Round 1: 12 possesions, 3 marks.
Round 2: 11 possesions, 4 marks.
Round 3: 10 possesions, 1 mark.

He started on the bench today while youngsters like VB and Douglas started on the ground. Vince was more impressive than Doughty today, so when Bode comes back next week is there a chance Michael Doughty could be dropped?

Bernie Vince will go out for Mathew Bode.

The young one in M Doughty may find if difficult to keep his sport once Shirley is fit and ready to resume his mantle as the number 1 run with player at the AFC.

Hate to say it but Dogga's spot is in danger. Mind you he did play a tagging role today didn't he? I feel there is a subtle changing of the guard in motion at the AFC and I fear that Dogga, as much as I like the way he goes about his footy, might struggle to get games over the rising youngsters before long.

On the strength of today's game I reckon it's a toss of the coin between Vince and Porplyzia as far as who gets dropped (if you're of the opinion that Dogga's spot is safe for now), as both showed clean hands and did some good things, Vince gathered two more possessions but Porps kicked a goal. Very close call.

If Doughty can consistantly perform as well as he did last season, there will always be a spot for him in our starting 22.

I can see him being squeezed out at some stage when more players are available seeing they couldnt fit Bode into the 1st game and Porplyzia until this one. Playing the likes of Knights and Douglass regularly has added to the pressure on others to keep their spots.

I might sound a bit like Crows98 here, but who cares about last season? Sure he was a very solid performer in 2006, but this is a new season and the youngsters are developing quite nicely. Vince outperformed Doughty today, and when Bode comes in I can’t see why Vince would make way because Doughty is just so out of touch. 33 possesions in 3 weeks is not something that will keep your spot in a side full of emerging talent.

And we don't want to slow the emerging process for the sake of carrying a player like Doughty, young as he may be.

Oh I agree that his form hasn't been encouraging. I believe I mentioned it long before this thread was made. But 3 poor weeks doesn't mean he's lost it. If he manages to recapture last years form, I see no reason why we can't develop youth and have Doughty in the side at the same time. Right now he's probably just about on the edge as you say, but he was brilliant last year, and if he can consistantly play like that again then he WILL keep his place in our side.

He's very tough in the contests, well built so he's handy to have purely as someone to add some physicality around the ground. I like him, love the way he approaches the game but he's gotta pick himself up or the likes of Porplyzia, Vince and co. will take his spot faster than the kid can blink.

When Van Berlo (hope he's not reading this) was being towled up by Peter Burgoyne, Dogga was moved on to him and completely neutralised him. Don't think he'll be going anywhere for a while.

It might have also had something to do with a niggling injury but in any case the young buck was moved on to him in the 2nd quater and apart from a purple patch late in the third quater he didn't do much after that.

Gee. I think some of the reports of Doughty's death are a bit premature.

He played primarily as a tagger today and I think Craigy would have been reassonably happy with the results. His disposal today was immaculate.

Having said that there is a new wave of talented youngsters coming through in the mid-field that will certainly have him twitching a little and looking over his shoulder. Which is a good thing.

And that's what will see him keep his spot in the side and rightly so - he's a hardbody with the desire to use it.

If the moment comes when he reverts to his 2004 Nathan Lonie impersonation then he'll be at severe risk.

That guy hears footsteps in his sleep.

Seriously, is there a bigger squib in the league getting a regular game?

I think this dude invented butter.

I have felt that the first two games Dogga's been struggling however while not setting the world alight today he played his role well. That being said he is certainly one that's on notice. I also wasnt that happy with how Torneys first 2 games went either and boy did he turn it around today.

Good post. I agreed that it is far better to see it as a positive sign of our depth rather than be critical of Doughty. We will eventually have some players to fit back in the team though and if we can get Kenny, Maric and Meese fit, we are going to have some great competition for spots.

Well said. Drummond you are barking up the wrong tree.

you are all a bunch of cowards hiding behind your computer screens! How dare you question Doughty as a person, what you are saying is slanderous and you will be caught and punished ;)

My thoughts exactly. Came on and did his job very well. Kept Burgoyone down to a handfull of kicks in the second half.

Agreed. Not much of the footy but some of his work in traffic was particularly good.

And as for his place in the team, possession is nine tenths of the law. I think it is Shirley that might play an SANFL game this season before Doughty does.

bahahaha. Oh Carl, you're anti-Shirley stance regardless of his performances makes you sound like a fool. He was among the best round 1, handy in round 2....picked up his usual 15-16 disposals, did the grunt work, tackles, shepherds, knock-ons etc. As soon as he is fit he will be straight back in to the 22. :)
