Michael Jackson - Dead

I have listened to many of his songs, but I was never really a big fan and the 'kiddie' controversies of the 2000's harmed him greatly. Nevertheless, he was a fine singer and one of the greatest frontmen of all time.

Coincidentally, Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett and my grandmother have died on the same day.

R.I.P. to all three.

in musical terms Jacko is up there with Lennon and Elvis.

Elvis - Yes as he wasn't that good apart from an amazing voice.

Lennon - Nowhere near his level of musical genius though better at the performing side. MJ wrote a handful of great songs up to Thriller. Post Thriller it's all rather meh.

This is right up there with the death of Elvis and Lennon. Different circumstances but momumental to say the least.

Agree 100%. Music wise, this is right up there with the death of those two. People can say what they want about the mans private life and wacko side, but he was a music legend, his music will never be forgotten and neither will he. Unfourtunately now, I feel he'll be remembered more for the controversies that hindered him in the latter parts of his life. I wish I was old enough to care enough to want to see his concert in 96 now, was hoping to god he'd come to Australia one last time after his UK shows.. and now I'll never have a chance to see him live.

R.I.P Michael. :(:(

I've never been this shocked and saddened at a death of a celebrity before. :(

HTFU....

This is getting more than pathetic.

Not even close.

Jackson was a great performer, but Lennon, Elvis, Stevie Wonder are head and shoulders above the so-called King of Pop.

Maybe today's pop scene would be worth caring about if the musicians involved had half the talent of this great performer.

RIP Michael :(

It is irrelevant really. But if they are head and shoulders above Jacko then they are double that above the rest.

TBH I don't think today is the day for comparing MJ to other musicians. Can't people just pause and think about the contribution he made personally?

Overated artist.

People will say he sold alot of albums as some way to vindicate his talent.

But there's no way any of his songs would make it into a serious greatest songs of all time list.

He's not one of the best song writers ever, he's not one of the best music arrangers ever, all he did was dance to distract people from the rest of the song.

I blame him for garbage tv like so you think you can dance.

very sad news. thats the first thing i will say

he was a talented musician in nearly every way

thing that gets me about him. he pissed it all away just about. just the way acted and his appearance. he turned into one massive weirdo.

he will be missed. but the lasting memory is him being a weirdo

r.i.p michael

This is a very ignorant post.
He didn't just 'turn into a weirdo' and 'piss it all away'.

He basically had no childhood, was a star well before the age of 10 and was abused by his father. It is enough to have an affect mentally on anyone.

i'm not huge into his music although i do like some of stuff and see it as good fun music.

as a person he just led the most public life anyone could ever have and it obviously affected him.

there are well known allegations, and whether they are true or not, his comment that he invites young boys around to share his bed just shows where his mind set at.

a true legend of the music industry. the only person alive in the industry whose death would create this sort of reaction would be paul mccartney and elton john IMO (maybe madonna)....

It's an interesting dilema.

His music had basically been average fair for quite a while now.

It was really only the fact he was a freak that kept people even slightly interested in him.

Which is why while there's lots of media coverage it's not the same as Lennon or Elvis dying in terms of out pouring of grief.

Alot of the noise being made is by the many, many people who didn't like him and are giving him the good riddance send off.

For what it's worth I think if Mick Jagger died it would get a tonne of coverage to.

Not to this magnitude. Jagger wouldn't get the hours of TV coverage that Jacko is getting.

Not sure I agree with the comment: " It was really only the fact he was a freak that kept people even slightly interested in him."
If he retired and just went away his music would resonate strongly regardless

God what a load of shit, honestly.

Poor Michael, his Dad raised him with a firm hand along with the overwhelming majority of children who were born into families on and below the average household income in the mid 20th century.

His father came in through his window when a mask on and scared him when he was young, anyone who went through that would grown up to molest children, surely this is common knowledge?

He's only getting this blanket media coverage because of the fact he's a suspected paedophile and did alot of weird shit in the years that passed once his music waned.

In the long run his weirdness will carry his legend alot further than his music will.

I mean he didn't produce one song that would have him in the same musical breath as say a Lennon with 'Imagine'.

Your opening line can describe your post as well.

Not once did I state that "anyone who went through that would grown up to molest children".
All I said was that it would have a mental affect on anyone. I was responding to the suggestion that he just suddenly went weird.

He had a tough childhood. A lot tougher than the average child would have regardless of income. It was not just the abuse it was also the pressure placed upon him at such a young age. I am not saying that anyone in that situation would turn out the same. I am just saying it would have some detrimental affect on their mental state.

Well then I guess music should cease to exist then. I mean what is the point? No one will ever reach that pinnacle again.

He deserves to be remembered as a true great. I'm not one for comparing different musicians in different era's with different styles, but I do know that he is up there with the very best of them.
