broadbent is 189cm and high 80s kg.
we have NEVER had a mid of his build
we were prepared to give gray, ebert and boak 3 seasons to build that "tank" or engine as it was always called
and people want to mail him on 20 games in a bad team with.zero leadership support?

our club is_desperate_ for a midfielder who has that build and potential strength.

IF-and yes it is a big if, but IF he develops aerobic fitness to go with his frame and can actually carry the ball instead of just being yet another link man, he could become the best mid we've ever had. certainly what we hoped Salopek was meant to be

Back on topic, WRT Broady, I making an observation about acceleration and top speed, not aerobic fitness as such. Fair point made he's got a different body type than the other mids/flankers I listed. My question was - do we have a habit of turning 'quick' kids into slower mature bodies or do we just not know how to judge that attribute in the first place (first rule of this discussion: Wade is an exception, not a proof point) ? No questioning of Broady's endeavor at the contest or talent - not at all at this early point in his career. Its just that I reckon Chad could catch him and that just doesn't seem right.

Why don't you elaborate and give us your perspective on Broadbent's recent level of progress and his current contributions? If, like Macca, you think that he's doing a good defensive job tagging the opposition, then great - discuss. But if you take offence just to having a 20 game player scrutinised a bit just because he's young and it's early in his career, then that's the top-level of stupidity IMO.

Primus is going all out to back these young players which is terrific for the long-term development of the club. But they have to repay him with really hard work and effort and signs that they are working on their deficiencies. If Broadbent gets games just because he falls into the under-22 category and doesn't respond to the challenge of playing AFL footy at an ever-improving level, he will go exactly the same way of the Chaplins, Salopeks, Carliles and Pearces of this world, who have got to their mid-20s and are nowhere in their careers.

In the next 3-4 weeks, Cassisi, Thomas Moore and Jacobs will all come into this AFL side. Hopefully, Newton will follow soon after. That's up to 5 players coming into the midfield mix. On 2011 performances, Broadbent is one guy who has not consolidated his place in the 22 anywhere near well enough to hold off these potential replacements for him.

Tim Ginever responded spontaneously on radio a week ago when quizzed about what he thought of Broadbent's current form, that he'd like to take him to one side and have a good long talk to him to get him to work harder and seize the moment. Broadbent needs to seize the day and do it now. He looks like someone who doesn't believe in his own ability any more - not taking the game on, not getting involved in the play, not trying to make a difference to the side's fortunes. From that lack of self-belief, we have started to see costly mistakes creep into his game. The classic ones involve the fumbling of the loose ball to allow the opposition to close him down. Then there is the ease with which he is being pushed aside in the constested scrimmages, including once he's taken possession of the ball - instead of holding onto it, he's letting it get knocked out. Finally, there are now the foot clangers, including kicking into the man on the mark and turning it over at HF when we have loose players inside of 50.


Broadbent needs to start by showing the enthusiasm of youth that he had at the end of 2010. Right now, he's playing and looking increasingly like an old man.

If you don't like the criticism of him simba, then bloody well give me reasons why this guy should keep the faith of the coach and the supporters. He's no automatic selection IMO after seven rounds of doing virtually bugger-all. And 15 possessions per game does not cut it in an AFL midfield, when you don't run with the ball and are prone to turning it over.

I do like Broadbent but if he continues to not show any significant improvement he could quickly find himself in plodder territory followed by spud territory.

He just can't seem to break out of the 15-20 disposal bracket and for some reason he's had 6 handballs for the last 5 games!
 
Matty hasn't been as eye catching for me this year, but I haven't lost hope, he'll come good, and I'm glad Matty is backing him in.

Good post.
Just want to draw your attention to the paragraph I bolded. This is the very same problem being suffered by several players on our list right now. Why? Well, if your work team leader or manager continues to show no faith in your ability and makes comments such as ' not in our top 30 players ' there is very little wonder this situation occurs.
Several young promising players on our list have suffered from years of bad management and watching ' gold pass ' holders and ageing past it hacks turn up, do stuff all and get selected each week while they plod around in the SANFL. Not only Broadbent but many others.
You can't undo years of bad management and poor people skills overnight. Broadbent is finally being shown faith and confidence in his ability and will eventually start to believe in himself.
 
He's lifted, which is nice.

If he can push to a 26 possession per game player this season he will be on track to be all we hoped Boak would be.

