There is nothing i want more "off the field" than to have the most victorian based members again. Hawthorn winning the flag boosted their membership numbers in 2009 currently they stand as follows:

Hawks (as of Dec 21st) = 37,000
Pies (as of Dec 18) = 31,500

If they have more than us thats fair enough, but i was recently told that approx 10,000 (their tassie members) are only 3 game memberships? Has anyone else heard this? If so i think its a bit of a hazed representation of their overal membership numbers on a few fronts, 1 - total revenue isnt has much as what people think, 2 - being only a 3 game membership really doesnt show the commitment other members make in investing in an 18 game membership.

I finally signed up this year after deciding to get to more games and actually become a member....i signed my son up too thommo team 13 he's stoked. Collingwood also have the 3 game membership package so i think that point is moot....what i wonder about is the number of pet memberships the hawks have? lol and do they count toward the membership tally?:D

Our 3 game package doesnt count.

But I believe that the Tasmanian Hawks members have either a 5 game or 7 game membership that does count.

We will have the most "Melbourne Based" Members, of that there is little doubt, whether we will have the most overall is unlikely, as Hawthorn have done a great job going down to Tassie, and are now going to NZ apparently.

Lower clubs like Melbourne, Nth, Western Bulldogs and Port Adelaide should look at Hawthorn as an example, and that risk = reward when it comes to memberships.

Collingwood only count 11 game+ memberships towards the membership tally as far as I know.
The Hawks count everything.
Personally I want all the clubs to have 50,000+ members.
It would be nice to have a fantastically healthy code.

We may reach 4 this year at 50k.

Collingwood, Hawthorn, WCE and Adelaide all likely to be close to or over 50K.

Essendon and Carlton likely to be in the 40's, with Richmond, Melbourne, Fremantle and Geelong all in the 30's.

The "worries" of the league are North and Port Adelaide, both struggle to get 25k members most years, and Nth just had a big "charity" year where dogs, cats and other teams supporters joined in.

Overall the league is very healthy, although the GC and WSYD will reduce our "average" membership numbers.

No other code in Australia is close in regards to club members.

Are they actually 'going' to NZ? I knew they recruited their first int'll rookie from there quite recently, but I wasn't under the impression that in any way they were going to be playing games. Is that happening in the future..?

I think it was more of a "request" to the AFL to make NZ a Hawthorn zone for training camps, and maybe even a NAB Cup game in the short term future.

I don't think for one minute Hawthorn are thinking of playing a home and away game there in the near future, but just that they see it as another avenue to gain members.

In my opinion it's not much worst of a region then Western Sydney, seeing as NZers probably know as much about our game as the people of West Sydney, and that being a very "basic" understanding and knowledge.

As I said above, the "lower" positioned clubs on the membership ladder could learn a thing or two from Hawthorn.

Hi Pies fans.

The AFL decides what memberships are counted.
The general rule in 5 games+ , but there are a few exceptions - our 4 games Tas membership, also the Swans 4 games Homebush membership used to be counted.
The Pies asked for the 3 games ticket to be counted but I am not sure if it is.

We are not playing games in NZ for the time being.

If one of the struggling clubs had got onto NZ it would have been a goldmine.
The NZ local comp is now called the Hawks Cup (or similar) and the national team is the NZ Hawks (playing in a black & white version of our away strip).

Sorry guys but I think people have been misleading you.... Please see below:

Hi,

Just curious as to what memberships actually count towards the membership total.
I want to buy one but want to make sure it counts.
Kind Regards,
wicksy

Good afternoon,

Thank you for your email and enquiry.

Any membership which has a game day component attached to the package is included in the “official” membership tally.
Hope this helps,

Kind regards and have a great Christmas

Yep! thats how it works. If you want to sit your arse down and just watch some football, you have to buy one. Doesnt make you a hawk supporter, just someone who is making sure they get to see 3 games.

Basically, I think only Richmond & Collingwood count members in their membership tally if they are a ticketed member. Ie. seat at a game.

All other clubs include socail club members, pets, aliens etc that do not buy a seat at a game.

The figures between us and Hawthorn are distorted due to this.

This is confirmed three posts above.

This is actually a really cool initiative, both from the AFL and the Hawks. Hope the NZ Hawks are a successful franchise!

...never thought I'd say that...

Collingwood DO count the 3 game memberships.

I can understand the annoyance of fans who like to hear their club is doing well in the membership stakes, but surely what matters at the end of the day is the amount of money being poured into the club coffers.

If a club announces that they have 50,000 members, and 49,000 of them are 5-game memberships, then they won't make as much money as another club with 35,000 members of whom 25,000 are social club members.

it's a good point you make TRS, there was a thread on the main board asking if memberships = $$ which I replied to stating Pies made revenue of $9,582,383.00 from their 46,000 members. I was interested to see what the Hawks made from membership and was interesting they made revenue of $7,361,738.00 from 52,500 members..

all figures can be found on clubs annual financial reports under the revenue section.

I'm sick of dick measuring contest. I am happy that all clubs are doing well on their memberships.

Membership numbers and revenue from memberships are different.

Hawthorn has the most members so far (don't care if it's 4 games or 11 games etc, as long as it is recognised by the AFL as legit).

Collingwood has highest membership revenue. (Collingwood has the highest supporter base).
