Re: Bailey does knee

Hawks' Bailey blow

Emerging Hawthorn ruckman Max Bailey is set to miss the entire 2007 season after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee at training at Waverley Park on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old was giving chase during the training session, yet when he was shepherded from the side and collided with a teammate, Bailey twisted his knee, ultimately ending what was to have been his second AFL-listed season.

Bailey was carried off the ground after the incident occurred.

"He's done his ACL of his right knee and he'll have surgery next week - it won't be this week," Hawthorn football manager Mark Evans said.

"Max is an exciting young player and the club was looking forward to seeing him progress in 2007 in ruck support to Robert Campbell and Simon Taylor."As unfortunate as this is for Max, it will give some of the young developing ruckmen an opportunity to play senior football during the year."

Bailey, who played four matches after making his AFL debut in 2006, looms as a vital member of Hawthorn's future plans in its ruck division.

Hawthorn's ruck division now consists of Campbell, Taylor and recent draftee Brent Renouf, while Luke McEntee remains on the club's rookie list for the second successive season.

Re: Bailey does knee

Nothing wrong with NGHAWK's comments. Dont pretend you didnt understand the meaning behind what was said.
He might have been referring to future finals chances but I think you have buckley's and none of making the finals this year.

And I should thank NGHAWK for sending me that PM to remind me to look at his reply.

Who knows, maybe this is just the chance McEntee needs to kickstart a career and increase your depth in the ruck.

Re: Bailey does knee

taylor one last chance now, renouf with a big chance to get into the side

My man Taylor will step up.

I hope Bailey can recover for next season.
Fingers crossed also for Muston, I hope his knee can hold up.

This news has put me in abit of a downer

Re: Bailey does knee

Holy crap. That's probably the worst news that I have heard. Hope that he makes a speedy recovery.:(

Re: Bailey does knee

That is a massive negative for Hawthorn. Was looking forward to watching the big fella playing in the NAB cup........well as a result, when the dream team starts up again, may pay to buy Renoulf at the start of the season. If Taylor or Robbie goes down he will have to step up and get his education early!

Agree, this is terrible timing - especially when you consider our ruck stocks are already terribly thin anyway.

For a kid in only his second pre season this is tragic.

Re: Bailey does knee

there's no hurry to elevate someone off the rookie list in time for the preseason comp or anything - we can give the rookies a couple of months to fight it out, and pick the one who comes up best. from a solely needs-based point of view, you'd have to say that mcentee starts as favourite, but he's no certainty.

Re: Bailey does knee

We'd be unstoppable if we had Wiggins tho..

Fair call Nightwolf, Wiggins is quality..............and just incase, I know you was being sarcastic but wait until the season starts - he will come of age and be a gun. MARK MY WORDS!

yeah, and so will Mark Bolton.
Go back to your Carlton board and sprout that sort of crap.

What a poor call Casper - Return to that poor excuse of a board and pass my regards onto ODN. You would struggle to raise half a brain between the both of you.

Although I agree Wiggins is the best of a bad bunch!

Re: Bailey does knee

eh, its not like the Hawks are going to do anything this year anyway!

Maybe you should follow your own advice;)

Re: Bailey does knee

Max was such a promising player as well! Huge set back in his development as a player and I just hope he has what it takes to keep a spot on the list. Not many players can come back after an injury like this.

Good luck in the future Max.

Re: Bailey does knee

The docs have told Max he may be able to play last couple of games in 2007.

that's likely not to happen - rob campbell was theoretically ready to play in the last few rounds of 2005, and beau muston was thereabouts in the last month of 2006. the club doesn't mind players believing they may be able to get back that year, as it motivates them to do everything right.

however when it comes down to it in july or august, the club is pretty likely to tell max "you're a key part of our long term plans, and the risk/benefit analysis of you jumping in rusty for the last 3 weeks of the year doesn't add up. get yourself plum for 2008, you'll be given many opportunities then."

while i may be wrong, i think the club is going to be very conservative with a talented 20 year old ruckman - we don't want a rehn/primus/darcy type knee injury string to kick off this early in his career.

Re: Bailey does knee

I'm gutted for the guy and for the club. He could have been an important man in the side this year, sharing duties with Robbie. They'll have very different ruck styles due to their physiques, and that would have been a lot for opposition sides to handle. I think the best thing for him to do is to write off this year, take time to get the knee right (we need it to last another 10 years at least!) and come back with increased determination next season.

Good luck Max!

That would be good news if he can. That way he can have a full pre-season under his belt for 2008.

How many other ruck options are there for the Hawks? There's Campbell, Tayler and Renouf are there any more? It's a big year for Robert Campbell and Simon Taylor this year that's for sure. Make or break year for the both of them.

Luke Mcentee is another young ruck.

Re: Bailey does knee

Have they promoted him of the rookie list yet though? It's a very young ruck department though.

no he's still on the rookie list. i'd say there's a 50% chance he'll be elevated in the next 3 months now that this bailey thing has happened.
you're right, it's a very young ruck division - we don't have a ruckman who has played more than 55 games. i'm happy that in the last 2 drafts we've used reasonably high picks on young rucks, but hopefully it doesn't cost us too many wins while our stocks develop. rob campbell is a very important man with spider gone.
