Re: 1st 8 Picks Set in Stone - Top 8 Pick Mock

I see it going two ways

1. Jack Watts (Melb)
2. Daniel Rich (West Coast)
3. Nicholas Naitanui (Fremantle)
4. Tyrone Vickery (Port)
5. Hamish Hartlett (Essendon)
6. Michael Hurley (Carlton)
7. Jack Ziebell (Brisbane).
8. Chris Yarran (Richmond)

or

1. Jack Watts (Melb)
2. Daniel Rich (West Coast)
3. Hamish Hartlett (Fremantle)
4. Nicholas Naitanui (Port)
5. Michael Hurley (Essendon)
6. Jack Ziebell (Carlton)
7. Chris Yarran (Brisbane)
8. Tyrone Vickery (Richmond).

In terms of who I want for Essendon it would be Hartlett > Hurley > Ziebell.

Re: 1st 8 Picks Set in Stone - Top 8 Pick Mock

I can see that the top 5 or 6 players mentioned have weaknesses.

Watts - May not grow big enough and strong enough to be a KPP. His best position may be as a utility with bursts in the midfield.
Rich - He and Hurley are the best pure footballers. He has the tools to be a superstar but does he have the desire.
Natanui - Is still learning the game but may end up being a tall midfielder/ruck rover with his athletic gifts.
Hartlett - A silky mover with good skills but may lack a bit of speed.
Hurley - A pure footballer with great defensive instincts. Pace may be a question mark.
Ziebell - He may be end up being the best player in the draft. He could be a special player with his ability to win the ball in the air and on the ground. May lack speed.
Vickery - A tall who can play forward and take a contested mark. Finding the best position may create a quandary.
Trengove - Has the tools to be an athletic rebounding defender. Can his body hold up.

Re: 1st 8 Picks Set in Stone - Top 8 Pick Mock

In my eyes:

1) Melbourne - Jack Watts
2) West Coast - Daniel Rich
3) Fremantle - Tyrone Vickery
4) Port Adelaide - Nic Natanui
5) Essendon - Hamish Hartlett
6) Carlton - Michael Hurley
7) Brisbane - Sam Blease
8) Richmond - Jack Ziebell
9) Collingwood - Chris Yarran
10) North Melb - Jackson Trengove
11) Sydney - Stephen Hill
12) Adelaide - Lewis Johnston
13) St Kilda - Ash Smith
14) Bulldogs - Ayce Cordy
15) Hawthorn - David Zaharakis
16) Geelong - Ryan Schoenmakers

Re: 1st 8 Picks Set in Stone - Top 8 Pick Mock

you would hate to use pick 4 on vickery.
hartlett is a SA boy though.

Vickery is rated very highly.

Port used pick 4 or 5 on Boak and Salopek a few years before that. Home state isnt really a major factor.

I agree port's pick is up in the air

Re: 1st 8 Picks Set in Stone - Top 8 Pick Mock

I'm not convinced Naitanui will go top 3. Everyone was dazzled with his leap at last year's carival, but at this year has worn on he has had some amazing moments for Swans, but rarely played entire games well. For all that he's young, given the relative quality of his opposition that's a concern.

There just seems to be a feeling that he is a gifted athlete, but too far from a certainty to become a top AFL footballer to use a top 3 pick on. Particularly if Watts and Rich go 1 and 2, and Fremantle keep Warnock, I can see Freo having real question marks over whether Nat is the answer to use their first pick on. Depending on Port's needs, I can almost see Nat doing a Palmer and unexpectedly sliding to the back half of the top 10.

Re: 1st 8 Picks Set in Stone - Top 8 Pick Mock

With absolute respect, I do not understand this 'lazy' label that has been applied to Rich.

I've tried hard to spot it in recent weeks, but I really can't. I love the way he plays his footy.
Is he laying tackles at all Sinepari? At the Champs he did this weird thing like he was trying to herd his player one way or the other without committing to the tackle. He really shied away from committing physically (although when the ball was loose he went as hard as anyone). The lack of defensive effort was probably my biggest concern about him.

BTW everyone every year we overrate the forward pocket players who are marginal midfield prospects then they go 15 or so places lower on the day. Yarren definately falls into that category this year and there is no way I can see him going top 10.

Thankyou!
I have been saying for quite some time i think Yarren won't go top10

I like reading different mocks. Alot seem to be the same.
I like your inclusion of Blease there but i dont think Brisbane will pass up Ziebell for him

Re: 1st 8 Picks Set in Stone - Top 8 Pick Mock

I would not have a clue as to what other clubs would be taking (ba the top 3)
But im very torn on the rich/naita pick, would like rich as everyone has seen what a classy midfield can do for a club but would like naita as he would instantly be the clubs new fav son. Both would end up having great careers if injury free.

