Possibly, but I'm not sure exactly how that part of it is administered.

It wouldn't be odd if contract offers all were reported to the AFL as a matter of procedure, perhaps something managers do. If that's the case, then Freo wouldn't be able to do anything to help him move. If there was a contract on offer, and the AFL knows about it, he unfortunately wouldn't qualify for DFA.
How about a man conversation- "Michael, would you want us to offer you a one year contract, or would you rather have the freedom of a DFA?"

Was disappointed to see Lyons go, but Barlow is a arguably better player and has had a better career. He is the victim of Ross Lyon's list re-set. Not so worried about the organic growth comments, as we intended to pick up Gibbs in the trade period anyway. At 28, he should have a few good seasons in him and will come cheaply. Pick up Barlow, a gun at 13 and D Jars Jnr as a F/S and it hasn't been a horrible off season. I agree with some other threads, we need Menzel, Knight, Hampton and Milera to break into our line up this season, with the wildcard in the pack Greenwood, who could be anything.

Don't forget we will still have pick 43 and 53 get jars for 67, and ROB for 85.
Meaning we need to let Henderson or Grigg go to fit him in. Dear is all but signed.

Interesting developments.

I am a tad torn on this one. On one hand Barlow would add some experience and depth to our midfield. On the other it could be to the detriment of developing some of the younger guys.
Regarding CEY, I have never been sold on him and I don't believe he gives us what we need in the midfield. I have said before if CEY had the endevour and intensity of Charlie Cameron he would be a beast.
I think CEY has made a mistake by not seeking other opportunities away from the AFC. He didn't get the opportunities this year even though his form in the SANFL was very very good, so In my mind what will change that?

I would rather see players like Knight cement a spot, Menzel to be given a run and Wigg to also be given a go. I would love to see a player the size of Greenwood get an opportunity through the middle as well.

I think the thing we lack from our mids is size as in height and bulk and Greenwood gives us that. Barlow gives us that as well.
Cam should have looked around. He seems a quiet type of person and happy in his current environment. I don't think he will be in our plans this year. Some players will jump ahead of him.

Why is Barlow being delisted? Does anyone know and is this something that should be of concern?

If Barlow is signed it would have a significant impact on CEY opportunities
Why? Do you expect Thommo to play most games? And if others are going past him, then others are going past him, regardless of who is picked before him?

Going by Barlow's comments about playing in new colours next year suggests that there is at least one club interested in picking him up.
Did you see that his comment was 'liked' by Rory Laird?

Hes going to be slow as molasses when Freo are contending for a flag - which is at least a couple years off. They have kids like Blakely who will be filling that space.

Other teams simply aren't desperate for that type of player. Top-8 are pretty set in that area and the other teams wouldn't waste time on a 28yo who's had some injuries.

Hes got some good footy left in him. I suppose if its for the right price? He'd be handy. Geeze you would not want to pay much though.

His leadership/character are good.

No I don't expect Thommo to play but I also don't expect Barlow, CEY and M. Crouch to play in the same side

Not sure why he would be delisted
Playing good footy
Midfielders normally hit their peak at 28
Barlow's really only suited to one position on the field and that's in the guts as an extractor. Unfortunately for him, some of Freo's other best, younger midfielders play the same role in Fyfe and Neale (along with some up and comers) which has seen them push him out of that role/trial him in other positions.

There were times this year where he got that friendly role and was able to do what he does best but at Freo there just isn't that need for him, I dare say he wants to go and in turn, they're happy for him to try his luck elsewhere.

Not sure why you would even mention Menzel or Milera. These players were selected to be the cream on the cake at a time Dangerfield / Lyons / Thompson's legs all left the club. Even if they do come on it won't be a significant advantage to the club.

Proof will be in the pudding if they improve the team or not. You need the cream on the cake ;-)

Awful move

Our inside mids are too slow and have average footskills. Barlow brings more of the same.

This off season has been almost as depressing as the Tippett one

If not for the debacle in round 23, we would have finished second. The cake is almost there, just need a few more ingredients.
Round 23 was quite predictable as it resembled the first half of the away leg against the WCE. We need to beat teams like Sydney in the finals which means building a better cake.

We did well no doubt, but we also had a fantastic run with injuries. We may have a good team, but it wasn't tested in that way.

How we'll go if a few injuries hit is still yet to be determined.

He is basically Thommo but a few years younger, however unlike Thommo he can apply defensive pressure. He did really well when given shut down roles this season. I'd love him in but not at the expense of someone with skills and footspeed.

If we get him he MUST play in the guts. His downturn in form was when Ross tried to play him elsewhere. He could be a valuable role player for the right price.
