Just looking around the Melbourne player list and noticed something that tweaked my interest.

GAWN%20Max_draft_246_meeta.jpg

Name: Max Gawn

Number: 37

Height: 208cm

Weight: 104kg

DOB: 28-12-1991

Debut: Yet to debut

I thought **** that's impressive size for a bloke that turned 18 only 3 months ago, he seems to have been using his recovery time from the knee reconstruction extremely well.

Then I saw something else that surprised me.

Name: Mark Jamar

Number: 40

Height: 198cm

Weight: 104kg

DOB: 09-08-1983

Debut: Rd 1 - 2003

It seems as if our new ruckman is stacking on the size rapidly and has caught up to the Russian in terms of weight.

Providing how he recovers from the knee injury and plays at Casey I think we could expect to see young Max play a few games in the second half of the season for the Dees.

He's far ahead physically of most young ruckmen his age I would imagine and seems to be able to put size on no troubles.

He came to the club standing at 206cm and 97kg and over the pre-season he's grown 2cm and added 7kg to his frame.

I'm liking the descriptions of this kid, sounds extremely promising.

The strong-marking, football-smart ruckman models himself on AFL stars Brad Ottens and Kurt Tippett, and is capable of going forward. Missed the 2009 NAB AFL Under-18 championships with a knee injury. Stands a towering 208cm and will be given plenty of time to develop.

Remember though with this draft lacking quality talls, for a guy with such impressive physical stature to be picked up at the start of the third round it indicates he probably isn't a superstar. Although you have to factor in how the injury hampered his chances.

I'm tipping that athletically he is probably pretty challenged. He probably doesn't have the leap and speed of a NicNat. It would be amazing if he did, but really I'm hoping he has a game that can match his strengths - that he can take a mark, can throw his weight around and can win some hitouts. I'm not expecting miracles but a ruckman that can use the ball cleanly and within his limits would be nice as well.

Still has a long way to go in the weight rooms seeing as Sandilands weights 120+ kilograms. However dont think Gawn will ever need to get that big because can see him having more athleticism and pace around the ground than Sandilands.

Also interesting to see that Robbie Warnock is listed at 96 kilo's probably wrong but he will be playing AFL footy this year with still such a light frame.

I think Casey is the way to go for Max play some very solid footy probably progressing through the Casey 2's to develop match fitness and then playing some good footy in the 1's. Wouldnt be totally against giving him a 1 off game grimes style if he is playing solid enough football.

Interesting to see who he models himself on (Ottens and Tippett) would love Max to be able rest at FF and kick 2/3 goals a game.

However i have heard that Max has a long way to go in developing skills and his football is supposively abit of an unco at this stage.

You can't go wrong with a ruck that's strong in the air. Looking at some footage he looks pretty athletic.

Not a bad point.

I tried to find an equivalent of another player already in the system. If you look at say Robert Warnock (who turned 23 in January - just over 3 yrs older than Gawn) who is a similar height at 206cm, he has only played 4 senior games and his weight is listed at 96kg. Gawn is significantly in front in the weight stakes. It doesn't entirely equate to body development but it does seem a significant difference considering he is only 18 as Dez pointed out. He's definitely well poised.

Cox & Sandilands were rookie picks. Gawn will be a star! :D

Hope he becomes more then a taller then usual ruckman, i want him to become a MONSTER, id love to see him throw his weight around, crush rovers under 180cms in his bare hands and taunt opposition ruckman in the leadup to games about how they will soon be GAWN.

A possible future highlight may be running through Hurley or Ryder at some stage in his career and then standing over them repeating "FEE FI FO FUM, I SMELL THE BLOOD OF ESSSENDON"

when will we see him play some footy for Casey? how long is he out with injury?

Any other corkers for us FOOOOTY? Haha. Certainly look forward to Max over coming his injury. Also hoping for a Darren Jolly type development from Spencer..at Melbourne of course.

Dont think it is totally impossible, Spencer can play just needs consistent time without injury. Hoping that we dump PJ and Meeson off our list at the end of this year unless they get over there injuries and play some very good footy. Promote Spencer to the senior list which leaves Jamar, Spencer, Gawn and Martin as our ruckman, not sure Martin will ever be a ruckman though his fear of contact makes me think he will never make it.

Good luck with that :thumbsu:
Time is on his side and there are current AFL ruckman who were thought to be absolute spuds when they first entered lists. Jolly, Cox, Sandilands....

Andrew Embley is on record saying he thought Cox was the funniest recruiting decision he'd ever seen when he first came down to train with them...you just never know..

Ben Cousins also said that he couldn't believe Weagles picked up Cox after watching him train. Biggest unco you'll ever see.

Glen Archer also said similar things about Hamish. Could not believe that Norf used an early pick on an such an unco. Thought his club wasted their pick.

Those boys improved quickly. Spencer still working with raw materials. I think he'll be okay. Obviously won't reach those boys level but a decent AFL ruckman.

Gawn is the good prospect. Great hands, clean grabs. Pretty agile.

s seemed to be scared off by his injury and the fact they just didnt see enough of him play over the past 2 years. I think he only played 4 games last year.

His video surprises in that he looks far more agile and solid than say sandilands - he has a verticle leap as well.

He'll need at least 4 years until we might start evaluating him I would guess though.
