I posted this on the Richmond board but I feel that it is an issue that also effects the MFC.

We should do more to protect our intersts going forward. Leigh Matthews makes a good point when he says that we should be protected from northern raiders poaching our uncontracted players. But what about priority picks. Surely we should try and do something to make the AFL reconsider. This year could bring us to our knees while a club with no history and no long term supporters is given the cream of the crop. We should do something.

Consider the following:

1. RFC and the MFC will most likely finish with under 5 wins this year but will only recieve pick 4/6 at best and then pick 27/28, 44/45 in the second and third rounds. This is a far cry from the deal Carlton got a couple of years ago when they recieved pick 1, pick 3 and pick 20 just to get them started - and they didn't even finish on the bottom. This draft enabled them to secure Judd and effectively change their club.

2. Our lowly position leaves us vulnerable to losing players who may want to play finals sooner and who are getting tired of playing at a club which has had very little short term success. The lack of quality draft picks coming in will compound the players feelings of a bleak future further increasing the liklihood of players seeking alternative clubs to achieve success.

3. The AFL claims it cannot afford to allow GC17 to fail but what about the survival of the RFC and the MFC. If the RFC/MFC has another lean decade it could be catastrophic.

Surely there is a case for the AFL protecting us from northern raiders and bringing back the priority pick system for clubs who severely under achieve. At the very least they could delay these picks, giving us priority picks (if we urn them) in a future draft.

At any rate I think that if the RFC and the MFC fans/clubs unite on this issue and demand some action we are more likely to protect our clubs than if we sit back and just accept the Gold Coast and West Sydney have a right to the vast majority of the best talent in Australia over the next two years.

Its a bad time to be down the bottom, thats for sure.

But I dont think we should get any 'special treatment',
especially from the AFL, mainly because when we do rise
to become a force - I dont want opposition supporters
rambling on that the AFL have had to help us out anymore
than they already have.

Picks 4-6 could well be as good as pick 1 for all we know.

When you look at the past few drafts and think Selwood at
7 and the likes of Rioli, Rich, even Morabito at 4, I dont think
the AFL can do a lot about changing the order of the picks.

Im not overly concerned if Melbourne lose more than 5 games to
be honest, winning or losing isnt the issue for me, its seeing
improvement in our kids that give me hope that we have the
right players to take us to a flag.

^That's a good post. It's true pick 4 and 6 could net a star but I think it's more in the second and third round that we will be hurt. Normally if we won less than 5 games we would be given a pick at the end of the first round. So the bottom club would get pick 1,17,18. (something like that) 3 picks in the top 20 is a long way off two in the top 30. I'm suggesting that some form of priority pick system be reinstated. Maybe it's a pick at the end of the first round this year. Maybe it's a pick at the end of the first round in 2 years time. I don't know. It just feels like we are getting bent over.

I see where you're coming from, but if we've botched countless draft picks until this point we don't deserve anymore - and continual poor performance means we can't retain our players then bad luck.

Sick of living on handouts on and off field.

We've got all the draft picks that Carlton, Hawthorn and StKilda got. What we make of it is up to us.

I don't know about Richmond, but if we can rally from our poor start and get 6,7,8 or more wins and not be in the bottom 2 this year I think the club will actually be a positive place to be.

Is someone forgetting that Melbourne had picks 1,2 and 17(i think it was 17, could be wrong) last year? I'm thinking that is better than picks 1, 3 and 20. And now you want to be protected from the expansion clubs? Give it a rest

You can thank Terry Wallace for taking the easy option and not coaching for the future.

Bailey is doing his hard yards right now which is why we dont need to whine about more concessions.

Nah shouldn't matter, traditionally the best players have been picks 3-8 IIRC. We'll probs pick up Sam Day....

1, 2, 11 and 18 are the picks we had. Can someone tell me who Gysberts is and why he was selected with pick 11? I know it may seem weird coming from me considering I haven't even seen the kid play but... that's what worries me. As anyone seen him at all? Last I heard he was shit (from someone else who seen him play), not that he won't get better but still... he was pick 11 ffs!

Good luck on that one. Blame the people in charge of our clubs, they voted for it.

What do you want, 30 possessions and dominance on debut in a practice match?

Exactly. Bringing back priority picks for the year will only give Melbourne more incentive to tank. The way it is now they should go out to win every game and at least start developing some confidence for future seasons.

Gysberts looks pretty good to me.

Hes a tall inside/linkup midfielder who has very composed ball handling and is quite physical (good tackler and likes to throw his body in). Personally, he reminds me of Joel Corey.

He was a bit of a surprise but most people still had him in the top 20 of the draft. All early signs and reports from within the club from the preseason are that we're very very happy with this selection. Our recruiting team rated him the 4th best midfielder in the draft behind Scully, Trengove and Martin.

With me being pretty interested in the TAC cup and with Ben Cunnington playing for the falcons last year I got to see him play a fair bit and maybe its because he matured earlier than the others but imo he was a far more complete player than Gysberts, but Gysberts can play and I was secretly hoping he would sneak though to our pick.
You have built up a solid young team here at Melbourne, now all you need to do is get rid of extra baggage (Bailey) and you will have a very good time of it in the not too distant future

I rated Cunnington 4th ahead of Morabito myself. I had Gysberts at 15 in my phantom draft from memory.

I understand that the guys making the decisions at the Dees rated Gysberts ahead of both of them.

Well that took some guts to say:thumbsu:

I was thinking it but thought better for posting it.

On the bright side they can only grab 1 out of contract player and you do get compensation.........eventually, any others they need to trade for and they do have some low picks to trade with as well as 10+ quality 17 yr olds that they can also trade if all parties agree.

The sting is the PSD where they get low picks and the losing club gets nothing.:thumbsd:
