What are your expectations on Max this year and next year?

I'm hoping he can start playing some senior footy towards the end of the year. Anyone know how far off he is and if this year just another development year at Casey ..

I hope they don't rush him. No need to atm with SME looking like he has turned a corner. Gawn could be anything, better off keeping him in the VFL for at least another year. Unless he starts dominating and absolutely deserves selection.

I have high hopes for him. The guy is massive. I stood next to him last year and he made me feel dwarf like. I'm 6 foot 4". Never felt small like that before.

this year is very much a development year at casey, i can see us using him against a team like the bombers who seem to be playing three rucks atm

if he can get 1-3 senior games for the year i would be very happy

next year, hopefully he will push on to 5 or so games

he won't be coming on as a player before he is about 23-25 anyway

I actually think GWS will make a play for him.

Sheedy will probably think it clever recruiting a giant to the giants.

I want to try and fit him into our starting 22 asap, couldn't hurt whacking him into the goal square for a couple of games.

probably could hurt.

what people dont realise is that these 'big guys' arent football players. they have to be taught. like sandilands

What? Don't know how you came to that conclusion, that is a bizarre statement.

You don't go through the TAC Cup system without knowing how to play football a bit.

Gawn played 5ish(?) games for Sandringham in the TAC Cup before he did his knee, and he still won their goal kicking. Looked extremely coordinated In his videos for somebody that is 208cm.

agreed he could hopefully be a chris dawes mould of a player coming out of the goalsquare.. he certainly would be more valuable to us as a full forward than a ruckman.. if he can go down there this year smash a few contests and clunk some marks he will also take a huge amount of pressure off watts

The guy has recurring knee problems and, although I don't know the exact nature of them, I did think most would have been aware of this. I'd say he'll have his workload monitored very closely over then next 2-3 years, increasing gradually, and we might see him up at AFL levels for a couple of games late next year. I'd be incredibly surprised if he played any seniors this year.

You have to understand the amount of stress he places his joints under every single time he runs or jumps, and I'm sure I heard that he was still growing last year! The amount of time it'll take for him to develop the type of strength he'll need to support himself in order to get through a full AFL level game could in all seriousness be 5+ years.

So yeah, don't get your expectations up too high too quickly!

Dawes = 193cm
Gawn = 208cm

???

My hopes for Gawn is that we take our time with him, but he eventually gets becomes just a supreme ruckman like Sandilands.

Yeah I'd be forgetting about Gawn for a while, I'd say he's a few years off even being ready just yet. He isn't an athletic Vickery/Leunburger type from what I gather who seem to come on a little quicker.

I have extremely high hopes for Gawn.

Looks strong in the ruck but he has nice hands and takes good marks.

I remember reading that Gawn played as a midfielder for most of his younger years which would explain his co-ordination (he had somewhat of a growth spurt).

I say get him playing as both a ruck and a forward (couldn't hurt) at VFL then next year, form permiting give him every chance to play in the seniors.

He has a long way to go before getting an AFL game. He is still behind Jamar, Martin and Spencer on the ruck depth chart. I don't see him getting a spot in the forward line either if Petterd and Bate can not get a game while Watts gets a free ride.

He is a good prospect, but if he has recurring knee problems it would be idiotic to rush him. For someone his size, a serious knee, ankle or foot injury could be career ending.

I agree with all of this. I completly forgot about his knee's giving him greif and think he should only be played when he is 100% as well as being in great form. This may not be next year, but If he was up to it I'd like to see him get a game or two just for the experience.

I'm sure the club will be all over his managment. I'd imagin Chris Connoly would be able to help with his development as he would have BIG man expereince working with Sandilands.

He wont be behind Spencer for long....i saw him play recently and even though it was only the one game jeez he looked good, alos liked the look of spencer dont get me wrong but.

Gawn is huge obviously but his skills around the ground are also far better than Spencer who drops marks a bit ect.

When his Knees are good he will ARRIVE, forget age, he is big enough to play maybe a year or two off at this stage but not 25+ like some people are suggesting

i hope going to those lengths to get the heights of both players brings a smile to your face...

ive seen gawny play tac cup and in the 2's he has excellent hands and takes a really strong mark on the lead.. he is better than a donkey ruckman like spencer.. just because there not similar heights doesnt mean they cant play the same role.. gawn could eventually be a dinosaur who leads out of the goalsquare.. good luck spoiling him... just like dawes.. plus gawny could go into the middle.. he was drafted as a potential forward option of that i have no doubt....why else would they have taken him 34 or so
