Wait until this kid builds his upper body ... Then gets confidence to really take the game on.

Along with many others I thought Holmes was excellent v Demons.

The comparisons to Kelly are pretty close too in my eyes...and not just the jumper.

a 200 + gamer right in front of us.

I was particularly impressed with his improved foot skills in general play. Needs to work on his goal kicking though,

I've been moderately impressed with him over the course of the year. He's a young fella having a crack, I figured, and would need some more time to develop.

Thursday night changed that view. Max has completely won me over. That was the best game of his career, and more impressive was the fact that is was against quality opposition.

He's emerging before our very eyes and after that performance is a lock in our best-22. He'd have to play consecutive stinkers to get dropped now.

Blows James Kelly away for pace. On the right track to match Kelly for footy nous and hardness.

Dont really see the comparisons with kelly.

holmes has speed and starting to look capable overhead. A better tackler too.

kelly had better poise and agility and a much better kick.

holmes and kelly look similar though and have the same hair cut and number.
For a number of years, Kelly and Sewell were the League's leading tacklers.

Disappointing lack of shimmy comparison Seeds.

Liked his overhead marking last night. I hadnt seen that aspect of his game before.

The interesting thing about Holmes is that when he started he was nervous overhead and very nervous around goal. Now he seems to have worked on those areas and that is a strength.

I think he will continue to improve his game.

I think the ferocity of the Kelly tackles with the arms pinned and player being slung into the ground was the catalyst for a rule being changed to protect the head.

Fair point kelly did have a couple of big tackling seasons. Holmes looks like a potential run down tackler though like rohan with his added pace which was what my point was in reference too.

Agree with everything being said re his game Thurs night

Apart from his possessions and everything else - what i thought was super impressive - was his chase down tackles at top speed - he put enormous pressure on his Melb direct opponents

Thats a great asset to have come the finals

Looks like Kelly gathering and kicking, doesn’t really play like him though. Kelly was much better in the coal face and prolific tackler, he also hit the ground running with an instant impact as a young kid. Holmes is a better runner, maybe better footskills at respective ages but Kelly was pretty decent by foot.

It was interesting to hear Jobe Watson remark during the commentary on Saturday night that Max reminds him of James Kelly. It means a bit more coming from Jobe because he actually played with Jim at Essendon.

Good to know that it's not just a few stray Cats fans who think so!

Despite what another poster in this thread has said, he moves very much like Kelly: the arched back when running is uncannily similar.
