A lot of people were skeptical about this trade over the off season but i think Morts has been fantastic so far this season. His defensive pressure in the forward line is fantastic and he has got the ability to kick some great goals. He is going to make it extra hard for Pettifer to get back into the team.

Keep up the good work Morts :thumbsu:

Mate not sure what game you were watching yesterday. He was serviceable at best. 10 posession, 2 goals and 0 tackles is hardly anything to start a thread over.

Morton is a natural attacking player; but there's plenty of evidence that he is prepared to work on his defensive game.
Pettifer is going to find it difficult to get his place back if Morton keeps up his present contribution rate. His goal assist which resulted in Simmo's goal was a gem.

^ Reading the stats in the paper doesnt count as watching the game.

I thought he played a great game, it doesnt matter how much possessions he got, its the quality of them.
He always looked dangerous. Great pick-up.

Its the work he put in off the ball;)

So he didn't get a heap if possession, thats not his job, his job is to do whatever it takes to keep the ball in the F50 until we can hopefully score. The 3 games he has played, he has done just that. Tackling is one way to do this, but is also the willingness to throw yourself at the bottom of a pack to try and get possession also achieves this. Morton does both as witnessed by his 5 tackles against the Pies and there have been a few occasions where he has been the bloke feeding the ball out so another player can score the goal.

Would much prefer Morton doing that and having 3 shots on goal per game as a result than Pettifer getting 15 odd touches, 8 marks and 1-2 goals yet applying JS in terms of pressure.

smart player with pace and skill. the difference with the previous HF we had is like night and day. ;)
lol, you can tell which one was at West Coast at the start of his career, and which one began at Richmond during the Frawley era

man, you can fire the ball towards his vicinity and in a one on one he will conjure up something, if not take the mark, turn and suss out the option in a flash.
Goal sneak, who also has accuracy.

do i go on with the comparisons to night and day? ;)

Mitch has the potention to be a really good footballer but i think he still does what he did at WC. He starts off the game with all guns blazing and kicks a few but then does hardly nothing for the rest of the game as he knows hes done enough to stay in the side for next week.
If he plays like he does always in the 1st quarters then the guy will be a gun.

I thought he was really good yesterday he works hard to make opportunities. With the new forward set up players like him are going to be crucial in giving us lots of forward options.

then don't open it...simple:) footy isn't all about kicks and handballs mate;)

Needs to work harder up the ground. Goes missing for quaters at a time.

These are my only two real critisims of the bloke, a solid start to his career at Richmond

Meanwhile, he was recruited as a potential midfield option. Do you think that he will ever make the midfield, or will he become a permanant small foward?

Morton had no tackles on the weekend and has had 6 tackles in his 3 games Petts had 7 tackles in his 3 games.

Sorry Morton is doing ok but needs to do a bit more to prove he belongs.

I agree MM is doing well considering he has yet to play 10 games, Pettifer will get his chance soon enough to see whether he has learnt anything....

It's not just tackles, it's chasing, harassing, knowing when to man up - It all creates forwardline pressure and results in turnovers and more opportunity to score.

Tackles aren't the only way to tell whether a player is applying pressure or not, you can apply pressure by diving into a pack to lock the ball in, you can apply pressure by chasing a bloke as hard as you can which forces a poor disposal, you can apply pressure by picking up a free opponent even if he isn't your direct opponent when the opposition has the ball. All of these things put pressure on the other team, not just how many tackles you lay. Tell me when you have seen Pettifer do these sorts of things on a regular basis. He seems quite happy to jog along side an opposition player to try and keep him corralled but rarely applies actual pressure.

I agree Morton looks okay and I also agree the Petts does not work hard enough when he doesn't have the pill.

In simple terms - I think Morton has been a litte overrated in this thread Petts has been a little underrated.

Petts has consistently kicked 30+goals and gathered 350+ possessions over the past 3 years. Hate him (and he annoys me) all you like but they are the facts.

In his 3 games for Richmond and the 10 odd he played for the Eagles - Morton has been a bit and pieces player - but he has looked good on occasion.

For Morton to replace Pettifer he needs to get more ball, kick more goals and be more involved in the play through the game.

For Petts to stay in our side he needs to add a defensive side to the game.

And may the best man win - but right now neither should think they are a walk up start in our team.

If we coould combine the 2 of them it would be just about perfect. :)
