Melbourne and Sandringham have decided to part ways at the end of the season. Sandringham have signed a 5 year deal with St Kilda.

It is expected Melbourne will align themselves with the Casey Scorpions next year.

As much as it has been good to be involved with a successful club like Sandy, it has definitely hindered the development of some players.

This is because Sandy more than any other VFL side are about winning above all else, and were much more likely to play VFL listed players who will be there all season in key positions than AFL listed players who might be there for a few weeks.

It will be good to have the ability to play a full forward in the VFL for the first time in years too.

Still hope we can get one last flag with Sandy this year.

Good to hear. Would've been nice to hear that we'd sealed the deal with the Scorpions first before Sandy cut ties with us
I think it's practically a done deal, St Kilda have signed for 5 years with Sandy so Casey will be looking for someone.

However it would have been nice to know how far along the deals with City of Casey and the AFL are. Because we look to have made a commitment now, so we must be hoping to at least get a solid training base set up for the preseason out there. On another note it might be a long off season with not many training updates when they are out that way.

i find it interesting that we are still negotiating with casey... could we be looking at more of a takeover of the casey scorpions rather than just an alignment? which would give is greater influence in who plays in the team where etc? would be good for the development of our players...

W00dy, we did as much with the scorps a season ago. Their coach is a full-time St.Kilda appointment now, which allows us to determine which positions players play etc. I can't see that Melbourne, if they approach the discussions correctly, won't get a similar deal.

Sandy's coach is a full-time member of melbourne's staff, it doesn't help us. All i can say is good luck to st. kilda with sandy as their VFL team, i hope they get more control over them then we did or it could really hurt the club.

If this kind of arrangement occurs it will be a far better outcome than the deal we currently had with Sandringham. We'll have to wait and see.

At the time of our appointment there was a hell of an uproar and, as a consequence from that, a number of former players and officials retired/walked out on Casey. From what i understand St.Kilda now has a much bigger say in player development.

Saints, Demons in VFL affiliate swap

12:13 PM Thu 05 June, 2008

ST KILDA and Melbourne will swap VFL affiliate sides from the 2009 season.

The move was announced by both clubs on Thursday and will see St Kilda partnered with Sandringham, and Melbourne with Casey Scorpions at the conclusion of the 2008 season.

The change is a result of extensive discussions with all parties and the result will secure a long-term future between the various clubs.

St Kilda CEO Archie Fraser said the switch would be beneficial for all parties.

“As discussions progressed it became evident outside of the obvious geographical fit of both clubs that there was much that could be achieved from a football and strategic development for our clubs and members,” Fraser said.

MELBOURNEfc Chairman Paul Gardner said, "MELBOURNEfc has greatly respected our relationship with Sandringham. We have derived a great deal of pleasure from recent successes.

"We have made no secret we are finalising an arrangement to see us in the Casey region and have been talking to the Casey Scorpions for some time now."

the sandy coach does interact with the Melbourne coaching staff, however if I remember correctly Andy Lovell was appointed by Sandringham, not the MFC...

so this would mean he's accountable to Sandringham, not melbourne... If the arrangement is different at Casey and the coach is accountable to the MFC, then that would be more beneficial for us...
