I think that the main reason that McManus is still in the team is for his inspiration and leadership particularly due to the loss of Haselby and Headland. Unfortunately he is no longer capable of offering anything to the team onfield and the team would be better served with him retiring and playing another youngster.

Nothing is stopping him from having an off-field role with the team.

If he doesn't retire it appears that the selection committee will keep selecting him too? Macca do what Matt Carr did, the right thing, and retire.

Not sure we need another thread about this, but what kind of inspiration is he providing? What can he teach Palmer, Mayne and Ibbo?

How to fall over nine times out of ten in a contest

How to tackle a player around the neck and give away a free kick

How to get caught holding the ball 20 metres out from goal

That's some inspiration. Ladies and Gents, I give you one of Fremantle's 'Greats'

Exactly. Palmer's hard gut running is what is inspiring, and should push the rest of the team. His fearless attack on the ball and putting his body on the line. Mayne too hasn't shirked any issues.

I agree with all of you - I am dumbfounded as to how he can keep getting a game. I am trying to work out what the reasons are for his regular selection. The only thing I can come up with is leadership and inspiration as there is nothing else left (i.e. no skill, no pace, no pressure).

mcmanus doesn't select himself for the game. have a go at the coaching staff and selection committee who play him every week. its not his fault, he plays like shit and he is supposed to roll over and die?

5 possessions. WOW...! He has a lot of thinking to do on the long trip home. I hope he decides to play one more game. The game has passed him by.

See, campbell, you really have not got a clue...

Why do you say that?
I know he is injured.

BUT he has come out in the media about the culture of the club.
He has been unfit in the past, he has been given a lot of chances with his weight etc.
He has gone missing in matches when you have needed him.

He has been spoken about as trade bait before.

I see...so, we have a team of young kids leading our midfield, with more young kids topping up in the next draft...we have no decent midfielders on the sidelines except for Haselby, who is a clearance machine, and is an inside midfielder...

With Bell possibly going, Josh Carr not setting the world on fire/rumoured to want out, do you think that just possibly an inside midfielder, who can assist these young kids might come in handy?...I mean, how much easier is it for Marc Murphy now Judd is on board...Haselby is not Judd, but he will help Palmer that's for sure, even if it's to take the first tag...

I think you should get something now for him while you can, thats a bonus for u.

Carr is a good player, you should keep him .

I think they tried last year. Had a sad, and realised no-one was going to pay him and stayed. Can't see what is different now.

He slimmed down and apparently trained his heart out in preseason. To be fair to him he needs to be assessed after his recon and see how he performs early next year. So practically he sees his contract out.

Speaking of which, if I was Harvey, I'd make the whole team watch Palmer's game, to show the level of effort required to make it as an AFL footballer.

This is a good call. Hopefully we can build a club around young blokes like this in the future.

Perhaps they can quarantine players like Palmer so they don't become "Fremantled".

Hasleby must stay at the club as he is a gun inside midfielder and the only clearance player that Fremantle really has. Our team has not really had the chance to have the Sandi/Haselby combo working.

Josh Carr has been down on form however it appears that he is getting tagging roles, I am not sure if this is his best fit?

McManus - I am still trying to work out his role ????

is this some kind of joke?

You would get barely anything for Hase yet i reckon he would suddenly set the world on fire in a Vic team while playing the same as he does he. Hase is a GUN who has been tagged almost every game of his career. You talk about how Palmer is a gun, Palmer is a younger version of Hasleby with worse disposals. Their stats at same the time are almost identical.

If hasleby is firing we rarely lose games.

well said:thumbsu:

I think people are fogetting how important Haselby is for our team structure, something we are having great dificutly finding nopw that he's gone. I really can't get over the fact the we lost him so early this season, to think what could have been had he been around the whole season. Throw in Headland in themix and a fit Heath Black and we have that classy delivery we have always wanted, then people like Mundy would just do what he always does and float around with the ball allowing others to get into space and we have a team again.

It's not as bad as it seems but still no easier to take:mad:

I mean people need to take into account that haslbey is playing in a team that struggles with clearances, yet across his career has averaged 5.0 1st possessions and almost 4 clearances a game, which is pretty much equal to Daniel Kerr's stats. Would anyone suggest the Weagles trade Kerr? didn't think so.

That's right, when we hav Hase getting 5, Palmer gettign 4 and Sandi gettign 4 clearences a game (all their repective averages) we are well on our way to improving our centre bounces

Haselby has definitely left a big dent in our team. Many teams have a couple of clearance players - bigger, stronger midfielders that can shrug tackles and dish out the handball - however we only have one - Haselby!

And when he is fit and playing at 100% he can control the middle of the ground. At the moment we only have the youngsters flying the flag trying to get clearances and we have to throw Pav in there from time to time - what a waste of a player that could possibly kick 80-100 goals for us if he was stuck in our forward line full-time!

We need to keep Haselby and do everything possible to recruit another clearance type midfielder. We have a few runners now in the form of Headland, Palmer, Ibbo, Mayne, Schammer etc. We need to get the ball!!!