He needs to run with the ball, carry it, more

IMO will be out best player over the next 5 years, everything Boak, Gray and Hartlett might wish to be, but don't have the physical presence to achieve

If he can turn into a 1.5 goal player too, he will be a top 50 player in the competition
 
Broady took a great step forward this week. Now he has to back it up and give us something to be excited about!

agree, he's not a machine, but its what i see anyway

id like to think its a bit to do with confidence and the way he is played

of all people, IF he can develop anothe 35% up on his aerobic fitness, I see a really solid player for us. he just needs to start running with the ball and delivering into 50 for us

sure, he might not see 50 games and might plod from here, but IF he keeps improving, and developing, loses a few flub kilos and replaces it with more muscle, he could be a terrific player

this one is up to him, and is one of the very few things i am hopeful that can improve down there.

i think of trengove and i see a big fist sending it back into the guts of their forward line
i think of boak and i see a 1-2 handball chain to chad
i think of hartlett and i see a guy who receives but can only run straight before executing a nice kick
i see this guy and he's about the only player since chad in the mid who looks capable of taking a tackle and still retaining it and doing something (actually robbie too, but we know his limitations)

IF he has a blinder one day and recognises what is required and desires to be able to be consistently like that and then works to that, well, who knows

like i say, nice to dream in the meantime
 
According to Rooch his confidence took a big hit when Choco told him he wasn't in our top 30 players. It's only by playing consecutive games (he's up to 17 I think the article stated) that he's started getting self-belief and producing.

To Matty's credit this is what he's trying to do with these young players, give them sustained experience and build them into good AFL players.

You need to watch hartlett a bit more I think. His sidestepping of late has been pretty classy.

I also rather like the look of broadbent when he backs himself to take the game on. He also has very, very clean hands when he is on, and he gets the arms up very well when tackled. I don't actually think he can break tackles that well. I see Matt Thomas as our best at breaking tackles, which is a pretty massive thing to be able to do. I mean **** me, I've seen him get tackled by 2 or 3 players AT ONCE push them off and handball it off to a team mate. For mine, if he can improve the other areas of his game he will become very solid, and possibly a lot more.

Broadbent does look very good though, and if he begin to put together games where he gets the ball as much as he did in the first half against freo, we will be laughing.

If I was told that I wouldn't feel that great about myself, especially when Harding, NAsh, Logan, Thomas were getting games to name a few.

He is gonna come good and good on Matty for showing faith.

From what I could gather, this new stat is measuring how often a player hits a target when they are intending to and incorporates degree of difficulty into the equation .. as opposed to the more generic "% efficiency" stat.

The new stat plugs together a bunch of variables that indicate degree of difficulty of the kick to determine an "Expected Hit Rate" (based on the distance, intent, pressure, target zone, and direction). This is compared to the "Actual Hit Rate" and the result is a + or - number.

Anything that is positive ( a + rating) is better than expected given all of the circumstances surrounding the kick. It seems to be somewhat open to the interpretation of the statistician (how do you measure or categorise "pressure"? being tackled at the time, someone bearing down, dying seconds of a match, coach just told you this could be your last game etc...).

Anyway ... it's an interesting stat.

I'm sure the team of 48 statisticians on the Collingwood payroll have better stats. But the one bloke doing our stats (i think it's Matty's little cousin doing it for a free Mars Bar and a Coke :rolleyes:) would probably welcome this input.
 
i rate Broady... people forget that he is still a kid... just 20yrs old and he has a big body already, is starting to find the ball and is generally a good disposer of the footy, and can drift down and kick a goal. He isnt afraid to get the hard ball and he works hard

Definitely a player of our future

People quickly forget that the kid is only 20 and is essentially a first year player (... has he even played 20 games yet?).

Versatile player with lot of up-side.
 
I'd suggest Broady was the young player to suffer most from the days of the "gold pass".

I know I'm not wrong in saying, that despite his absolute love for the club, Broadbent was ready to leave.

Now that he's being backed in by the coach, I look forward to seeing him develop into the very good player I believe he's capable of being.

IMO he is one year behind where he should be because of that

if you read outliers, sway, freakonimics etc, it shows clubs put all their resources into top draft picks, and dont care much about the lower picks. If he was top 10 pick he'd have been the one playing and Salopek would have been sold off long ago
