the public spotlight, and at least he might have some normality back in his life now - hopefully some happiness as well. Don't let the passage of time diminish his great feats for CFC.

How is this a fall from grace, let alone a massive one?

Don't care if he's a rep, or packing pallets...guy has a job and best of luck. Of the small percentage of players who do manage a number of years in the game not all are well equipped to set themselves up for ife after football, and some need to resort to making a living like the majority of society.

Strange thread.

Total crappola
IF it was anything we all know it was KFC buckets that did the damage
I don't mind crap threads but for the love of the children so close to Xmas stop the lies. Santa is watching

I've met Lance on a few occasions. Seems a pretty decent bloke. A quiet sort of relaxed bloke with not a heap to say but glad to chat and have a few beers.

He twice rejected my offer of a slab a game to play for my club. Which is fair enough considering the money in country footy and the fact there are a lot of country footy clubs, and not top level country footy clubs paying over $120,000 per year on players alone.