Lets hope we can package a player and pick 18 for a pick high enough to get naita if he slips. Drinks all round for the recruiting staff if it happens!

Re: 1st 8 Picks Set in Stone - Top 8 Pick Mock

Doubt it.

He would have to nominate firstly, and secondly agree to come over...

Watts will nominate, I'm not 100% sure, but I think you don't really have a choice at where you want to go. If you're drafted to Fremantle then off you go. I'm pretty sure Watts can't say, I will only allow myself to be drafted by a Melbourne based club.

No, but it happens.

Just ask Dangerfield.

Re: 1st 8 Picks Set in Stone - Top 8 Pick Mock

spoke to acollingwood recruiter on the w/e. Said that he would take Natanui 1st time every time if he had 1st pick.
Also said that he thought the 1st 3 were almost locked-
Melb - Watts
WC - Rich
Freo - Natanui

Re: 1st 8 Picks Set in Stone - Top 8 Pick Mock

If Freo retain Warnock I expect them to drfat the next best mid after Rich and WCE will take him. Harvey came out over the weekend and said he is looking to strengthen his midfield with young players. Possibly trade, more likely draft.

Dees: Watts
Eagles: Rich
Freo: Hartlett/Zeibell
Port: Natanui
Bombers: Hurley/Hartlett/Zeibell
carlton: Hurley/Hartlett/ Zeibell

Vickery to go to Richmond, if Lions don't take him. Leigh has gone but he used to love a few ruckman. Lions have 2 recognised ruckman and Clark (Ruck/Forward) Tigers have Simmonds and Pattison?.

Re: 1st 8 Picks Set in Stone - Top 8 Pick Mock

I wouldn't mind Essendon using #5 on Trengove...I saw him last year in the TAC finals and thought he was huge. Smashed Kruezer in the Prelim

Re: 1st 8 Picks Set in Stone - Top 8 Pick Mock

It is funny reading back over the posts from around 1 year ago with regards to this years draft.

It was almost
1. NickNat
2. Rich
3. Hurley
4. Swift
.....................

Move the clock forward

1. Watts
2. Rich
3. NickNat
4. Hartlett
............

Re: 1st 8 Picks Set in Stone - Top 8 Pick Mock

My estimates for top 8 picks

1. Melbourne - Jack Watts
2. West Coast - Dan Rich
3. Freo - Nick Nat
4. Port - Vickery
5. Essendon - Hurley
6. Carlton - Ziebell
7. Brisbane - Trengrove
8. Richmond - Hartlett

Re: 1st 8 Picks Set in Stone - Top 8 Pick Mock

I just love the way so many Carlton fans convince themselves that Hurley will slip though to them. If we can get him, we should. I also think we'd be more likely to take Ziebell than Hartlett if Hurley is gone.

Providing of course, he doesn't run 9.37 seconds for the 20m at the Draft Camp.

Although I have heard we're trying to upgrade our 2nd pick (e.g. pick 23 and Lovett for pick 15 or the like) so we can have a good chance at Trengove ...and I'd be surprised if we took Hurley and Trengove.

I have a slight tendency to agree with you here. Who NEEDS ruckman in the top five?
Dees(they have more holes up forward they need to take care of)
West TANKEagles (no got Cox and Seaby)
Freo (No got Sandi and if Warnock is kept are covered for the next 10yrs)
Port (Need to start looking at long term replacement)
Dons (No have Hille)

If Freo can keep Warnock I would say they will pass on NicNat, they need quality midfielders more. So that leaves Port who might take him. I get the feeling NicNat might end up playing the first few years in the AFL as a key backman AKA Paddy Ryder, he wont have the strength to compete with the Sandi/Hille's of the AFL world and he has questions hanging over his head about being able to read the play so having a forward lead him around might be good for his learning curve.

Re: 1st 8 Picks Set in Stone - Top 8 Pick Mock

If either Ziebell or Hartlett are available to us, then I'll be jumping for joy!!!
Imo, it might go something like this:

1 - Melb - Watts
2 - WCE - Rich
3 - Freo - Naitanui
4 - Port - Hartlett
5 - Ess - Ziebell (obviously bias, hurley is probably coming to us)
6 - Carl - Hurley

Agree with this one,

I think Freo's pick wont really be known till after trade week.

If Warny go's then Natanui it is,

If he dosnt then Hurley could be our man and melbourne will take Nat.
