Our midfield was absolutely dominant; our clearances were huge, Boak, Wines, Gray, Ebert had 120 disposals between them.

But I won't be patting Voss on the back anymore than I was witchhunting him after the previous couple weeks. Attributing a win or loss to a line coaches' impact is only barely a step above a dog barking at passing cars

However this is the type of hard at it midfield game that most of us were hoping Voss would bring to Port, because these are the type of games we have always struggled with.

Guilty!

Woof woof.

Not my finest moment but good damn there were some worrying signs that seemingly pointed at Voss.

Yup Today I reckon Kenny got them in at Quarter time and said:

"Guys something's not working this year and is getting worse....

I want you's to forget everything Voss has taught you , free your minds of that shit and go back to playing and spreading like last year"

....and then presto ... We go off...

I'm actually not sure if I'm joking or not....

Maybe our midfield improved during today's game because Ken finally threw his hands up and said "Vossy, my ideas aren't working, I'm going to finally listen to you and try your ideas"

It's as possible as most of what has been written here. None of us are involved in anything the coaches do so just mindlessly blaming Voss is pointless

This is magical.

Michael Voss has been blamed for all manner of sins of the world for some time. Does he now get some credit for the development of Hamish Hartlett's contested game, the development of Sam Gray and the rise and rise of Brendon Ah Chee?

I would have thought it was unlikely but Shaun Hart has said Michael Voss isn't interested in the Essendon job and will stay at Port. Interestingly Hart raises the continued improvement of Ah Chee and rise of Sam Gray as examples of Voss getting to grips with his role.

Voss staying
Voss is stepping out of the strategic shadow left by the late Phil Walsh at Alberton, with Hart praising the former Brisbane’s boss’ work with young midfielders Brendon Ah Chee and Sam Gray.
“He has certainly made some great steps forward with the group and with his coaching,” said Hart of Voss.
v1

“It always takes time at a new place, bringing and fitting in with new ideas. He is really finding a good space to operate in and coach the midfield really well.”

I don't buy it and I am still disgusted with our midfield's ability to split the contest and defend. While he probably assisted with the development of those two, our rapid fall from grace in the midfield this year is too much to ignore with one positive article. I understand we're doing this whole Geelong based "concede the clearance and slingshot" dealio, but the midfield has been so far down on their high water mark it's not good.

Lobbe hurts, because last year he was basically that big bodied mid helping Ollie block, tackle and knock some bodies around. Other than Lobbe's downfall I see no reason for the (at times) ineptitude of our whole midfield.

Please explain then if we are conceding the clearances like Geelong (18th in comp), then why are we winning so many clearances? We are 3rd in the comp for clearances so this thought of us deliberately conceding clearances is a myth. I'm happy for Voss to take credit for Gray and Arch's seasons and developing them nicely but at the same time Young and Moore have not improved at all. Bring on a fresh and hungry pafc in 2016!

Any mention of Carr staying on? I'm really hoping Bassett slips into that role.

According to official AFL stats Port Adelaide is

3rd in average clearances
5th in average centre clearances
2nd in average stoppages
3rd in average tackles (where you would think the rolling midfield would be responsible for the largest proportion)

And that's despite Lobbe's average year. So what is this rapid fall from grace in midfield exactly based on?

Our problem has been far greater in giving the ball up after the hard work has been done.

I noticed the comment 'If' Voss is responsible, it's funny how the disclaimer is never mentioned when he is attacked for being a problem and that has gone on ever since this season has soured.

By the way Shaun Hart, you forgot to mention Hartlett's improved hardness as a mid. ;)

It's not about the clearances you win, it's about how many you win Vs how many the opposition win. See this stat:

http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_team_rankings?year=2015&type=DA&sby=29&advv=Y

We are now ranked 12th in clearances. That's including a climb from being the 15th ranked clearance side just a few weeks ago.

We remain in the top couple in pure numbers because our games possess the most stoppages, hence why it is important to acknowledge our total V the opposition, and the fact we are poor in this area.
