Could have been anything? He's still the 10th leading wicket taker of all time in Australia, that's pretty damn good. Also one of our best ever ODI bowlers of all time.

He could well finish at number 4 and be regarded as one of our best ever.

I think his injury was a blessing as it allowed him time and space to reset. The resurgence is not totally unexpected. I know he probably wouldn't have been selected if Pattinson, Starc or even the Bird were fit, but you never know. He was almost unplayable in the last two one day series on wickets that did not suit him.

I'm already getting tingles down there at the thought of watching him bowl tomorrow.

England will be enjoying a lovely sleep tonight I'd imagine.

I know what I mean BACCS and stand by what I wrote. He had the talent to do anything.

Read what Punter wrote about him in his book. He could not understand how someone with Mitch's natural gifts had so little self-belief. It's that lack of self-belief that has stopped him from being an all-time great.

It's not unrealistic - the pitch is very true and MJs technique is rock solid.

Only problem is - we don't want him shattered prior to bowling.

Smith was clearly rooted last night. Could barely score after he scored his ton. Don't want that fatigue with Johnson prior to bowling

These are my thoughts too.

I'd be happy if Boof has told Johnson to go out and slog. If it pays off and he gets runs fast, then thats great and not taking too much out of him, but if it doesn't and he gets out early, plenty of time to rest up.

His bowling aside for a minute, I've always thought that his f-c average of 23 doesn't do his batting justice either.

That's what I meant. He could have been a proper all-rounder, he's got all the shots of a batsman. Can play off the front and back foot.

Solid technique too. Strikes it cleanly, plays the ball with a straight bat, and his back lift is one of the best I've seen.

I've gotta say, I pretty much gave up on him after years of subpar performances. I do remember being one of his biggest supporters on here for a long time because I recognised what he had the potential to do. Unfortunately, he only really showed it in fits and bursts outside of the 2008/09 season.

So I have to salute him for managing to come back so strong and delivering the sorts of performances I thought he no longer had in him.

His batting has improved too - maybe it's due to greater self-confidence, but he's also watching the ball better (I think Mark Taylor said something about his eyesight being sub-par, which may not have helped).

I think for a lot of people (myself included) it reached a stage of apathy - the belief in him dwindled and they just didn't really care if he succeeded or not, we have enough young quicks anyway. Good on him for rising above that.

I always knew he was going to do this :thumbsu:

Indeed. Your support for my support was invaluable ;)

Incredible comeback. Good for him. Always come across as likeable even if his performances were insanely erratic.

Was just having a look and his 2009 and 2010/11 Ashes series weren't as disastrous as I thought, although he was pretty much ineffectual. 20 @ 32.5, 16 @ 36 respectively. I always remember those series as if he averaged over 40, possibly even 50.

Player of the Series -ROFLMFAO - I can't remember when I've followed a more sastisfying series by a player.

Every plaudit imaginable needs to be thrown his way - god knows I've moaned about him enough. I hate seeing players fritter away massive talent.

Before the series started, I wrote on some thread that if he could just bowl 25% better on his average days (I knew he'd have at least one flyer match) he and Harris could win this for us.

How much did he improve though? About 60/70 percent?

Problem is that his ceiling is so high as we've just seen. Hecan't hit those sorts of heights very often but once you know a player can hit them, they have a vast capacity to disappoint you.;)

And there's a possibility he still hasn't hit that ceiling. Scary stuff. South Africa tour, India next summer, the World Cups (ODI and T20I) and return Ashes in less than two years will tell. Such an important time for him to come into form.

Most encouraging thing is that I reckon that he's finally got his bowling technique sorted. He's looked somehow like he's doing the same thing over and over every time I've seen him. None of this, where is his arm coming over stuff?

If he's finally got a properly repeatable action sorted, that is a massive plus for our attack.

Have never been his biggest fan, but he was ridiculously good this summer. He's always had his tricks, but he was incredibly reliable. Well done.

In 2009 he bowled absolute crud in the Lord's test, which is probably what most people remember from that series. He did bowl pretty well later in that series. In 2010/11 he won us the match in Perth but was bowling the crud before and after that.

Anyway, as others have said, it's a great sporting story this one. Couldn't be happier for him!
