Midfield Reconstruct
Senior coach Ross Lyon says Fremantle will reconstruct its midfield in order to compete with the AFL’s elite and signalled the likes of Matt de Boer andChris Mayne as candidates for a new role.

Fremantle was “obliterated” by West Coast’s midfield in Sunday’s Carlton Mid Derby, losing the inside 50 count 64-30, including just seven entries in the second half.

Lyon said the midfield had struggled for depth this season and admitted it had been the club’s weakness.

We played best in the first half of the derby due to our immense pressure - MDB and Mayne both provide that, but I don't feel that putting Mayne in the middle would do any wonders - he is our leading goal kicker - and from memory he played a small role in the middle on Sunday during the second half and we sucked horribly bad!

Like the idea of Walters coming back in :)

Yep agree. Get some flair from Crozier and Walters up forward and have the hardness and pressure of De Boer and Mayne in the mid. JVB and to a lesser extent Crichton to be back in WAFL.

I really like de Boer in the middle. I think he is trying to get 10-12 people running through there to make up for us being with out Fyfe and Morabito and to allow us to give Barlow, Mundy short bursts until there fitness catches up.

Harves used Mayne in the middle more last year, particularly later. He was OK, but his value as a defensive fwd who has proven he can kick goals has got to see him stay closer to goal. MDB I'm cool with, the guy is an animal for the contest and we need some of that in there. So is Mayne mind you.

What we really need is Lenny Hayes, Dal Santo and say, Montagna type. That might work with Lyon's ideas.

Yeah lets add 2 guys with medium pace/cardio and a turning circle of Fyfe's lorry to the center. Exactly what we need!

Every week I see Mayne struggling to catch a man on the run and multiple times having poor agility. His positioning is usually awful and he can't make it up due to his lack of pace. Same with MDB. At least MDB has a bit of agro about him and can find the pill on his own. I see Mayne being a big blunder in the middle.

Given this he would be no worse than Mundy so why not.

Suggestions then? Instead of whining...

Suggestions then? Instead of whining...

1) Play an open game of high scoring football that lets us kick plenty of goals, slightly more than our opponents. If we lose then we lose and entertain our supporters in the process.
2) Cull the list of anyone associated with the culture of "football coming second" in their professional lives.
3) Recruit players that actually love playing football instead of the money chasers and other deadbeats we seem to attract

Maybe the "bad players" can be manipulated to put an effort together, ala 2006, I'm not sure if it's possible to do this as I don't know many of them on a personal level. But if I was Ross Lyon I would definitely either be trying to work these idiots into a workable state or I'd be saying "you aren't playing anymore , goodbye". This includes Sandi, Pavlich and Mundy who are at the core of the problem. These 3 are the biggest leaders we have at the club and you would struggle to find anyone reasonable that can look at these guys playing and think they want to be out there. Attitude starts from the top and filters down. Look at Griffin when he was subbed off. He was pissed off and wanted to play. Get more of these guys in the team.

I have a feeling that when some of these current players retire we are going to hear about some "things" just like we did in the 2006 era with Black, Farmer, Headland, Gilmore, Schammer, Bell, etc about how shitty our club culture was in 2012. The best thing we can do is just slice off the "cancer" in 2013 and start fresh. The worst thing we can do is pretend everything is alright and in 2018 we will be in the same position we are in now, just with different "leaders".

Mayne is a forward, not a midfielder. MdB is a midfielder, so get him in there. Suban has also shown he is a decent clearance player at centre bounces, but is on the outer and lacking a decent sized tank, so wouldn't be able to play much there anyway.

Shuffling the deck won't make a huge amount of difference IMO, but anything has to be worth a try after this past month of completely shit footy.

Mayne is a HF, he should be rotating through the midfield anyway. Particularly when two of his biggest strengths are defensive pressure and long/hard/fast repeat leads up the ground.

De Boer is a midfielder, he should be in the midfield, or not in the team.

Bring in some natural forwards to fill the gaps. It's all the same shit we were saying last year and throughout the pre-season.

They are 2 pathetic non-quantifiable options. You'll have to do better than that.

Doings thing slike that, at this point wont make a difference. And unless yo'ur inside the club yourself and know this for fact, it's just waffle. Sure you dont work for the West?

I like this...Would love to see sherro, crozier debut, and give Walters a crack too, even if his speed is an issue.
Hell we've copied the saints defensively let's copy them offensively too.

Ballas, crozier and Walters = milera, saad and Milne

Mayne in the middle is a stupid idea. He's our best forward ffs. As a lead up forward, fine. But not in the midfield.

MDB good.

Mayne would be our fastest player on the lead.

Would rather not see Mayne in the midfield as he is currently our best forward. He has been doing well in his current position. I like MDB in the midfield though, he might be the in and under player we need right now. I also thought maybe Suban could be brought into the midfield as a sub. We know he has a terrible tank and he appears to only play one quarter a game so perhaps he can be brought in as a sub and provide some clearances in the middle.

The thing people are forgetting is that we don't have any midfielders to come in that are fit! We do however have a forward or two that can come in (Anthony, Walters, Crozier).

If we want to try and arrest what is happening in the midfield regarding sustained effort and pressure I can't think of two better players to do that than MDB and Mayne.

Sutcliffe has been going well in the WAFL and could be given a go, but yeah, I take your point.

Can't believe that Mora is still 4 or 5 weeks away! How many games has Lenny Hayes played since doing his knee at the same time? We're seriously just not a very good club all round really...

DeBoer, fantastic just give him more than 1 game to prove himself.

Mayne, not a great idea.
Finally starting to prove himself up forward and has been very valueable with both pressure and goals.
Who then replaces his output up forward?

Like MDB for the mid, his natual position IMO. Prefer Mayne stays put, why do we always have to interfer with players playing well in their preferred position.

Debeor: yes, for obvious reasons.
Mayne: no, for obvious reasons.

Electricfeel: I like the idea of suban as a sub for a last quarter clearance player. Maybe at the expense of giving Pearce a rest.

I am baffled as to why MDB hasn't been given more time in midfield both this year and last. He is perfect for a Boyd/Cross (can't remember which), Brad Sewell or Hayes role. Hopefully I'll find out this weekend and he won't suck...

Sh*% I can now seeing how poorly Barlow & mundy have returned with having a limited preseason.I wouldn't be against seeing him return against the doggies over here ,round 15.
