I liked Kenny.

It was his ungainly playing style. The fact that he was at times our only option to play as a tall forward, the fact that he was at times our only option to play as a tall defender, or his resemblence to children book character Grug.

He was a lovable character, who gave it his all for the club. The game was always going to pass him by in 2008. It's quicker now than ever before and that was never exactly a strong suit, but he got the best out of himself. He was a handy bloke to throw at either end of the ground and I feel as though the end of his career not being so flash has seen him unfairly maligned. I'm hoping that history will look upon him better than the rough go he copped this year (I'm not saying it wasn't justified, because I already said the game had passed him by). I will always look back on his career with fondness.

First introduced my girlfriend to AFL a few years ago, she fell in love with Kenny. Sad to hear the news but really, the writing has been on the wall for ages. I'm glad they were able to spin the story so that he "retired" rather than "was cut off half way through his contract".


His last year was embarassing but the fact remains that he has been a very important player for us for a number of years and has played more games for us than all but a very special list of players.


Absolutely got everything out of himself. Was a really nice bloke too, a friend of mine took a class with him and apparently he was just a really nice, genuine bloke who loved playing football.


FiveAA was running rumours that a Melbourne club is interested in him. I wonder if it will eventuate?

There is no free agency in the AFL, in case you hadn't noticed. If the Crows wanted to help him to find another club, they would hang onto him and then trade him to whichever club wanted him for a 6th round pick, much like the King --> St Kilda deal last year.

If the club has deemed that they more than likely wouldnt get a November draft pick for him, they have given Ken the opportunity to obviously negotiate with a club with a view to getting picked up by a club in the pre-season draft.

Let's hope he is still around the club in some sort of capacity as it only seems fitting.

Kenny was a fine player for many years. For a two year period he was a tremendous CHB and kicked brown's arse a number of times.

Hopefully he continues to play for WWT.

McGregor announces retirement


Ken McGregor has decided to retire from AFL Football.

McGregor, who was under contract for season 2009, has come to an agreement with the club in regards to that commitment.

McGregor, 27, joined the club in 1999, playing nine matches in his first year while earning himself an AFL Rising Star nomination. His first game for Adelaide was against Geelong at Football Park on July 4.

In total he played 152 games for Adelaide – playing his 150th against Fremantle in Round Five this year at AAMI Stadium. Only 11 Crows have played more games for the club. He played in the winning 2003 Wizard Cup Grand Final.

Club CEO Steven Trigg said: “Ken has been a committed team player who has always put the club before himself. He intends to play on with Woodville West Torrens in the SANFL and we wish him all the best for the future, both on and off the field.”

That was the only other option really, unless you think the club should continue to keep him listed into next year.

This was the best and most logical decision the club could make right now. And Ken will no doubt be compensated with a tidy separation package and the knowledge that the Crows gave him every chance to extend his career this year.

Ken McGregor will be remembered fondly by me. He was a more than handy player up forward and in defence for several years and played an important role in our best seasons since our last premiership. He was a first choice player both seasons that we finished top 2 and that shouldn't be forgotten.

Yep, well said. In the end he may have lost the pace for the game and not as much talent as others but no one could ever say he didn’t give 100% every time he was on the field.

Kenny would have to be one of the nicest and funniest blokes you would ever meet. People who are willing to laugh at themselves are rare, Ken is one of those people. He would at anytime I saw, stop and have a chat to anyone who wanted to have a chat. All the best in the future Grug!

Firstly let me say that i am a huge fan of Ken and feel that he gave the club 10 years of great service and myself plenty of highlights.

It just upset me the way in which this has unfolded and he deserved better.

But yes you do make a valid point as it is the logical decision to make and as i wanted him resigned last year probably a bit hypocritical by me to say it was handled poorly.

I guess knee-jerk reaction by one sad kenny fan!!

Can't believe Adelaide is cutting him but also that he is retiring at 27.

Man he always had the wood over the Hawks, who found him incredibly tough to man up on. If you found his top 5 games played I'm sure that 3 of them must of been against us.

FORWARD Ken McGregor says Adelaide's decision to invest in youth is correct, even though it cut short his AFL career.

The 27-year-old announced his retirement from the AFL on Tuesday after 152 games with the Crows.

McGregor was selected for just seven matches this season, with Adelaide preferring to develop younger, more mobile, forwards such as Kurt Tippett and Nick Gill.

McGregor saw the writing on the wall for next season, even though he was contracted to play out 2009.

"It has been a tough year for me and I felt it would have been hard to go through the motions and tread water for another year," he said on Tuesday.

"I don't think that was the right thing to do.

"I felt it was time for the club to move on and play younger players which they are going to do and move on with where the club is going."

Adelaide also has two other promising young forwards on the horizon in Taylor Walker and James Sellar, who made his AFL debut this year.

Walker and Sellar are both key forwards, and the Crows also have injury-plagued Trent Hentschel on their books for next year despite the full forward not playing an AFL game since suffering an horrific knee injury in round 21, 2006.

Crows coach Neil Craig on Tuesday praised the manner in which McGregor handled his demotion this year.

"It's a difficult situation for a player to be in," Craig said.

"It would be very easy for a player in any football system or football club to become agitated with that situation.

"To his absolute credit, and if you talk about role models, about character ... we have got the role model sitting here.

"For future years, when other players find themselves in difficult situations in terms of selection, from my perspective, the Kenny McGregor story will be put on the table loud and clear about the way in which people conduct themselves."

Probably my best memory of Kenny has game this year when some mates and I made a 'Kenny McGod' poster for the NAB Cup grand final and he took a picture of it at the Shed afterwards!

Although the elimination final against Hawthorn last year wasn't too bad

Well acording to the rumours we will make at least 6 changes. So McGregor, Bassett are already gone. I am very surprised, very unlike Adelaide to get rid of a player with a year still to go on their contract it is what saved Doughty this season.

Jericho, Campbell will be gone with 2-3 more so it should be interesting to see what happens. I think there needs to be another cut (or two) from the Massie, Shirley, Doughty camp.
