Last year with Watts, Blease, Strauss, Bennell - the message to me was clear, speed and skills. We need guys who can kick and we need guys who can run fast! A mate of mine commented that we were rebuilding Port Adelaide of the early 2000's - Wanganeen, Burgoynes, Pickett, skills and speed across the park.

What if any, is the theme this year?

Trengove and Scully are just such guns that you can put them in any category. But what about Gysberts and Tapscott? They seem to rate highly in skills, but are they in line with the quicker counterparts of last year?

Gawn and Fitzpatrick are interesting. They are clearly to me needs selections. Gawn was rated the best ruckman by us, and whilst we have favoured a tap ruckmen over an athletic one, really we've just selected who we think is the best. Fitzpatrick is more along the speed line, he's got great atheleticism. But I think he was mainly for needs as well, he has the potential to cover the need in the ruck and/or up forward and was too good not to select.

Maybe this year it is all about getting the best footballer. They seem to still rate skills highly, but in terms of speed it might be a slight correction from the year before. I can't wait to see these guys play.

Think its still the same. Tapscott is not quick but is a big unit. Reminds me of Paul Chapman. Very good overhead and goes forward with a deadly foot. Gysberts is a quick and at 188cm is very good size.

I actaully think we are modelling our drafting on Geelong, building a deep and versatile midfield. Players like Enright, Kelly, Chapman etc are and were drafted as midfielders but play on flanks. I simply think we loaded up on the best 4 midfielders available, whilst getting some variety

I do think we should have taken Talia with 11 and Tapscott/Gysberts (I like both, and would have been rapt to get either at 18) but I can understand what we are trying to do.

Two things which I really enjoyed about that story:

1. Schwab listed Sylvia in the middle

2. Schwab seems so enthusiastic about the future of the club. It reminds me of school when I would try and draw up a Melbourne side for the following season when I got bored.

Fantastic stuff on both counts.
