Discussions about a mid season trade seem to be on the cards with the media. Think this is a dreadful idea for the clubs, especially the ones competing for a flag.

Can see this being a strategic tactic for clubs to go after even the crappest players from the best team/s just to try and get a huge tactical insight into their game plans and blueprints going into September.

How would the Geelong fans feel if we looked premiership favourites, then our main competitor went and dangled a carrot in front of horlin smith and he took it, then blurred out our whole blueprint, which cost us a grand final.

Just imagine the feeling and injustice in that.

Teams should only be allowed to do this at seasons end, or for a mid year to be about VFL recruits.

I can see a full blown tactical blood war for information instead of it being about player needs.

Keep it until off season.

I think there would be more of an issue for the individual/team focus leading up to the finals having to play out the drama of essentially another trade week/period. I don’t think tactical “secrets” being leaked could be an issue, as most team would have a fair idea of teams tactically by mid year.

Not a fan.

Dont need it - let them play out the year IMO.

ITs not ****ing baseball or NBA where yo uhave trade deadlines mid season etc.

Leave it alone.

Would much prefer loans to trades if it was mid season.

Have your good youth develop at clubs who will actually not want to bottom out and hope they can still get in.

I like the idea... it should give bottom sides that look like losing players with FA an option the option to trade them and get max value from a trade while a club is in contention. The Ablett situation may well have tempted Geelong to get him to the club earlier and pay more. Its not like its never been in afl (vfl) as it was in play as an option in the early 80's. I dislike this on going saga every year of players have to fend off the media ..much prefer to have the "option" of the bandaid.... but one has to remember option doesn't mean one has to participate. If a player is contracted an in year it should give the clubs a bit more say in getting value for the player.

Leasing out players has been done as well... probably would take some time for supporters to be comfortable with this.

terrible idea

teams have enough players on the list, no need to complicate things

Initially thought it was a good idea but can see many issues making it problematic.
I would like to see a veterans league where recently retired or cut players still get to strut their stuff with a few 'super teams' for a few more years.( not the stage managed EJWhitten stuff)
Might actually resemble real footy, with skills to the fore..Throw in an IPL style auction. might fill the off season void.

I don't mind it and should help both teams in finals to add to their list and lower clubs to get some more picks but I think a better idea would be to increase list sizes. If you added another few spots to all lists it should eliminate the need for mid season trades as you'd be able to carry more of the same type of player e.g rucks. It would also allow teams to hold onto veterans longer and take some risks drafting and holding onto players with injuries.

Even putting aside the asinine notion that players are some kind of would-be Edward Snowden, why would Geelong be dumb enough to trade out a depth player like Horlin-Smith to a possible flag rival mid-season?

If they cut health/education/pensions and the co-operate tax rate whilst increasing taxes on PAYG incomes under 80k. Then I can see all the AFL clubs affording to do this. But that doesn't mean they necessarily should have to pay for it either.

I can remember years ago - John Scarlet ( Mathews father ) mid season was " leased" ( that was the actual term used at the time ) to South Melb

This would be more about top teams going after immediate improvement.

Along the lines of Port Adelaide trying to get Rockliff off the lions which might have pushed them top 4 and into flag contention.

Not sure how successful it would be in practice though, the new players coming in would have next to no idea what the systems a club has.

But the club the player comes from must agree to the trade. So a Geelong would want a player in return for swapping GHS.

You wouldn't just hand a player over, knowing that they could undo your game plan, without something or someone good in return.

And the player you get in return, especially if it's from an equivalent contender, could also spill secrets.

It's a nil all draw when it comes to sharing tactical secrets, but getting the right player in the team could actually be a premiership winning move.

Anyway, Good luck stopping the four headed monster midfield of Geelong.

"What's the secret George?"

"Zac taps it to Sel who feeds it to Gary or Duncan, who precision kick it to Danger in the goal square".

Good luck stopping that.

Unless it’s highly restrictive (eg only 1 mid year trade-in per 3 years or something, games played cut off etc) then I’m not a fan.
Not from any tactical issues, I just don’t see the point and don’t understand why we have a constant want to turn our sport into another crappy money driven American “sport”.

Not a fan at all, it happened when I was a kid and fans hated it. Clubs who are in contention rob clubs who are struggling of their better young players.

Did read an article a while back (few months) stating the primary concern of club officials was the risk of intellectual property- which is referring to gameplans.

Guess you can always simply refuse to engage in any swaps of your players if You are in premiership contention, which I feel most would do given the risk of a contender being handed your blueprint in depth. Very different story when your referring to after the season as it al changes quite a bit in the off season.

I would hope the club simply refuses, as technically they would still be contracted till the years end in every circumstance. And we go after other contenders players with a draft pick. Use it to our advantage at the pointy end.

Then if you’re down the bottom of the ladder, it really has no benefit whatsoever really.

What is asinine about the idea that a player would understand and know his own teams game plan better than an outside club? He has to know it inside out to execute it.

This is a snippet from an AFL website article in November to show you how asinine it is.

“Previously clubs have been largely against the idea of the chance to reshape their list mid-year, citing intellectual property concerns if a player leaves one club for another. “

Quite an asinine stupid comment yourself jester.

Don't like it either. The only way I'd like to see it is if you could only draft from a
Non-AFL aligned VFL team.
Would make those teams a bit stronger and keep the VFL comp a bit more fair and even.

I can see it actually being a great opportunity for VFL players to get a go who might otherwise not get drafted on the official nights. The ability to give them mini contracts till the end of the year to see how they perform.

Win win for both parties, while encouraging more risk for mature aged players.
