Yeah like Eddie was the only one. All the Vic teams took it to the AFL, why wouldn't they, every dollar counts these days, welcome to A grade Leigh, what was your president doing while Eddie was doing his job as Collingwood Club president?

Just so you guys can read the article before making a judgement...

Title is...WHY THE LIONS HATE THE PIES

Opening quote is...

BRISBANE has revealed the extent of its deep-seated animosity towards Collingwood, accusing Eddie McGuire of a deliberate attempt to decimate the Lions to exact revenge for consecutive grand final losses.

Classic case of media beat-up. This sort of stuff comes up every time C'wood play Brisbane. If you'll read the article i'm not sure Matthews or Brisbane have actually suggested any of the above. All they said was that if it was an interstate club or a smaller Melbourne club, than that club wouldn't have had the clout or the influence that the Pies do (i'd also disagree that it was only the pies or Eddie have that influence, E'don also a very powerful club in the AFL). Whatever you think of the SC concessions, this is not a having a go at C'wood just more a comment on the power your great club wields.

I think that consession rubbish is so outdated. Melbourne seems to be more expensive to live in than Brisbane. Victorian clubs are recruiting players outside of Victoria who have to relocate. Even for players coming from country areas it costs more.

This is a problem a lot of Bris supporters have...that most complaining about the concessions don't really know what they're about. Brisbane never had a cost-of-living allowance. And also, Brisbane always had the highest percentage (by far) of players drafter from interstate. What we're seeing now is a high number of Qlders drafted this year which is great for the Lions and great for the Vic clubs and great for football!

*edit; oh, and congrats on the win! Continue to defy the critics!

do you HONESTLY think had you not lost to brisbane in 02 and 03 you would care as much?

Please tell me which players you have been unable to 'retain' in Brisbane that have left chasing $$$?

Hang on, we never had our cap concession taken away (as we have none). Now you guys are still whingeing about this, years later, when seemingly no-one has left due to being underpaid... and you can still pay Voss near on a mill to do Sweet FA

So answer the question... with an answer

Actually, who's whinging? And I will answer...nobody! You guys made two grand finals, now please answer the same. How about WC, Port or the Saints? Which players were they unable to retain?

Leigh Matthews

I dont believe we lost anybody either, neither has any other club recently, that I know of, which just goes to show that the extra cap room was an un-needed luxury. Just so happened that you had more cap room than the rest, just so happened that you won 3 flags during that time

Its not an excuse for losing Grand Finals, we could have had you in 2002 (trust me, I have 600 what-ifs :D ), but I think it shows why it was, and is, an unneccessary boost-up

Please ket me know if that makes no sense!

What the hell? That goes to show nothing. And if you want to talk crazy talk...if no club has lost anybody, how has it benefitted the Lions?

Yeah retention concessions to keep players from leaving a tropical paradise.. almost as good as the Sydney cost of living joke

THE REASON YOU LOST THE CONCESSIONS IS BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T USE THE EXTRA TWO THIRDS OF A MILLION RETAINING PLAYERS.. YOU ABUSED THE SYSTEM AND SQUEEZED MORE STARS ONTO THE LIST TO HAVE AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE!!!

It's not about them living in a 'tropical paradise', or it being expensive to live here. It is about them playing in a state away from their family and lifelong friends. Every time we draft a player and pour a fortune into his development, we have to worry that all of that effort in making him a great footballer will amount to nothing because a team from his home state will offer him the same amount of money and the opportunity to go home to his family and friends. It has virtually left us unable to Draft a player from Victoria and if you look at our young blokes, they are predominately from QLD and WA/SA. Obviously it's harder for a guy to get back into WA/SA, each having only 2 teams. Anyway it's a moot point now as it will never be re-instated and the only time it comes up is when the media wishes to beat a rivalry drum (what, two premiership defeats weren't enough? :p).

Good game from your boys anyway, with the young guys you've got coming through there's definitely a reason to be excited. must be the influence of that Brisbane great, Brad Scott ;)
