ive also heard a bit on here about how we cant wait to have him back and so on..
and while i cant wait to have him back as much as the next person do you think it is
realistic he will come back and play like he did in 07'. We all hope he does but he has
been out for over a season and i worry that perhaps he wont be able to get back to
his form of the all australian year.
Also when he does come back what does this mean for Harry?? back to playing twos
footy for him..=S

I think it means Harry wont have to hold down CHB. In seriousness, Taylor has great potential as a utility. I's be keen to see him tried in a few different spots.

Well i think its been great for him to have this responsibility though and has had a fantastic first year all round really and working with Tommy and Scarlo would have helped him no end. But when Egan does come back and if he does then it would you think push Harry out of the backline barring no injuries and i dont no if he is much more then a solid defender and able to lock down on a great player. To me perhaps dosnt seem like someone with fantastic skills and at times seems a little fumbly when the pressure is on. Obviously he has a bright future i just love the work he has done down back this year :thumbsu:

Sorry can't agree here.

1. His skills are brilliant.
2. "i dont no if he is much more then a solid defender and able to lock down on a great player" - Not 100% sure what you mean on this one, but if you are saying he is not much more than a lock down defender on a great player (ie Riewoldt), then I would say that makes him much more than a 'solid defender'.
3. Not sure if you remember Egan's first year, but he had a terrible case of the fumbles, as bad if not worse than Harry. I expect Taylor to improve much the way Egan did. You don't become an AFL player overnight.

However you are correct about the experience he has gained this year being priceless, will help him no end.

correct on a weekly basis it does make him more then a solid defender in the long run. What i meant was is i cant see him being the attacking 'run out of defence key backman' like a Scarlo or Sam Fisher even if that makes sense. I just think i would love to see him stay in the backline and not get moved around as a fill the gaps type player in reaction to our apparent lack of tall forwards. Maybe i am a bit quick to jump on him about the fumbles your right id just love Harry to stay down back and yes, hopefully in the long run team up with Egan and Mackie..reasonably solid few names there to be around for years to come!!

Hey, can anyone give more information on how to sign up for Scratching Post? Sifted through the list of social clubs but couldn't find it there, even when I searched for it. Cheers guys.

You make some valid points, but under the current game plan, basically none of our guys are 'stay at home' defenders, and I can't see Harry being developed into one given his potentially damaging footskills. I agree with you that I'd much rather see him down back playing as a tall than see him thrown around the forward line, I think we have a number of options to try up forward before Harry.

I actually think he fits pretty closely in the Scarlett/Fisher mould in terms of the role he could and probably will play for the team, but I guess we will find out.

I think the days of the full time stay at home defender are fast disappearing anyway so you probably arent far off the mark and we will see Harry develop in the coming seasons no doubt. With the obvious doubt that has to surround Egan's potetial to return to pre-injury form i think its critical Harry stays down back and we dont mess with him while Matty does hopefully make a successful comeback.

Better not to say here, I agree. But it would be good to have somewhere to post anything slightly sensitive that could give other clubs any edge. Just share it amongst trusted people.

How does it give other clubs the edge knowing how he is progressing

It is not as if he would be training out of sight in Pre-Season if he is going to be back, and then make a shock return in round 1.

If he is selected for a match sides will plan with him in mind, if he isn't they won't.

What has happened to Matthew Egan is an absolute disgrace. Not only has he been completely mismanaged by incompetent medical staffs (surgeons etc.) who have given him poor advice but past precedent was completely ignored. James Hird had a stress fracture in his foot 'pinned' and subsequently missed an entire season of footy.

It is well known that such injuries should not be 'pinned' and rest is all that is required. It is fair to say that had it not been for particular people in the medical profession, Geelong would have had its AA CHB for the entire 2008 season!

I know several people who believe Matty Egan has the grounds to sue those responsible (most likely externally from the club) and that he should find himself a decent lawyer, any lawyer, because it is an open and shut case.

We as Geelong supporters have the right to be absolutely appalled by the way in which Matthew Egan has been handled. Lets hope he can get out on the field in 2009 and recommence his terrific 2007 form!

You are right . GFC has a history of injury mismanagement- particularly fractures etc. I wonder if it is just coincidence or a reflection of its lack of access to better specialists in a provincial town?

I don't think it was a disgrace how they managed him at all. He was doing OK until the orthopedic implants stuffed his foot again. That is really just a complication of his injury and probably couldn't have been avoided. I think we should all keep our opinions to ourselves in this matter as we don't know all the medical facts about his injury and basing thing on heresay and supposition is really the disgrace here.

Yes it could have been avoided by not pinning the foot in the first place (holding the bones APART) and doing the opposite of what they were intended to do. I have it on good authority from many people in the medical industry that the handling of Matthew was totally inappropriate. This includes a former club doctor of an AFL club (other than Geelong). Just let me re-iterate that pinning a foot is mismanagement of this sort of injury, as normally fractured navicular bones are plastered and allowed to rest.

His advice most likely came from a Melbourne based specialist. I'm not blaming the footy club, I'm blaming people externally involved.

I had the exact same injury, and believe me, my doctors didn't pick it up until the 10th week!! They originally thought I had nearly severed some ligaments, however it wasn't until later on that a CT Scan revealed the extent of the injury.

By then the bones had started to heal, keeping off it for another month or so totally healed the breaks (I had two, both the calaneous and navicular). From then on I had to undertake some building of the surrounding ligaments, to keep strength in the joint. Similarly, I undertook a special taping of the joint when playing sport which placed my foot at an angle where it was difficult to do a full eversion injury again.

For those who don't know, most likely Matty sustained an eversion injury, where the foot spins/rolls outward. This is most common with ankle breakages.

I'm totally over it now, has been ages, however post the injury I was running 31-33min 10km efforts, so I think with time Matty will get back to normal.

Yep exactly my point. Rest is the way to heal such an injury. The way the medical professionals ignored the traditional treatment and tried to pin the fracture to get him up for the grand final was never going to work and they knew it. Even though Egan wanted to play, whoever told him that such treatment would give him a chance to play in the Grand Final should have their qualification removed.

german, did you roll your ankle out of the socket?

i rolled mine 14 years ago and had to push it back into place as it was at a right angle. had x-rays and mri's and nothing showed up, but 14 years on it still swells daily.

doesnt seem to have healed well at all.

I think whatyou are all forgetting is that Egan chose to have the procedure (ie the pinning) because it was his best chance of playing in the 2007 GF. He took a risk and it back fired. Hardly the clubs fault in management.

Probly not much, but if someone has info that they get from someone within the club or a relatiun, then we should just be shared with Cats fans only who can be trusted.

Like also injury updates during the year, training reporst and the like.

The question is whether he was given a truely informed choice of treatment. My understanding is that the treatment 'chosen' would not be considered traditional practise. How can he possibly make a decision he knows nothing about? It would seem he was given poor advice (i.e. told that the pinning would give him a chance of playing in the Grand Final) when, in fact, this style of treatment could undermine his playing future. CF, surely you cannot place the blame on Egan, but squarely on those who gave him such an option in the first place.

Also, for the third time, I am not blaming the club, I am blaming those specialists externally involved!

Interesting looking back on this interview. Hope like hell he gets back.
