Maybe not in terms of bounce, cut, etc, but the technique of bowling doesn't alter depending on the condition of the pitch. Whether it's a slow featherbed or a quick bouncing deck, you still bowl with the same action, and more importantly, the same line.

We simply cannot say his disgraceful line and length is because the English wickets don't suit him as much. He has been pathetic in the first two Tests and, like Haddin, really doesn't deserve a place in the team at present.

I'd be flying Bruce Reid over there to work with Johnson.

Ha. Hardly, he hasn't grassed a chance yet. He starts grassing chances, then you can start questioning if he should be there.

I think he needs to be dropped for the third test cause otherwise we will lose the ashes. he is just down on confidence and it is impacting him on the pitch. i think it is stemming from all the drama surrounding his girlfriend and his mum, i know it is kinda weak but things like that can affect a sportsmans ability.

So what precisely is the problem? How has a man who broke Graeme Smith's hands twice in three Tests become a bowler whose performances are best viewed through barely-splayed fingers? Is the slide reversible?

:(

It's painful to watch him the way he is at present, compared to the guy who tore the Saffers apart.

Three recurring themes have emerged from conversations with sources close to Johnson on both sides of the Australian camp. They are, in no particular order, a lowering of arm height, an attempt to bowl too quickly and a domestic situation in which Johnson's mother has publicly harangued his fiancée in the Australian tabloids.

The lowered arm height (and consequent dragging/falling in his delivery stride) is obvious - we've all picked up on it, Cooley/Punter/Mitch are all obviously aware of it as well, but are struggling to fix it.

Bowling too quickly I'm not sure about, but I have thought it might be an idea for him to slow down a little to try and regain his line/length and action, and then build pace up from there. Really, if we can bowl for an hour this morning, it'd be worth bowling Mitch non-stop, telling him to slow it down a bit, and try and get himself right.

As for his Mum - what a completely selfish bitch. To behave in the way she did, in the week before probably the biggest and most important event in her sons life, makes it pretty bloody obvious why he isn't close to his Mum. What a bitch.

The rhythm issue will take a while to sort and he's the type of person they believe needs to have his confidence up. I think both times he broke muppet's hand there was some assistance from the pitch in Sydney (cracks) and Durban (spicy). The flat tracks here aren't helping him generate much bounce.

Let's worry about bowling two balls at a decent length on off stump before we start worrying about whether the pitches are bouncy.

post loses all credibility with this ridiculous comment - haddin scored a hundred a week ago and hasn't dropped a chance.

on the topic at hand... obviously johnson will play in the tour match. this issue to me is clearly a technical issue - its his arm positioning and wrist positioning, which is related to, i think, trying to bowl to fast, trying to swing too much, and a loss of form.

given it's a technical issue, it's likely that he'll be able to fix it in the space of one bowling spell... or it could take months.

as such, i think he's the one that needs to be dropped if he can't correct it during the tour match. i really think the selectors are going to want to make at least one change to bring lee in... i think johnson deserves to be dropped before siddle at the moment.

Just on Haddin, his glovework has been mediocre at best, but, to be fair, the bowlers are making it extremely difficult for him - they're spraying balls all over the place.
If the bowlers bowled at the stumps then we wouldn't need a keeper.

Would give us an extra fielder :thumbsu:

The kneejerk reactions about Johnsons bowling are disturbing but predictable. Johnson will get this type of reaction for most of his career. He is Mr Unpredictable. That is the nature of his game. That is why he is dangerous and will continue to get plenty of wickets for Australia. That is why he wont be dropped and shouldnt be. That is why no batsman likes facing him.

I still blame video games for the state of disrepair that many supporters have fallen into.

Still he is only 1 wicket off the top of wicket takers table and has more upside than the rest put together.

This is a pretty dumb post.

Look at how many runs he's going for. It's not that unpredictable. Batsman know it will either be short and wide or full on leg stump. I don't care if he occasionally bowls a wicket taking delivery. He bowls so much rubbish that it puts us under so much pressure from the high run rate and totally stuffs up the guy bowling at the other end.

If Hilfenhaus had McGrath bowling at the other end he probably would have taken 15 wickets by now.

