Re: Channel Ten just reported McGregor out.

My opinion is that Ken would have been told that he would play little to no games next year and has had a bite from a Melbourne club, club most probably thought he is worthless as a trade so both side have mutually agreed on a release to allow him to play for another AFL club next year.

Re: Channel Ten just reported McGregor out.

Half an hour later, Channel 7 reported that the deal had not been finalised.

Yes, I heard that.

He's obviously gone and it's just a matter of working out how to pay Kenny out so he is not disadvantaged.

As Stiffy said it could be via some alleged position with the club, or perhaps there is some room in this year's cap to pay him out etc etc.

Kenny deserves to go with respect. He's a 150 game player and up to a couple of years ago was an excellent CHB for us - Jonathan Brown once nominated Kenny as the most difficult CHB opponent that he has stood.

Unfortunately for Kenny the game sped up as he slowed down.

Back in the past there have been some very good games from our Kenny and I thank him for them and wish him well for his future life after footy. :thumbsu:

Re: Channel Ten just reported McGregor out.

If he is delisted and gets picked up in the draft, do we still need to pay out his contract or is that null and void because he has a new club?

Also, any clarification if he has retired, been delisted or is seeking a trade yet?

There is no free agency in the AFL, in case you hadn't noticed. If the Crows wanted to help him to find another club, they would hang onto him and then trade him to whichever club wanted him for a 6th round pick, much like the King --> St Kilda deal last year.

Re: Channel Ten just reported McGregor out.

thank god his gone!!!:D
dont no y we kept him for so long.

hopefully we can pick up someone else that has some promise.

If he doesn't get picked up we have to pay him out.

My understanding is that if he does get picked up, his new club has to give him a new contract, which then makes our contract null and void.

Re: Channel Ten just reported McGregor out.

Kenny deserves better than this.

He loves the AFC, and he's one of the nicest, most genuine blokes you'll ever meet.

That being said, if the rumours about the Bulldogs and Fremantle wanting to trade for him last year, then the Club and Kenny have done him a massive dis-service by trying to do the right (easy) thing.

We should've never kept him if we had no intention of playing him.

I really, really hope someone picks him up and has him play a full season next year, he's not a world beater, but I think he still has something to offer.

Macca - if we were to trade him, it can be arranged between us and his new Club that we pay (for example) half of his contract for the first year; is that correct?

If we trade him rather than delist him, the club he goes to would be looking for a contribution from us IMO. That could range from 0% to 100%.

That would only apply for the year he had left on our contract.

Re: Channel Ten just reported McGregor out.

Does his pay out count towards the salaray cap?

Re: Channel Ten just reported McGregor out.

Kenny would have seen the writing on the wall I reckon. It seems a bit like we didn't want you but didn't want anyone else to have you either ...poor bugger..I liked Ken.:thumbsu:
But I wouldn't mind getting paid for doing nothing !

Re: Channel Ten just reported McGregor out.

IMO after last year's elimination final the club did offer Kenny a new 2 year contract in good faith.

The reason I say this is because Kenny actually started the year in our best 22.

However, we are seeing the game of footy change very quickly and the game has passed Kenny by at a rapid rate.

Reading in between the lines, the club would of told Kenny that his opportunities would be limited, so his options would be to be traded, delisted or to retire.

I'm pretty sure that the scenario you have depicted is very close to what happened.
Those that say the club mistreated Mc. must think that Kenny was offered 2 year contract so the club could shit him off by delisting him the very next year. And, just for the privilege, they were prepared to pay 400-500k$ for it.

agree

no matter the industry,

i find it hard to believe that any parties would enter an agreement with the intension to terminate early

agreements are always established in good faith.

But the same thing could have happened to him at those clubs?

It's speculation we will never know

I have always been a fan, bad luck Kenny you played some great games for us :thumbsu:

It was just strange the entire way it went down; barely played all year, played a couple more, then we sign him up for another two years, and he barely plays again.

It kinda felt like Kenny didn't want to leave, and we didn't want him to leave, so we kept him - regardless of whether that was the right thing for him or us.

Hondo - Obviously speculation, but as I said, it feels like we kept him because the mutual respect and admiration was so strong, and not a lot more.

I'm in no way saying the Club did the wrong thing by Kenny - but I guess I'm saying it seems like in trying to do the right thing, it ended up being the wrong thing.

I'll add my kudos for Kenny. He was a very good CHB a few years ago and has been a loyal and hard working club man. Kenny always had a go and he had my admiration for that.
As to being paid to do nothing...he was there every week training with the squad. At this level of training, it's worth 4 or 5 hundred gs just to put your body through what they endure.
Go well Kenny and thanks for the memories.

Sad to see him go this way, it would have been good to see him go out on his own terms, but things didn't work out that way. He was a very fair player and could take a very decent contested mark. Good luck to Kenny and best wishes for whatever he plans to do in the future

I though Kenny asked to be traded and only re-signed with the club when no one else wanted him (I'm not saying this with any malice, it's what I thought actually took place).

Having said that, he played some wonderful games for us, and did a reasonable job considering he was always being compared to Pavilich.

from what i remember, Freo were the only club interested, but McGregor preferred to stay than move to Perth.

Re: Channel Ten just reported McGregor out.

I love how the club is trying to cover their backside here. We haven't cut him but he as retired. In other words the club tries to dismiss the opinions that he was pushed.

IIRC, if McGregor retires, then he turn his back to the last year of his contract which means the club is not on the hook for the second year of his contract. If this is the case, then it doesn't go into the salary cap.

Whats the bet McGregor gets job at the club for retiring before his contract expired, ala Matthew Robran. IIRC, the Matthew Robran scenario was investigated by the AFC for potential salary cap breach.
Yet somehow they were found clean ;)

Good luck Kenny in any future endeavors:thumbsu:
