Miller - Needs to be made a CHB

Tall, strong and has the aerobic capacity to run with the likes of the Clokes, Pavlichs and Browns.

Frawley is our best hope of holding down a FB possie long term if he bulks up a bit, hes tall and very quick.

Let Rivers play the loose man role that Milburn plays so well at Geelong.

They need to be the first three names down on the teamsheet with regards to our backline, the other three can be anyone of a lottery of youngsters (CJ, Bartram, Buckley, Bode etc.)

In regards to our forward line, Newton will be a long-term FF, with Bate or Garland to hold down CHF or vice versa. That isn't the worry IMO.

All great teams are built from the back.

Understand completely where you're coming from but it's going to be a difficult process I reckon. He has all the physical attributes but CHB is very much a thinking mans position and Miller doesn't necessarily have both ores in the water when it comes to smarts on the footy field. However I don't doubt that he can turn it around, will be interesting to see how Bailey works with him

with rivers in the back line even chopper carrol was almost all australian, rivers loose is a definate, and i like miller at chb rivers makes every one in the back line look good, with help of corageous players like wheels and bartram around them you could convince andybody carrol, frawley, miller are more than adequate!

It would be ideal if Miller could develop into a centre half back, but despite his physical attributes, he hasn't yet showed the ability to hold down that position regularly. We can hope all we want, but the odds aren't very good.

Miller would get eaten alive by the running CHF's..... Reiwalt, Pav, Franklin, Cloke, Waite, Hansen, Lucas, O'Keffe. He's not a smart mover.
I think he could play a role given the right match up on some of the lesser forwards that generally play closer to the goal square: Tredrae(I could take him now days), Hall(sometimes), Lynch(maybe), the Petrie dish, Perrie, Roughhead, Whitnall(if he gets a gig), Rocca, Mooney..... those types.
The best ones (JB, Fev) would kill him every time, although I guess they kill everyone.

Personally, I would have Miller coming off the bench for Sandy's reserves, working on some oranges for the boys at halftime, that sort of thing.

Agree with the forward line thinking. Newton at FF(switching with Neitz), I like Bate as a roaming CHF. I have not seen enough of Garland to comment.

I'm very much in the CHF camp where Miller's concerned. People seem to forget just how good Miller was at CHF before his confidence was destroyed by Daniher's misguided attempt to turn him into a defender. He has played a couple of good games in defence, but he has generally struggle there.

As soon as Riley persisted with Miller in defence it was clear he wasn't the man to coach Melbourne. I'll be very disappointed in Bailey if he does the same.

Yep, agree. For some players you have to keep it simple and once Miller's confidence was shot the last thing he needed was to be moved to a position that he never felt comfortable in (IMO).

The key is to get a player to play to their strengths and not to put them out there where they can be hung out to dry. If we genuinely have better options through out the year at CHF than Miller then he is in trouble I think and the only reason you would put him at CHB is at a very last resort. So far trying to mould him as a CHB has not worked for Miller (IMO) or the team unfortunately apart from one or two games where he stood his ground this year.

It will be interesting to see if Dean Bailey will play Miller to the advantage of the team or to the advantage of Brad Miller because they may be two different things.

bartram class you forgot Bell in that backline but I do agree that he needs to be played as a CHB. Baily, who is a defensive coach, should work with him andi believe he could be a good asset at CHB. Unfortunately for him, Bate has probably overtaken him as the lead up CHF.
My plan of attack would be for Bailey to work like hell to mould him into a CHB over summer, play him there for the first half of the season.... if it doesn't work then back to CHF for the whole second half of the season. If both dont work then bye bye.
I know i will cop the 'leave him in one position' crap but this gives him 11 matches in the one position.
And as for those who said play Rivers as a CHB, that is a last resort as far as I'm concerned. He needs to play third man up role, this is where he is most valuable.

carroll is the best FB we have at the moment so unfortunately you have to fit him in. Play Miller off the bench and see where we need him. Defence is the only position Miller will play too many good CHF

What the hell is with people saying Miller must be a forward? Our forward line is fine, the backline is where we need to develop some new players and playing in the backline is the only way Miller should get a game.

I'am of a firm belief that Miller MUST be a CHF not a CHB, he looks lost down back, he's got aggression, size, good pair of hands and a good lead. We've tried him down back with some success against Barry Hall but i think its gone too far...Bailey seems to be a big wrap for him and i think he sees him as the vital link in our forward line...put him at CHF and leave him there! stop moving him about, he is no utility, he is a CHF. T.Cloke has built his game on what Miller seems to have in spades, just lead up the ground, take the mark and kick it...lacking confidence but that'll come if we just bloody leave him there.

In case you havent figured, i reckon miller is extremely important for our club...tough, crashes packs, would be a good captain and i thought he would have been before his fall from grace, but he'll be back.

Bailey seems to like tough, eg Miller stays, TJ gone...look out brad green.

Rivers is a true CHB and i reckon perhaps our biggest casualty this year, we're a differents side with him in it, he brings people into the game and the likes of bell, whelen and perhaps yze feed of him. We had no structure this year, no point bombing down to neitz who is not as quick as he used to be and usually is part of a pack.

Miller jumped up and instead of smashing the ball over the goal line for a rushed behind he deftly taps the ball down to the waiting arms Jason Akermanis who had obviously called for the ball knowning Miller is a dumb ass footballer he tapped straight to him and aker kicked the goal.

Prime example of why he shouldnt play any where near the defensive 50.

Well we don't have a CHF or CHB and Millers just another in-between but worse. He does play more good games at CHF though.
