not a huge fan of jazz music but for anyone who is ,can you tell me what made him so great, recommend any works of miles davis to listen to

Miles had a career spanning 40 odd years.

His work spans three main periods (i'm simplifying a little). Bebop, Modal Jazz (had to look that up - I call it romantic jazz for some reason) and Fusion.

I love pretty much everything he ever did but if I had to recommend 3 albums to get you started.

Somethin' else (actually technically a Cannonball Adderley album) - Bebop

Kinda of Blue - Modal

Bitches Brew - Fusion

Enjoy

What he said.

Three great albums there to start with.

Even his jazz fusion jam at the Isle Of Wight Festival is brilliant,

Dig out as much Miles as you can.

I love Miles Smiles and In A Silent Way.

There's tons more Miles classics.

When somebody has so many albums and so many of them are considered classics, there will be a few different ides on his best work.

A Kind of Blue stands out.

Funnily enough, I don't like Bitches Brew that much. I never put it on anymore. I just don't enjoy jazz fusion much.

In a Silent Way is brilliant.

I love Sketches of Spain ans also Porgy and Bess which show a different side to Miles' work. They are both orchestral style of jazz which means I guess that classical fans may enjoy it.

Sketches of Spain really is superb, probably my second fav. behind Kind of Blue.

Love it!

In a Silent Way is brilliant.

I have listened to it more often recently compared to Bitches Brew also.

My girlfriend (your typical commercial radio listener) finds Bitches Brew creepy but will put on In a Silent Way when she's studying.

To be fair, she's probably got a point. Take the start of this track, for example - you won't find better creeping music!

I am angry i never listened to jazz until 3-4 years ago!
I missed out on so much. my life is richer after discovering it.

For anybody getting into jazz, it is worth visiting the bf jazz thread on the music board.

I love jazz and have hundreds of jazz CDs and regularly go to jazz clubs. Yet I found that I have spent more time on that thread than any listening to the clips on there and taking in people's opinions.

I bought Mingus Ah Hum as a result of that thread and last week bought 2 Jimmy Smith CDs. Swinging and cool !!!

If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis

Betty Mabry Davis can be thanked for Bitches Brew. As someone quoted- Betty could rightfully have:THIS ASS INVENTED FUSION tattooed across her ass.

Miles Davis was a new man after the short and sweet relationship that, among other things, introduced him to the music of Sly Stone & Hendrix.

Bitches Brew and Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud (a soundtrack/score) are my favourites but generally i like his middle to later stuff, not that i've heard more than a few albums overall

The classics have been already mentioned but of his studio albums Nefertiti is one that I like a lot that never gets mentioned. I love the live albums from around the late 60s period: Dark Magus, Aghartha, Pangaea, The Complete Cellar Door Sessions.

As for his fusion stuff,I love A Tribute To Jack Johnson and Live Evil.

The Isle Of Wight concert is brilliant.

Bitches Brew and other tracks jammed live.

On dvd and cd.

Some good stuff there IanG thanks.

He has such a large catalogue with varied styles of jazz a bit like the great Frank Zappa and his influence on music.

Really like his modal stuff, not such a fan of earlier and later works.

Close second behind Coltrane as my favourite jazz artist.

The Complete Cellar Door Sessions are what Live Evil was culled from. The Cellar Door Sessions are essential Miles Davis IMHO.

BLOWN-A-****ING-WAY.

Words don't do this music justice!
