How bad is he going?

They're talking about him being a lock at first big forward picked. I think that title goes to Pods

At the moment Mooney can't jump. He never gets up in the air for a mark, and persists with planting his feet every contest. This can be something that happens if you get a lot of ankle injuries. You get afraid of getting up in case you land awkardly and do it again

He always tries to catch the ball on his chest which looks pretty ugly and gives defenders a great chance to spoil

And he can't kick

I love the Moondog but we really need a big finals campaign from him. And in the 2 years we have won the flag I would like someone to point out a real standout game from him in the finals

Thoughts?

Not travelling very well at all. We are going to need him to step up now that Pods will get something from the mrp. Hawkins has looked decent at least.

If he was kicking those set shots he'd have his 2-3 a week and thats pretty much what he's expected to do. But he's not.
His confidence is clearly shot, looking to pass (like he did to Jimmy, further from goal) when he should be going back and nailing them. He's a liability coming into big games, but has to play.

Kicked a couple of bags of 5 in 07. His best final was probably 05 V Melbourne where he dominated at both ends and in the ruck.

But anyway, Pods is gone for at least the near future so we need Moons even if his form is poor.

9 Marks and 11 kicks, on the surface it doesnt look that bad. But like mwt, he's just a couple of straight kicks away from doing his bit.

problem is that looks like a long way away

He's not just missing narrowly. He's barely getting it inside the behind post at times

If not for Pods I would say drop him.

Milburn too. Got to be ruthless, sorry boys but neither should play on next season.

I disagree, you do realise Milburn was excellent tonight, and has had a solid year.

Always seems to use the ball so effectively in tight spots. Great footy brain.

Tough on Dasher, i thought he's been pretty good the last couple of weeks.

Moons is an enigma though, he nailed a 45m pass straight on to the chest of the Tommahawk in the goal square in the first quarter but can't kick a goal from 30 out directly in front.

Something is wrong when you have no faith in one of the main forwards at being able to kick a goal. He is a good mark and does his thing, but damn Mooney is incredibly frustrating. Has been like this for close to two years now; whatever is wrong isn't going to get better in a couple of weeks. And with Pods gone, we need him.

How a rookie like Pods can be a better set-shot then a triple premership player like Mooney is beyond me.

I think Moons is playing better at present as the link-up player up the ground, much as JPod often does.

Given JPod is going to miss a few, I'd like to see him continue in that role, while playing Ottens & Hawkins forward and rotating them through the ruck 2nd to Blake.

Spot on:thumbsu:. There's no problem with his presenting, marking or even his field kicking. The set shots are obviously a mental thing; they're driving me ****ing mental as well.

Moons will find his form next week. And carry it through the Finals. And you will see more second efforts from now on.

His kicking in front of goal is worse than ever.

Bring on Dr.Phil.
You're not wrong.
Nothing wrong with his team play but when he faces up to the sticks, it's as if he's staring into the jaws of death.
Cam, deep breath, relax, switch your head off and let your foot guide the ball between those posts.
We know you can do it.

Was ok, not great, dropped a few marks but took a few, so a mixed bag. Goalkicking is the big worry. Without Pods we won't beat the Saints in 2 weeks unless Moons can put them through the big sticks. Hopefully he can remedy it next week.

The fact he passed laterally to Bartel instead of taking that shot at goal shows his head is still stuffed and he has the demons from 08.

Just another opinion, but I think this thread is a bit of an over reaction.
His stats weren't too bad for a centre half forward in a team that specialises in multiple goal kickers.
No-one on the ground had more than his nine marks.
Although he didn't kick a goal (2 behinds only, with the aforementioned yips on his goal kicking) he was credited with three Goal Assists, also more than any player from either side.
Throw in a hit-out, a tackle, a free kick and five Inside 50's and some vigorous contesting and his game itself was not worthy of such harsh judgment.
Like many Cat fans, I feel sick in the pit of my not inconsiderable gut when I see him taking a set shot from inside 30m.
Tonight's shocker was laughable if it wasn't so serious - but his overall contribution to the game was considerably larger than quite a few others that took the ground - from both sides.

Mooney has never been a decent kick for goal over and extended period. He goes through patches of confidence and straight kicking . We need to hope he can get his head straight soon in time for the finals.

i didnt think mooney was too bad last night, without any stats in front of me i thought he was doing well during the game.

goalkicking is a concern but he has always been better from 40-50+ m.

encouraging signs, just needs to nail a couple to get confidence back. hopefully next week vs wce?

Can not mark when leading with an oponent. The ball is easily punched away from his grasp.
His kicking for goal is crap and appears o be getting worse.
They say he gives us structure?
Mooney has been great for the club but he needs a real crank from the coaching staff. The focus has been on the other key forwards this year and he has been under the radar.

Mooney is no longer the main man in our forward line as he has been replaced by Pods easily. Still loved by everybody as we know he does not lack effort
