Does anyone know what the minimum wage is for casual workers in Australia? And even non casual. I've tried all the official sites but they are way over my head in legal terms and (confusion levels). I was under the impression that 15 an hour was the minimum for a casual employee 18 or over but some sites seem to disagree with me there. Does anyone here have a good grasp of this area of the law?

First page that comes up when google australian minumum wage.

http://www.fairwork.gov.au/pay/national-minimum-wage/pages/default.aspx

Yeah that's what I thought, but other results show exceptions etc. One page said 18yo minimum is 70% of that, 19yo is 80% and 20yo is 90%. And that was an official government page. There are so many exemptions and by-laws that I dunno how much faith to put in the 15.50 standard minimum. Would that minimum hold up in 90% of jobs or not? FWIW I know a lot of people over 18 who are on less than 15 an hour.

EDIT: Oops bottom of that page covers the 70% 80% 90% thing, so I suppose it does hold up based on that. Thanks.

DOUBLE EDIT: What classifies as a junior though?

1999 I worked at Hungry Jacks as a 15 year old...

$5.48 - no penalties.. I worked New Year's Day... $5.48

I worked Good Friday in 2000, I think I was up to $5.70 by that point, but no penalties for being a public holiday.

I quit by August 2000, and my last week of work I discovered I had cracked the coveted $6 an hour mark... $6.02.

I know I was young, and it was 13 years ago, but sheesh.... I could make more money selling railway grass to high school kids by telling them its marijuana!

Yeah thats pretty rough

I laugh at companies offering traineeships so they can pay the employee terrible wages and then get a government grant these people working 38 hours a week earning $320 - $380

Spotlight and KFC are two of the worst for wages

Any job that requires a full working week (38 hours) and you cant crack atleast $500 for the week is a joke

If you are working casually in the hospitality industry and are 18 or over your minimum wage is (give or take 10c an hour) $18 an hour (in WA).
I have literally just checked this with our pay lady.
If you have any quieries about your pay though champ, ring up the Fair Trade Commission.
DO NOT GET RIPPED OFF BY A CHEAP ARSE EMPLOYER..
It is you rite to get payed the correct wage. Not what he deems fair.

And if you do get dismiised by your employer for question this,go to the Unfair Dismissal Board ,they will deal with it in the correct manner.
Because who knows how many other kids he/she has ripped off.
I HATE PEOPLE WHO RIP OTHER PEOPLE OFF FOR THEIR OWN FINANCIAL GAIN.

I used to work for $13.75 an hour in an ugg boot showroom.

Now I'm up to $21.21 an hour. It isn't always bad to start off on a small wage as a youngster.

Was doing 20+ hours for many many months as a KFC employee earning less than $6 in my teens (early 2000's).

Having said that, $100+ at that age back then could actually go pretty far.

During a chat at the hairdressers last time a girl mentioned she is on $9/hr as an apprentice, and her apprenticeship lasts for 3 years.

Ridiculous - I struggle on more than 3x that.

I worked at farmer jacks at the end/start of 2007/08 getting $9 an hour as a 17 year old. Didn't really realize how ripped i was until after i quit when i got 1.5k in back-pay, the suckers :thumbsu:

I work at two places- one casual and one part time. I'm getting $14.45 for the casual one ($17 on the weekend) and $13 for the part time job. Although, I'm doing supervisor shifts once a week now so that brings it up to $22 an hour, not too bad considering I'm only 18.

When I started as an apprentice I was on 8.50 an hour.

There's now apprentices in my workshop on 22 an hour. Crazy.

Apprentices that live out of home and still afford nice clothes, go out every weekend and bang bishes. All thanks to our lovely deposit of ore and chinas thirst for buying it, then dumping it in the ocean.

How old were you?

i swear i was on less than that in about 2002 at Hungry Jacks......piss poor when Macca's offered a good 2-3$ per hour more, stupid of me not to move jobs.......

They worked me hard as though, good thing i ate some chicken nuggets haha

I was 15 and turned 16 before I quit

I remember working at Safeway in the early 2000s and being on about $15 an hour, plus double time on Sundays and double time and a half on public holidays. But that was with an actual union backing us up - seems that the union guaranteed all wages there, as I wasn't a member.

I started on $6.64/hr (P/T) in 2000 and finished on about $20/hr (casual) in 2006.

Quite satisfying to triple your wage for no real increase in usefulness.:D

Given a first year nurse with a degree qualification currently gets about $25/hr or so (undoubtedly less 5+ years ago) I reckon $20/hr is pretty good for the level of complexity of what I had to do. Open box. Place contents of box on shelf. Dispose of box. Repeat for 4 hours or so. Not difficult, could fit it in after uni, could listen to my iPod and if I was doing soft drinks/pet food/laundry powder etc. was pretty good exercise.
