This is the first time this year I have watched the Footy Show and something peed me off a bit. Gary Lyon went absolutely foaming at the mouth in excitement talking about the Saints 10 games winning streak. He was really talking it up saying things like "it is really rare" and "a marvelous achievement" Luke Ball seemed a little embarrassed by it really.

Then when he got to our game he mumbled under his breath..."The Cat's are powering on it seems" and was completely unimpressed by our achievement. Why does the media never give us any credit? If we were Essendon or Collingwood they would be calling us the Greatest Team in History. But yet we don't get any respect like that

I think that if by luck we win the flag this year they still turn around and say "Not as good as Brisbane".......ohhhh bloody bustards

As a previous poster said, its all about the tall-poppy syndrome. Just listen to the commentators each week and you can hear the disappointment in their voice when the Cats kick away. Am getting used to it, but still annoying all the same. The Saints are the new glamour team for the media like the Hawks were last year and we were the year b4.

Very true...thumbs up to all that! I work in an anti-cats enviro and love coming in to work every Monday. Media- also responsible for all the swine flue hype that is nothing at all to crow about...

You're not wrong about the bolded part. I find it hilarious that the latest group of people who have decided to have a crack at us on Bay 13 are Melbourne fans.

I wonder if the media looks at it as pretty much this is still kind of Geelong's preseason and we are all just waiting till the month of September. No matter what we do at this time of year it doesn't matter as we can't achieve anything.

Where as for the saints they have just equaled their winning streak and possibly unexpectedly have now raced ahead of the other 14 teams so this is a major thing in their clubs history.

Paranoia rife on this board? Don't agree with the observation at all. Pretty much all I hear from commentators is how good this Geelong side is, with (so far unproven) comparisons with great teams of the past such as Lions, Hawks; how incredible the wining streak is/was; what fantastic footy the team plays; etc, etc. All Australian reps tell a story in themselves.

Truth be told after the 08 GF result some people, including I daresay a few Cat fans, are starting to tire of the constant praise. Thankfully the players are taking it all in their stride and appear to want to keep raising the bar. If Geelong wins the premiership this year I think most people will agree that they are one of the greatest teams ever and that the 08 GF result was an aberration. In any case it is always good media to highlight new challengers, who is on the move, etc. Nothing worse than an air of inevitability if you're in the media.

That is a good point, IMO the players are handling this year superbly thus far. At times they are seemingly "machine like" in their attitude and demeanour both on & off the field.

I didn't see The Footy Show, but will take CF on his word. The 'Tall Poppy Syndrome' is a national pastime in this country. It all goes in cycles. You'll hear the insiders in the media say things like: "This is a great story".....whereby they have either created or latched onto a story, that they can build up over a short or long period of time and then bust down at their convenience. They love to hype up the "rise" and then accentuate the "fall".

You only have to see the thread "Are geelong a great side?" on the main board (the consensus being we aren't). Regardless of the answer, the fact the question is being asked means we're a bloody good side. There's no threads asking the same question for other teams. And I'm quite sure a few teams would fail the "Are ___ any good?" question.

We'd better bloody win this year. And I've gotta say - I'm dissappointed in the hawks, I really want us to beat them in the big one, but it looks like they mightn't make it.

Not much in it. The media have just run out of things to say about us that's all.
Same thing happened with the aussie cricket team to a certain extent.
It's only the fact that thier games go for 30 hours that they are talked about a fair bit. But there was no excitement around "can the top order stand up" It was expected so there was no need to discuss it.

I've posted this elsewhere, but I'm beginning to suspect that St.Kilda are either tiring, or being worked out by opposition sides. In the first 7 rounds they were winning by an average of 58 points (including thumping wins over West Coast and Freo @ Etihad), yet in the last three weeks, in games against Essendon (19 points), Brisbane (16 points) and Melbourne (37 points), the average winning margin has only been 24 points. Not only that, but Essendon won the last three quarters, Melbourne were competitive for a half, and Brisbane were actually leading for most the second half. Our average winning margin against Essendon (64 points), Brisbane (93 points) and Melbourne (43 points) on the other hand has been 67 points.

Looks like cracks are beginning to open in St.Kilda's game plan, and I fully expect us to expose them in Round 14.

I'm not fazed. We've been so good for so long that I reckon the media are getting tired of it. They can't wait until we look wobbly so that they can sink the claws in. Really all we can do is keep the head down, see off the Saints in Rd 14 and hopefully get yet another bogey off our back on the last Sat'dy in September.

i noticed that on the footy show as well and it happens all the time. my gf who is new to the afl thinks there is a conspiracy againt geel but to be honest i think its more of a case that it is unsurprising & its no big deal that we are going 11 strait...
