prices vary from place to place obviously, but I have heard that Melbourne Uni accommodation is the most expensive, ranging from about $400-$500 a week which is pretty ridiculous for a uni student.

On campus accommodation is that much, regular renting in Carlton is obviously a lot less.

Melbourne Uni has on-campus accommodation now?

Fwiw, it's not hard to find a sharehouse within a few km for $100 or so a week.

Anyhow, I am getting by in a shared house. Between YA and about 10 hours work per week, I am going alright.

The people I feel sorry for are those without YA. I've harped on about it before on this site but, seriously, youth allowance is a joke. There is no way we should be expecting people to afford to live away from home on paid work alone, but with our YA system this is the sad reality for many. :(

BS. you can rent on your own one bed room flat in the burbs for that much if you want. That's just BS.

They complain that it's unaffordable because they want to live walking distance to the bloody uni. Someone should offer them fairly cheap accom out in croydon or something and i bet they say no because they won't want to catch the train and also won't want to miss the social side

I go to Melb Uni (do more hours than most degrees too), live two blocks away, work, and afford everything else. Don't have YA. These guys need to get a job.

Probably Arts students.

Such a annoying bunch. Scream for handouts rather than having to earn to put a roof over their heads. But at the end of the day we better get used to supporting these bums since they will more than likely spend the rest of their years on fortnightly Centrelink payments.

Oh Kevin, why did you cave into these pathetic hippies?

These guys need to get a job.

Maybe the practical demands on their courses proclude them from getting employment, it did for me.

BTW, when I stayed on Campus, it cost me $7000 for 32 weeks (about $31 per day), or all but $42 of my Abstudy allowance as I arranged for them to pay. Thankfully 19 hot meals per week, some basic pay TV, use of a small gym and use of a Computer lab were included.

Now? It's existed since 1872.

They are probabley just preparing for later life, i mean, what can an arts degree provide these smelly hippies with in 5 or 10 years time

I am guessing you did commerce or something similar. ;)

They are still there?

Go and get a job you lazy bastards
Yeah with what looked a few security guards around too.

I know, even worst case scenario that they can't work enough during semester to pay rent, they currently have three to four months off they could be earning enough to put them through an entire semester alone.
