• MELBOURNE football manager Chris Connolly has renewed calls for the abolition of the father-son rule, saying sides such as Geelong were getting an unfair advantage.

Connolly was the senior coach of a Fremantle side that only had Brett Peake as a father-son pick, while the Demons have had only four selections.
While the qualification has been lifted from 50 games to 100, Connolly argued yesterday the rule should be scrapped.
"The draft system is brought in so we aren't compromised, but it is," he told Channel 7's Game Day.
"Here we have Geelong with (Matthew) Scarlett, and (Tom) Hawkins, (Gary) Ablett on the ball, (Mark) Blake knocking it down to him, and Nathan Ablett, who will hopefully come back to football.
"I have brought it up every year since I started (coaching) at Hawthorn. I have been looking for someone to support me for about 10 years and I haven't found anyone, but I am still searching."
Geelong has had 10 father-son picks in its history. Last year it took Adam Donohue - son of Larry - under the AFL's new bidding system.
Collingwood has had 11 father-son picks, with the latest 2007 selection Jaxson Barham. Fremantle and North Melbourne have had one each.

Maybe he could search for answers as to why they are shite.

Maybe he could look into why teams improve when he leaves them, and the teams he is involved in tank.

CC work on something that will make a difference, and stop looking for your face in the press. If you can't recruit don't blame others.

And what a surprise that clubs who haven't had a F/S pick of note (Apart from Luke darcy of course!) are quick to jump on board the 'Let's get rid of the father/son' train.

Maybe if we get rid of priority picks, which Geelong has never availed themselves of either, to make that a level playing field. The father/son is pretty much an even playing field now with the bidding system, so deal with it.

I reckon if Geelong didn't win a flag, few people would even be mentioning that.

1. wce have had their share of pickings (cousins for one)
2. if i supported melb i would not want an offspring of these crap guys playing for us either
3. gfc has played within the rules, so why not penalise drug cheats first, because that is an advantage not all clubs have availed themselves of
4. salary cap breaches, well the dons sooked and no penalty whereas the blues got smashed
5. CC is a sook, failure as a coach, so let him get over it, before he is sacked again

it would be the same to see a whitten kid or a hawkins kid playing for another side, the bullies should have first go at these kids

it adds to the game, otherwise why do you not swap teams every year

as for level playing field, or a fair draft, ho hum, lets talk about tanking

CC should concentrate on saving a season that will see the dees being a disgrace

So you're saying you'd be perfectly happy seeing a little Brad Johnson, Scott West or Chris Grant running around with an opposition team?

Like catsace said, if Geelong didn't win the flag, no-one would give a stuff, just like Eddie McGuire probably wouldn't have given a stuff about Brisbane's salary cap concessions if they didn't beat the Pies in consecutive grand finals. Was funny how we didn't hear anything about it when Brisbane finished last in 1998, or getting bundled out in the second and third weeks of the finals in 1999 and 2000, but win a premiership and everyone has a whinge.

haha, to true. I always notice the amount of opposition fans at matches, just so I can get an indication of how many of ours there is.... Good to see, i believe we had about 35,000 of our own fans there. wouldnt be suprised if every victorian member rocked up

was trying to see how many were leaving and thats why i notice not many in cs that is still sad though did not see many leave they must have been nearly all hawk supportes there
