What are the expectations for Steven King at Melbourne will he be a rebuild coach similar to Yze or will he be a coach to turn the club around and bring them back into contention similar to McRae? In my opinion it could go either way and not surprise me as I remember when McRae arrived at Collingwood and the general consensus was that Collingwood's list was cooked and they had several years of rebuilding ahead of them, only for McRae to take Collingwood to within one kick of a grand final berth in 2022 after they had finished 17th in 2021. If you have a look at Melbourne they still have the makings of a decent side and a new coach could do wonders for them especially if he makes the right tweaks as everyone could see they had become very stale under Goodwin, on paper the core of Gawn, Viney, May, Lever, Pickett and Fritsch is very good.

Hmm, the only on paper contribution Steven May is making from now on is whatever he rolls up in his tally hos.

I think they're in for a fall but as falls go, having the pickett cousins running around would still get me to every game if I was a Melbourne fan. I hope they both light it up and they can build around that

I see Melbourne as being in a very similar spot to where Hawthorn was when Sam Mitchell first took over.

A successful premiership winning coach had overstayed his welcome.

In the previous year, they had played a brand of football that was very slow and driven by inside midfielders winning clearances and stoppages.

In the preceding years, the club had also recruited a number of talented young players who were ready to step up to more senior roles.

But standing in the way was a group of older veterans in the twilight of their career.

So the incoming coach moved on some (but not all) of the veterans, traded in some faster players, and gave the young guys more of a go.

With the refreshed list, the new coach introduced a faster game style based on fast ball movement and transition.

See? Very similar situation in many ways.

And I think the expectations at this stage are similar too.

I think this year, Melbourne will surprise some people. Heaven help any team that thinks that they'll pick up an easy four points against Melbourne this season.

Subject to player development, form, and injuries, they should be challenging for the top eight next season.

And then I'd expect them to go deep into September the year after.

They looked good, but they also only beat St Kilda. But I reckon they'll give teams a scare this season.
