Or we put a trigger for a 3rd year.

Perform well & 3rd year is triggered.
You always need to be careful with how you implement that kind of incentive as there's always a risk of a player behaving in a selfish manner in order to achieve his targets.

How so?

Triggers are usually based on games played, which are in the hands of the selection committee.

If a player is selfish, he probably won't play many games...

Fine.. let's take 5 as the pass mark. I don't agree with it, but I'll work with it for now...

Mackay - R2 (13 votes), R3 (6), R4 (5), R6 (11), R12 (7), R14 (9), R19 (9), R20 (7), R21 (9), R22 (6), EF (11)
** Did not play R8-11 due to injury, R18 dropped

That's 11 of 19 games where he got 5+ votes. He averaged 6.2 votes per game - which is a pass by your criteria.
Is your thorough posting on afc best & fairest voting for the benefit of Barlow...

Honestly, though... do we need him to kick that much? We need him to accumulate, extract, apply tough defensive pressure and just be a POD with his taller body in our midfield. His overall DE is 70%. Better than Rocky and Sloane this year. Sure, many of those disposals would be handballs, but that's his main job - smartly extracting the ball from a contest by handing it to the better kicks in our team.

10:14 isn't too bad and his metres gained per kick isn't disimilar to Gibbs.

Yeah my first member ......it's been quite lonely at the meetings :(

Only because you're so self obsessed that you don't recognise his other fans who are also supportive of him and rate him highly.

well, only if I try to meet you in the middle. Do you not see the point though?

we had 23 players average 5 or more votes per game this year, and 25 players averaged more than your 3 votes a game. So by the standards set by the club we had a very good year, we had an entire team AT LEAST beating their opponents on average throughout the season. By the global standards set by all of our opposition we finished 6th, and when it counted we were a looong way away from winning a flag.

to put it simply our standards aren't good enough. But that should be obvious to anyone who's been with us for the last ten years.

I still can't believe people think Thommo will be playing in the SANFL haha. You guys haven't been paying attention

Noble gone and we've got our first coach going into his second season since Sando. Year 1 is assessment and you couldn't blame him for thinking Thommo's early form would hold up. Hell, even the best judges around here, like Jack is Back , thought his form would hold. But even he was suggesting he not be part of our best 22 by year's end. Year 2 is the correction.

Year 1 - getting a feel for the place & rely on those long timers in the organisation.

After year 1 - Can really make the changes you want with confidence because you have stock of the situation.

Ie. Expect Pyke to be an even stronger influence from now on.

My feeling is that Barlow will end up at the GC
Why? ......they just got Pearce Hanley, and Jarrod Lyons ......Gaz returns, Swallow back on deck finally .....and likely to recruit at least two excellent midfielders in the draft ?

culture and leadership

Gas is a great player however a shit leader IMO and the other players they have recruited don't offer much in terms of leadership

Barlow by all reports is a fantastic leader and a terrific person to have around the club, exactly what GC need to start building a better culture

That maybe correct ......but still IMO where the team sits in premiership calculations will be a powerful draw ......it's why so many have drifted to Hawthorn, and i don't see a difference with the Barlow decision .....Crows are in the window

So when do we find out if we are signing him or if he is heading over to GC to get some sun and a tan?!
Doesn't the DFA 1st period finish on Nov 9th? ......I would imagine by then

When we went to America, I had to make sure I found a sign that was pointing left to Albuquerque, classic!!

Barlow's main pull won't be premiership window, it will be game opportunity and length of contract

I can see GC offering a 3 year deal plus more guaranteed game time

What you've listed is young talent that most of the good clubs can name. Our midfield is clearly behind the best teams, so when the club announces, after missing out on a trade target, that we always planned on going to the draft when we were suddenly gifted with Gibbs interest and then goes for a slower mid with a dodgy kick, then yeah excusing our trade failure because we are going for organic growth, it's just spin.

I've said this a number of times, our trade period was shit in the end.
But Andrew Fagan & Roo both clarified on radio that we wanted to go after an elite mid who was:
1) the right type (inside/outside)
2) wanting/willing to come to SA,
3) available

All this work was done in the months leading up to trade period. Once they released/believed the right player wasn't out there, then they were gonna enter the trade period with pick 13 being used in the draft.
Why use pick 13, a resource our recruiters have proven to be highly valuable, on a player who they believe isn't suitable just for the sake of it.
Once Gibbs came to them, they seriously looked at it and thought they might get lucky.

I don't criticise them for not giving away 2 x 1st rounders for Gibbs, but they should have moved on and tried to improve their draft position.

I agree with getting Barlow. He's not the perfect type of mid we need (thus not worth trading valuable resources for), but to get for a packet of chips, while allowing us to use pick 13 to potentially pick up a 10 yr star wouldn't be a bad result.

I see your Noble and raise you a Campo
