Fremantle forward Sam Sturt says he wants to stay at the Dockers and has responded to Justin Longmuir

Fremantle forward Sam Sturt says he’s responded to coach Justin Longmuir’s call to increase his intensity while revealing he remains committed to playing for the Dockers.

Sturt became the subject of selection speculation after forward Sam Switkowski copped a two-week suspension for a chicken wing tackle against Collingwood in round 10.

Despite coming off nine goals in his previous three games for Peel Thunder, Longmuir ruled Sturt out from contending for the vacant spot in the forward line mid-week, saying the 22-year-old was “not playing to the intensity we need at the moment”.

Sturt said Longmuir was correct in the assessment as he looked to add to his four AFL games, the last of which came in round four of last season.

“I think it’s the running patterns. So doing all my running patterns with intent, leading with intent, defending with intent,” Sturt said.

“I feel like I’ve responded fairly strongly, but it’s completely fair enough what he was asking.

“The boys are doing well this year, stringing a few good games and hopefully make a push for finals. I’ll just bide my time and just wait and see.”

Sturt is out of contract at the end of the season and with competition for spots in Fremantle’s firing forward line, there is expected to be plenty of interest in his native Victoria.

While the Dandenong Stingrays-product is trying not to focus on a new deal, he does want to add to his nearly four years at Fremantle.

“I’ve tried to keep it out of my mind, so I’ve completely pushed it aside to try to focus on the rest of this year and playing the best footy I can,” Sturt said.

“I’d love to stay at Freo. I love being here, love the club, it’s a great environment we’re in at the moment so I’d love to be here.”

Fremantle’s forward line has been one of their strengths in 2022 given its versatility.

Travis Colyer, Lachie Schultz and Michael Frederick provide the pace as well as ground ball pressure, while Rory Lobb and Matt Taberner are the first choice tall forwards, with Bailey Banfield in form as the third tall.

The return of captain Nat Fyfe and his expected hybrid role as a forward-midfielder is only going to make it harder for Sturt to break into the side.

Yet the 190cm, 81kg forward believes he can slot into any job given to him by the Dockers’ coaching staff.

“I can potentially be a third tall, but I feel like I can play multiple roles,” Sturt said.

“I feel like I’m a pretty good lead-up forward and then also adding to my game a bit of breaking and being a small forward, with defensive intent.

“Just getting to the right spots and then breaking for the kicker on the far side is pretty much what I’m working on at the moment.”

Essendon great Tim Watson has labelled Fremantle’s [PLAYERCARD]Caleb Serong[/PLAYERCARD] one of the AFL’s most underrated midfielders, describing the rising star as a “complete player”.
Serong has gone under the radar in 2022 on the back of the Brownlow Medal form of teammate [PLAYERCARD]Andrew Brayshaw[/PLAYERCARD] as well as the revelation of recruit [PLAYERCARD]Will Brodie[/PLAYERCARD] after he crossed from Gold Coast last year.
The 21-year-old is averaging 26 disposals, six tackles, four inside 50s and five clearances in 11 games this season.
Only Brayshaw and Brodie average more disposals than Serong, a remarkable effort considering he’s just 47 games into his career.

Three-time Essendon premiership player Watson said Serong was the midfielder that “just doesn’t get the credit that he deserves for the way that he plays.”

“He’s as clean as any midfield player that is going around, he’s as smart as any midfield player going around and he plays inside and outside,” Watson told SEN.

“He’s a complete player in my opinion.
“I think he is because people talk about Brayshaw and then they say, ‘oh yeah, then there’s Serong as well’.
“We talk about the best midfielders in the competition and we don’t talk about him. He’s up there in the conversation around effectiveness around the ball.”
Serong said he felt like he was getting better as the season hits the midway point.
“I think as the seasons gone on I’ve felt more comfortable and been able to get into the games a bit more,” Serong told SportFM.
“I’m really enjoying playing with this midfield at the moment. I think each week, obviously with Fyfey coming in at the weekend added another dimension to it that’s really enjoyable and we’re only going to get better from that.
“Playing with Will for the first time this year and then [PLAYERCARD]Blake Acres[/PLAYERCARD] and Aishy ([PLAYERCARD]James Aish[/PLAYERCARD])and Nathan O’Driscoll, we’re all getting used to playing with each other and I feel like we’re starting to get on the same page now.”
Serong confirmed Fyfe told Brayshaw and himself to tell the dual Brownlow medallist where to go during their win over Hawthorn on Saturday.

“He just wanted to slide in, let us tell him where to go and obviously as he keeps playing more, he’ll be running the show again,” Serong said.

“Until he feels comfortable I think he’s happy for us to continue to take charge of things like that and it helped Andy and I specifically step up and take more of a leadership role.”