Youve convinced me. Based on this series he should never play Tests for Australia again. Unless of course he gets it right in tour or shield games, but if he does get it right in these games how can he assure everyone that this will continue in Tests. :thumbsu:

Johnson did not just have a bad game skipper, he had no clue as to where each ball was going. He was poor in the first test and was deplorable in the second, so much so he really didn't look like he wanted to bowl when thrown the ball. He almost looked embarrassed.

Given we are 1-0 down with three tests to go we don't have much margin for error. If MJ bowls with the same fundamental lack of control and complete lack of confidence in the tour match then he may have to be dropped, because if he bowls that poorly again at Edgbaston we'll most likely go 2-0 down.

FFS it is not a good sign when the opposition target your supposed number one strike bowler and actually lift in confidence when he comes into the attack.

Contrast it to England; we'd wait for Freddie to finish a spell, then attack their other bowlers.

England would use Johnson as a launching pad to attack all of our bowlers.

Likka. I have not denied that he bowled rubbish this test. My problem is that as soon as any player is down the kneejerkers cry for their scalp.

Cold hard facts are that he has bowled crap but is still magically ahead of all bar 2 bowlers on the wicket takers tally. Even ahead of Flintoff.

Here are some figures to look at.

Jonhson 2 82.4 10 331 8 3/87 5/131 41.37 4.00 62.0

Flintoff 2 74.0 11 247 7 5/92 6/119 35.28 3.33 63.4

Siddle 2 80.2 10 312 7 2/64 4/140 44.57 3.88 68.8

Anderson 2 74.0 15 251 6 4/55 4/141 41.83 3.39 74.0

Swann 2 67.0 11 222 4 4/87 4/91 55.50 3.31 100.5

Broad 2 66.0 10 256 4 2/78 3/127 64.00 3.87 99.0

Now stats lie, but they also hold some truth.

My point is that Johnson has more upside than any of these blokes and yet still has managed to hold his own. Johnson is a matchwinner and with such players people need to take the good with the bad. If the Australian team wants robots then Johnson isnt the answer. If they want blokes that can win a game in a session then he is the man.

Strauss would love nothing better than Australia dropping Johnson.

If there are issues such as fitness or personal stuff then by all means give him a rest, otherwise I hope they persevere with him.

Johnson is back bowling what he bowled when he first came onto the scene... pies. He has absolutely no control over what he's doing at the moment and he's bowling all over the shop. Most of you have it spot on regards to his technical issues. He's still very raw and while he's 27 he still ahs alot to learn. We need to iron out his technical issues ASAP so they don't become a habit. I think he just needs more experience and cricket so he has confidence in his action and has a consistent action.

i don't know, seems every Australian wicket keeper gets this criticism for the first three-five years of his tenure. Marsh was "iron gloves" Marsh for a long time. Many felt Healy didn't cut it either for years. Gilly took more catches than any keeper in the history of the game (many to a spinner who turned the ball ALOT), yet was shite (great batsman, overrated keeper, apparently). And now its Haddins turn. No offence intended, but i think bagging keepers is a bit of an Australian pastime.

MITCHELL Johnson says he was living in denial during the Ashes series and admits his public split with his mother undermined his tour of England.

Johnson has revealed the emotional toll caused by his mum Vikki Harber's claim that the fast bowler was "stolen" from her by his fiancee Jessica Bratich.

The left-arm quick battled an Ashes form slump - he struggled to hit the pitch during the second Test at Lord's - but at the time insisted personal problems were not to blame..............

--------------------

Personally i think his mother is a f'ing idiot for coming out the way she did but how piss weak is he if he let a disagreement over his stupid women involving his mother ruin his form!!!

Harden the F up!!!

Cost us the ashes. Pathetic. Plenty of people have way worse problems in their life and still manage to perform.

Mitch comes across a whinny little bitch. :thumbsd:

Amen to that. Soft as butter. Glenn McGrath played week after week with everything his wife was going through but never did his form drop off like Johnsons did.

I remember reading the article on cricinfo before the herald sun ran with it, didn't come across as if he was blaming his mum at all, more commenting on how his mental strength was his weakness in the Ashes and how he is improved now. The next day, the herald sun use the heading "Mum was to blame". They're not even subtle about the way they spin stories.
