Here is the make up of our current list, in order of highest draft pick to lowest. Not that draft pick numbers are the ultimate indicator of talent and performance, but it's still an interesting look at how our list has been put together. Players who were recruited from other clubs have their original draft pick number used (ie. John Meesen - pick 8 in 2004 by Adelaide).

#1 - 2008 - Jack Watts
#3 - 2003 - Colin Sylvia
#4 - 2007 - Cale Morton
#5 - 2003 - Brock McLean
#8 - 2004 - John Meesen (Adelaide)
#12 - 2005 - Nathan Jones
#12 - 2006 - James Frawley
#13 - 2004 - Matthew Bate
#14 - 2002 - Daniel Bell
#14 - 2007 - Jack Grimes
#15 - 2004 - Lynden Dunn
#17 - 2008 - Sam Blease
#19 - 1999 - Brad Green
#19 - 2008 - James Strauss
#20 - 1999 - Paul Wheatley
#21 - 2007 - Addam Maric
#24 - 2002 - Paul Johnson (West Coast)
#26 - 2002 - Jared Rivers
#30 - 2006 - Ricky Petterd
#35 - 2008 - Jamie Bennell
#43 - 2004 - Michael Newton
#46 - 2006 - Colin Garland
#50 - 1999 - Matthew Whelan
#51 - 2008 - Neville Jetta
#53 - 2005 - Simon Buckley
#53 - 2007 - Kyle Cheney
#55 - 2001 - Brad Miller
#60 - 2005 - Clint Bartram
#64 - 1999 - Cameron Bruce
#64 - 2008 - Rohan Bail
#66 - 2007 - Tom McNamara
#68 - 1996 - Russell Robertson *

PSD #3 - 2007 - Stefan Martin
PSD #4 - 2002 - Brent Moloney (Geelong)

RKD #3 - 2003 - Aaron Davey
RKD #3 - 2007 - Trent Zomer
RKD #6 - 2001 - Mark Jamar
RKD #19 - 2007 - Austin Wonaeamirri
RKD #26 - 2004 - Matthew Warnock
RKD #35 - 2007 - Jake Spencer
RKD #49 - 2007 - Shane Valenti
RKD #51 - 1996 - James McDOnald

* Robertson was selected in the National Draft in 1996, delisted at the end of 1997, and then re-drafted via the Rookie Draft in 1997.

RKD = Rookie Draft
PSD = Pre Season Draft

I'd be happy if Strauss and Bail turn out as good as Green and Bruce.

I'm not counting Meesen, so we've had 10 first rounders since 2002 which should make up a good part of the team for the next five years. Also to see that none of our first rounders form before 2002 are left. We would have been a much stronger side over the last two years with TJ, Scott Thompson and someone decent lets say Dal Santo instead of Molan on our list. It's all about the future now.

did not know Mcdonald was from the Rookie Draft, what a soldier!

James Frwaley & Daniel Bell arnt the greatest picks IMO. Hapy to be proven wrong. That said Matt Bate needs to have a consistent year in 2009.

I cant believe Adelaide chose Meeson at pick 8, i think that would have to be the worst first round selection in history. Well we have him now... but we didn't give up a first round selection, hahaha.

I raise you Luke Molan.

Meesen has two games on him.

#15 - 2004 - Lynden Dunn

At least 1 of this 6 has to seriously stand up next year because for first-rounders they've all been pretty disapointing IMO (besides Grimesy).

It's a bit hard to call Molan a poor pick, yes he was picked way too high but he at least can blame being one of the unluckiest bastards ever with injury for not playing a game.

On the other hand, Meesen is just a huge spud and only played because Adelaide were out of options. Meesen is a much worse top 10 pick

That's a joke. Grimes was injured all year, so even though you excused him it's stupid that you've even got him on the list. Frawley has only been on our list 2 seasons and as a developing KP defender he's already managed 20 games, that's a positive result for a kid who's barely 20. He's very harshly judged on BF, maybe because of his famous name.

Has everyone forgotten how good Jonesy was in '07, he was one of our only good players that year? Yes he went backwards this year, but that doesn't make his career a total disappointment.

Bate came back from injury this year and play some of his best footy, i think he showed that he could be a really good 3rd tall/HF option. He does need to take the next step and he's maybe not as far along as you'd hope, but he's far from a disappointment.

That leaves only Dunn & Bell. Bell i won't disagree, for where he was picked has not done enough, i'm not sure of his contract is up this year but he'd want to do some big improving in '09. I've heard Bails mention that they want him to improve his fitness and have a go through the middle, so maybe that's what it'll take. Dunn i'm not sure what to think, Obviously Bails doesn't see room for him up forward and i think Bate is a better option then him and they can't both play there. I was impressed by his tagging work & think that he did a better job then Bartram this year. He will need to start doing some damage the other way this year.
